I write for myself, and then sometimes other people read what I wrote.

Other pursuits include board games, history, forested trails, politics, and wishing I didn't care about politics.

Taking a step into the Substack community with unguarded expectation. A first post! But something I wrote a few years back. More to come.

Thanks to those who read my work.

Kingfisher.

Having heard the call of a kingfisher near a lake I was mooching around in Worcs some years ago, I went for a closer look.

The kingfisher was hunting the edge of the pool where I could see a large shoal of small fish, but there was nowhere suitable for perching to watch and dive from, so it was occasionally hovering over the water instead.

Wonderful to witness, and I captured quite a few images.

Just in case anybody has lost track of Trump’s white Christian nationalism, here is how his campaign video, played at his final Iowa rally before the caucuses, introduced him. Read Dana Millbank’s further reporting and commentary here (gift access) https://wapo.st/41VNuq1.
The last remnants of the Republican Party died in Iowa

Let there be no more excuses made that Republican voters haven’t been given an alternative. They had a choice — and they chose Trump.

Only Alt Text tonight. Imagine. Pitch black outside. Same in. Still without power. 23 hours after a wind sheer of 83 miles an hour hit our ridge. House shook. Whump. Deep low pops, whumps in the woods. A crash. Another. … In the morning, our woods a tangle of downed trees, some snapped at the base, others uprooted, and so many widow-makers leaning on each other. A branch from an old maple blew 20 feet from the tree, a foot from my car. Picture it.

Incredible footage of a Kingfisher dive captured in slow motion.

Kingfishers compensate for the reflection and refraction of water to pinpoint the depth and position of prey underwater.

Wisconsin’s #gerrymandering case has garnered national attention. But a little-explored aspect of the suit — the pervasive presence of “Swiss cheese” districts (see some examples below) — could have huge ramifications for the outcome.
