#software #linux #systemsengineering (stay reading the profile - might get more exciting!) #retro computing #FOSS. I would like a better online world.

I was interviewed by the BBC this morning for a podcast they are planning in relation to the "Pay or OK" system which is rapidly creating a 2 tier class system for fundamental rights - where those who can afford it are able to keep their #privacy by paying for online services and those who can't are forced into behavioural profiling at the expense of their fundamental right to Privacy.

The gap between the rich and poor is getting wider - our human rights are now for sale...

Hey retropal! I put the #AppleLisaClone #BBS back up for a short period. I'm testing the system with a better serial comm controller this time. Also got a chance to flex a domain I've had for a very long time which seemed appropriate πŸ˜‰

Cheers and have fun!

Putting software in containers is cruel and unnatural.

Programs should be allowed to roam and graze freely on computer systems. Forcibly isolating and constraining them will lead only undue suffering.

Use of technologies such as Docker in systems administration must be ended immediately, there is no ethical justification for inflicting trauma like this in an enlightened society.

In this "free range software manifesto" I will -

My ebooks and audiobooks (from Tor Books, Head of Zeus, McSweeneys, Beacon, Verso and others) are for sale all over the net, but I sell 'em too, and when you buy 'em from me, I earn twice as much and you get books with no DRM and no license "agreements."

I didn't realize that @timoreilly had taken a visiting faculty position at UCL. He's just published a paper with two colleagues at the University on "algorithmic attention rents."

Tim's made a career of spotting important technologies and understanding them deeply. He (and his colleagues!) do an excellent job of explaining attention rents in this paper.

Best of all: Clear policy recommendations for dealing wth them.

The Loss of Dark Skies Is So Painful, Astronomers Coined a New Term For It: 'Noctalgia' - Slashdot

Humanity is slowly losing access to the night sky, and astronomers have invented a new term to describe the pain associated with this loss: "noctalgia," meaning "sky grief." Space.com reports: Along with our propensity for polluting air and water and the massive amounts of carbon we're dumping into...

I got a very basic BBS up and running on my Mac LCIII. Not much there yet, but give it a try! It's running Subtext by @jcs . The address is m68k.club:6800. The website is also written with HTML 3.2, so it should render on retro hardware. #retrocomputing #mac #lciii #bbs
@fribbledom There are times I just have to get away from the WWW. You should check out https://sdf.org/?join. #SDF provides a lot of free resources that I find enjoyable, entertaining and ad-free. You can run down a #gopher hole, peruse #bbs among many other things. It’s digital detox for modern day #internet users πŸ˜‰.

I would prefer it if Elon Musk was destroying his site during the work week. This isn't the first time.

Tokodon is a Mastodon client for Linux that's been gaining fanfare. It's excellent for managing multiple accounts.

I had no idea Tokodon was made by the official KDE team.

It looks beautiful -- even if the UI is a tad text heavy.

Personally, I like text. It lets you know exactly what you're doing. Too much abstraction through icons does not make good usability.

KDE apps like Kdenlive get big upgrades for KDE Gear 23.04

KDE Gear is the name of the big bundle of software the KDE team create, and with the KDE Gear 23.04 release there's new apps and plenty of improvements to making the desktop experience better.
