Another reason to hate #Apple We're seeing more 2018+ MacBook Pro/Air donations — but Apple's T2 chip means even after iCloud sign-out and reset, the firmware stays locked to the original account.

Without donor contact, these machines are useless. :(

I've upcycled ~1,000 older Macs, but T2 era machines will end that. It's controlling, creates e-waste, and will only get worse. #righttorepair matters — Apple couldn't care less.

Hank Green giving some amazing considerate, calm almost meditative overview of and background about the photography of earth and moon by the Artemis II mission.

I wish this was the standard for content about this mission. Great to get down to what actually matters instead of the space race and USA rhetoric of it.

🇬🇧 A new comet is visible with the naked eye !
C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) is an Oort cloud comet which will reach perihelion (the closest distance) on the 19th, before going away forever.

This morning, I loaded my backpack and set up to capture it. I wanted to see it rise next to the Bietschhorn (3 934). The comet is currently in the Pegasus constellation, just below 51 Pegasi, the first star known to host an exoplanet.

If you have clear skies, you should definitely try to see it : It is bright, and will pass only once! It already shows a very long tail, more than 10° long.
The image was taken with a 120-300 lens, set at 180mm. It is an ethical composite: I first captured the foreground with the tracking off (5 x 15s) and then turned the tracking on when the comet reached the desired position (120 x 15s).

Ce matin, j'ai chargé mon sac à dos et je suis allé la capturer. Je voulais la voir se lever à côté du Bietschhorn (3 934 m). La comète se trouve actuellement dans la constellation de Pégase, juste en dessous de 51 Pegasi, autour de laquelle on a découvert la première exoplanète.

Si vous avez un ciel dégagé, ne ratez pas ça : elle est brillante, elle ne passera qu'une seule fois, et sa queue s'étend déjà sur plus de 10° dans le ciel !

J’ai utilisé un objectif 120-300 mm à 180 mm. L’image est un composite éthique : le premier plan capturé sans suivi (5 x 15 s), puis suivi activé une fois la comète en position (120 x 15 s).

good lord.

so i go to install some kind of disk formatting /checking utility on the raspberry pi- so i go to “add remove software” , do a search for “disk utility”

wait a bit

get a list of really cryptic package names, none of which seem to have the words “disk” or “utility” in their names or descriptions, let alone their relevance. I try a bunch of variations with no luck.

so i do a search on the web. it says i need gnome-disk-utility

so i dearch for “disk-utility” (notice the difference?)” in add/remove software and it correctly pops up as the only result.

There’s no add or install button. I guess that the correct procedure here is to check the checkbox next to it and click “apply”. a pop up explains that it’s installing now. That finishes. I go to look for it in the start menu. It’s nowhere to be found.

I try to type “gnome-disk-utility” in the terminal- nothing happens. there’s no such command.

I search through the launch menu again and find a “Main Menu Editor” utility. I … guess that will let me edit the start/launch menu?

i navigate to the accessories menu. I click “new item”. I am presented with a small form

Name: ____
Command: ___ [Browse]
Comment: _____
[ ] Launch in Terminal?
[Cancel] [ Ok ]

so i type Disk Utility for name
gnome-disk-utility for command
“format disks” for comment…

the Ok button is greyed out.

I click browse expecting a list of installed applications and .. it’s just an ordinary file browser that starts out on “Recent” by default. There Is Nothing resembling a disk utility in Recent.

i browse around pointlessly in the file browser having no idea where the applications are getting installed.

I hit cancel. I go back to the Add/Remove software application to verify that it installed. I browse around for clues in it’s description

I right click on it to see if there’s clues in the context menu:

Remove Package
Visit Project Website
Required Packages
Dependant Packages

since i have nothing left to lose i visit the website

i see a page titled

Apps/Disks
View, modify and configure disks and media
[scrolling down]
[scrolling back up]

tiny tiny grey text next to the title reads

“gnome-disks.pi”

i go back to the menu editor and try “gnome-disks” for a laugh

the Ok button enables

—- Okay who the fuck designed this?

if that thing can tell me whether I guessed right why can’t it give me a fucking menu?

Who thought any of this was good enough?

Something many bands, clubs & promoters understand wrong about the Fediverse:⁣
There is no algorithm!

So here are some tips which make your Fediverse life hopefully a little bit more successful.

If you post a concert 2 weeks before the event, people will only see it around the time you post it.
- On Mastodon and where you can quote: make your event post quotable and quote your own event regua
- use hashtags. Not only in the original post, but also in the quote post. Some people follow them, some hashtags are auto-reposted like #punk
- use pictures for a post. If you want that Pixelfed user see your post too, an image is needed.

- On Pixelfed and others where you can't quote: repost your event regularly. Maybe make more than one post with different images

- If you are playing with other bands, have a look if they are already in the Fediverse. If yes, link them in your post.
Search for it. Or the club you play.... A great starting point here is https://fedi.punk.guide - @FediPunkGuide

- is your account on the for you best instance? If you are a metal band, maybe think about switching to https://metalhead.club - I'm pretty sure @thomas will welcome you with open arms
If you are in a punk band, maybe think about joining https://punk.photos (Pixelfed) or https://punkstodon.de (Mastodon).
But there are a lot more punk instances. We list some of them on https://punx.social please have a look.
If your club is in Berlin, maybe https://berlin.social is a good place? And Cologne clubs will make find a lot of locals at https://social.cologne and so on. The easiest way to find it, is searching for it on https://fedidb.com
You can always switch instances and take all your followers with you.

Follow accounts like @FediTips to get great tips about the Fediverse. When you used FB, Twitter or Insta the first time, you also had to get used to it.
