#Journalism profs: Let's coordinate about which platform to switch our class-related #socialMedia assignments to. I'm leaning toward #Mastodon because #Twitter having an oligarch owner who shakes the antfarm for attention isn't conducive to learning and that behavior shouldn't be rewarded. We're between semesters, so this feels like a good time for this discussion.

In which Santa's elves learn an important lesson about machine learning bias. šŸŽ…šŸ§µ

'Twas the weeks before Christmas
And Santa was busy
His list was so long
It was making him dizzy

There are too many children
List checking can’t scale
If I do this by hand
I will certainly fail!

But one of his elves
Had a brilliant idea
What if we automate
Christmas this year!

A long but excellent piece by ⁦‪@nytimes‬⁩. Every horrendous detail of Russia’s illegal and botched attack into Ukraine. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/12/16/world/europe/russia-putin-war-failures-ukraine.html
How Putin’s War in Ukraine Became a Catastrophe for Russia

Secret battle plans, intercepted communications and Russian soldiers explain how a ā€œwalk in the parkā€ became a catastrophe for Russia.

Hello Mastodonians! For an #introduction:
I'm a husband, father of 2, grandfather of 5. Served 38 years in the Army, all over the world. Now thriving in a 2d chapter of life studying & teaching leadership (mostly in healthcare which was my research focus for a Doctor of Business Administration in 2019), "analyzing" national security on CNN (recently a lot on Ukraine due to my time spent in Europe), and engaging in several non-profits. I believe we should keep working on a more perfect union.
ā€˜Wiped out’: War in Ukraine has decimated a once feared Russian brigade

The bloody fate of Russia's 200th Motor Rifle Brigade in Ukraine is emblematic of Vladimir Putin’s derailed invasion plans.

The German word "schenken" means "to give a gift".

Sounds nice? Well, it has its pitfalls.

The sentence "Dieses Jahr schenken wir uns nichts" can mean
- "This year, we don't give each other gifts"

But it can also mean
- "This year, we won't have mercy on each other"

Also, "Das kann man sich schenken" means "It's not worth while - don't do it / go there / buy it."

So, all in all, "schenken" is basically Christmas in a nutshell. šŸŽ„

Enjoy our language!

CNN, WaPo, NYT journalists' accounts were restored. The Intercept and independent journalists were not. We've gotten the worst of it all: the criticism of being the ā€œmainstream mediaā€ but without the backing or protection of being the ā€œmainstream media.ā€
This is very good, on Russia's military failures. But it also doesn't suggest they will stop fighting anytime soon
