NSW is moving from Varroa eradication to Varroa management. This is a turning point in the country's beekeeping history.

Varroa destructor management is complex, with no easy solutions yet.

Australia abandons effort to eradicate varroa mite after 14,000 bee hives destroyed

Despite a $100m effort over 14 months to stop the invasive parasite, scientists say eradication is no longer possible

Our paper published yesterday in Biology Letters discusses what research should be prioritized should Varroa spread throughout Australia, the last large country still free of the mite.

Australia has had a recent incursion of Varroa mites, perhaps still under control. Here is an overview of the situation and what could happen if the mite spreads throughout the country:

Australia is in a unique position to eliminate the bee-killing Varroa mite. Here's what happens if we don't

Australia is the last continent to be invaded by the dangerous honey bee parasite, and has an opportunity to be the first to eradicate it.

We are looking for post-doc candidates who would like to work on #beekeeping practices and conduct a cost-benefits analysis for the use of hive sensors in Australia. This is a short full-time post-doc position for 6 months at Macquarie University in Sydney. The successful candidate would join a very dynamic team of bee researchers.

For more info and the full project description please email me at [email protected]

Modelling daily weight variation in honey bee hives

Author summary Honey bees are under threat and dying at an alarming rate due to pesticides, parasites, and other stressors. Obtaining information about the health of bee colonies is essential to understand how this happens and to identify measures that can prevent this from happening. Herein, we built a mathematical model of the daily dynamics of hives that allows such information to be extracted without detailed and expensive measurements. Based only on measurements of how the weight of the hive changes during the day, our model can be used to estimate how many bees are collecting food, how successful they are, and how much time they spend outside the hive. Due to its simplicity, the model presented here can be applied to a wide range of hive scale systems and help beekeepers track how healthy and productive their bees are.
