@johnhowesauthor A few years ago, decided to write exclusively about places, each with a kind of hope or, at least, expectation that they may very well exist somewhere. Places have become my main characters. These days, sometimes I'll be traveling and wonder what stories a place otherwise easily passed by may have to tell.

Kingfisher.

Having heard the call of a kingfisher near a lake I was mooching around in Worcs some years ago, I went for a closer look.

The kingfisher was hunting the edge of the pool where I could see a large shoal of small fish, but there was nowhere suitable for perching to watch and dive from, so it was occasionally hovering over the water instead.

Wonderful to witness, and I captured quite a few images.

Here in the States, I wake up while it's still dark. I make a cup of coffee and, before I sit down to my work, look ahead to the day that is to come, but has already arrived and been captured by @Glastomichelle. Often, her photos are of the sunrise several time zones ahead, and though I hold no expectation, those glimpses into the dawn that will soon be mine are welcomed with immense gladness.

Only Alt Text tonight. Imagine. Pitch black outside. Same in. Still without power. 23 hours after a wind sheer of 83 miles an hour hit our ridge. House shook. Whump. Deep low pops, whumps in the woods. A crash. Another. … In the morning, our woods a tangle of downed trees, some snapped at the base, others uprooted, and so many widow-makers leaning on each other. A branch from an old maple blew 20 feet from the tree, a foot from my car. Picture it.
