An article from Federal News Network demonstrating how sadly difficult it still is for the US government to make their technology accessible to all users:

Agencies still struggling to meet digital accessibility standards

GSA has said that limited staffing and resources are key drivers of agencies’ ongoing challenges with digital accessibility and Section 508 conformance.

A good reminder why the blindness community needs to fight for excellent smartphone accessibility and uptake. A great opinion piece in tpday's Washington Post about how "Access to services, benefits and discounts is migrating to mobile apps — and leaving the needy behind."

Can’t afford a smartphone? That’s going to cost you.

Access to services, benefits and discounts is migrating to mobile apps — and leaving the needy behind.

Good article in the Washington Post (likely behind their paywall) about the blind birdwatching community. It does a nice job of showing that blind people enjoy nature and can be in the outdoors, white canes and all! Title: "Blind birders in tune with bird sounds, call themselves ‘bird brains’ For those of you who have access, here is the link:

Blind birders in tune with bird sounds, call themselves ‘bird brains’

“The world is designed for sighted people, but nature is a place where it’s okay to be blind,” said Donna Posont, founder of Birding by Ear and Beyond.

To my last boost. Please boost this for wide spread. This is an opportunity for #braille dice sets to enter the realm of #mainstream and mass manufacturing. I haven't been able to read of full set of #dice as a #TTRPG player in 20 years since I went #blind. It would be beautiful for something like this to be added to life and make me feel like I'm right up there with everyone else. Thank you!

Just going to add the link directly here as well.

2/2 .. also patients are less embarrassed to be examined by blind technicians! What a win-win, providing great employment opportunities for the blind! Link: https://www.npr.org/sections/goats-and-soda/2024/09/08/g-s1-15690/breast-cancer-tumors-women-blind

1/2 Fascinating article on NPR today about training blind women in India to be Medical Touch Examiners. Where there is a lack of machines to perform mammograms and/or a sense of embarrassment about having sighted medical personnel perform a manual breast exam, a program is finding that blind technicians can use their hightened sense of touch to better detect possible tumors! #blind #blindness #npr #india #disability #jobs #creativity #BreastCancerPrevention #cancer

Great CNN article about disabled travel.

I'm curious to hear everyone's favorite books featuring blind characters, and also if they feel the portrayals of blindness are accurate or not. I've been reading the "Things Series" (trilogy) by Andrew Clements, and his character Alicia is a fantastic blind protaginist.

UCLA's office to help its disabled students appears to be in shambles! Congrats to the student newspaper there for doing some great investigative journalism. "Out of the nine total disability specialist positions the Center for Accessible Education typically maintains, only three were filled at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year."
Please read the story and boost it so UCLA will feel the pressure to do better!
