Kingfisher.

Having heard the call of a kingfisher near a lake I was mooching around in Worcs some years ago, I went for a closer look.

The kingfisher was hunting the edge of the pool where I could see a large shoal of small fish, but there was nowhere suitable for perching to watch and dive from, so it was occasionally hovering over the water instead.

Wonderful to witness, and I captured quite a few images.

Only Alt Text tonight. Imagine. Pitch black outside. Same in. Still without power. 23 hours after a wind sheer of 83 miles an hour hit our ridge. House shook. Whump. Deep low pops, whumps in the woods. A crash. Another. … In the morning, our woods a tangle of downed trees, some snapped at the base, others uprooted, and so many widow-makers leaning on each other. A branch from an old maple blew 20 feet from the tree, a foot from my car. Picture it.
