Family of Henrietta Lacks settles lawsuit against Thermo Fisher Scientific

The family of Henrietta Lacks is settling a lawsuit against a biotechnology company it accuses of improperly profiting from her cells. Their federal lawsuit in Baltimore claimed Thermo Fisher Scientific has made billions from tissue taken without the Black woman’s consent from her cervical cancer tumor. They were the first human cells to continuously grow and reproduce in lab dishes. They became a cornerstone of modern medicine. The settlement came after closed-door negotiations all day Monday. Attorney Ben Crump represents the Lacks family. He said the terms of the agreement are confidential.

I did not have “CDC warning of leprosy cases rising in Central Florida” on my 2023 Bingo card. But in retrospect, I should have considered it.

"Getting rid of physical books because we now have databases is like getting rid of sunshine because of the existence of vitamin-D pills and cod liver oil." --love that.

a plea for keeping physical libraries available. (but it is key to remember that all living library collections include materials that come and also go)

Death of the physical library

One of the unsung disasters of contemporary academic life is the death of the physical library. There are so many disasters in current year academia, I doubt as anyone else grouses much about this,…

Perspective: The 1980 eruption of #MountStHelens #otd vented approximately 10 million tons of #CO2 into the atmosphere in only 9 hours. However, it currently takes humanity only 2.5 hours to put out the same amount.

My new #wheelchair was delivered this week and I’m absolutely *over the moon*

To have something that was custom measured and designed for my body makes a huge difference… this has been nearly a year in the making! ♿️

1) easier to push, so less fatigue and more mobility
2) feels like an extension of my body.
3) builds confidence in my wheelchair skills.

This #ThrowbackThursday is dedicated to the bluebells. Below are some of my favourite images from previous bluebell seasons.

We're blessed to have some amazing bluebell woods in Hertfordshire, including some of the best in the whole of England.

Speaking of rare sightings...the big Mermaid Festival is happening this weekend in Seward so the Mountain Men of Alaska offered up their version of a mermaid. 💗

In his younger years, Biden (and other establishment Democrats) blew dog whistles about school busing in order to appeal to racist voters.

I vote for Democrats because they are less racist than Republicans, but it would be nice to have non-evil candidates on the slate.

May 17, 1954 was the day when the United States Supreme Court declared the doctrine of “separate but equal” unconstitutional. Even though the decision was eventually unanimous among all nine justices, it came only after a long and hard-fought campaign to persuade them to overturn what their predecessors had endorsed in the infamous Plessy v. Ferguson case of 1896.

Colleges are grappling with the latest pay-to-play maneuver that gives the rich an edge: published research papers. A new industry is extracting fees from well-heeled families to enable their teenage children to conduct and publish research that colleges may regard as a credential.

The Newest College Admissions Ploy: Paying to Make Your Teen a “Peer-Reviewed” Author

A group of services, often connected to pricey college counselors, has arisen to help high schoolers carry out and publish research as a credential for their college applications. The research papers — and the publications — can be dubious.
