Independent Swedish rail operator Snälltåget won Travel News's Sustainability Award. Without taxpayer subsidies, Snälltåget managed to offer long-distance cross-border trains to many destinations across Europe. Snälltåget contributed much to allowing passengers to travel in a sustainable way.

Will the taxpayer then be liable for subsidy for the long term or the new night train ends?

Independent rail operator RegioJet a.s. orders 13 additional Alstom TRAXX locomotives.

Some will be used by RegioJet on routes in Central and Eastern Europe, others will go to the operator's new locomotive leasing pool.

In #Switzerland, more and more voices call for the opening of passenger rail to #competition. The benefits of competition were proven again and again: cheaper fares, higher ridership, more frequencies, and better service.

#FlixTrain's EU Commission-backed cross-border pilot service between #Munich and #Zurich will demonstrate to the Swiss authorities and to #passengers in Switzerland such benefits of competition.

#Rail passengers in Switzerland deserve this.

In #Italy, there has been competition in #highspeed #rail for almost 11 years now between incumbent rail operator #Trenitalia and its independent counterpart #Italo.

Dr Andrea Giuricin's tweet shows that #passengers there are now fully enjoying the benefits of #competition: low fares, more options and better quality of service.

This could indeed be a good example for the United States (and many other countries) to follow.
