#ThrowbackThursday for #Genealogy - a redditor put together a catalog of sorts for 83,000 #FamilyBibles linking to a variety of sources, from #FamilySearch to @internetarchive down to local genealogy societies.

My genealogy time is few and far between these days. The pension files I ordered came and had some nice to know items but not what I was hoping /thinking would be in there. Keep digging.
One of the more interesting new (to me, at least) companies in the #RootsTech2024 virtual expo hall is EphemeraSearch (https://www.ephemerasearch.com/?rt) which looks to index the handwriting on postcards sourced from eBay and multiple other postcard marketplaces. What a fantastic way to potentially stumble upon a physical artifact from an ancestor.
Search the everyday past

EphemeraSearch is a project dedicated to digitizing and transcribing old postcards, telegrams, letters and other correspondence for genealogy research. Genealogists can find old mail sent to their ancestors' address in census records.

I really enjoyed Devon Noel Lee's #RootsTech talk "From Research to Draft: Rapidly Writing Your Ancestor's Story." I've already done a lot of this work with my own ancestors, but I really like her document-by-document approach and may give it a shot for some short chapters I need to revisit.

The FamilySearch full-text search is pretty amazing, too. It's only a few limited datasets, but within a few minutes I was able to find loads of land deeds related to my fourth great grandfather. I'd say the handwriting was about 75-80% accurate, which is pretty amazing. And finding that record allowed me to add some previously unknown spouses for his children and even a set of grandchildren.

You can try it now by going to the FamilySearch Labs and turning it on. https://www.familysearch.org/en/labs/

A gentle reminder to everyone who uses hashtags. If you capitalize them #LikeThisOne people using screen readers will hear the words individually. Not capitalizing means it's read as a string of gobbledygook and so excludes visually impaired people. You're welcome.

#Genchat is coming, and I am determined to make this one.

hey, can you guys boost to help me find people with hypopituitarism and/or adrenal insufficiency, or people with careers related to these topics?

My 3 year old has a very rare condition called Pituitary Stalk Interruption Syndrome, which means most of his #pituitary gland is missing, and so he has central growth hormone, cortisol, and thyroid deficits. Last week he had an episode of severe #hypoglycemia that could have killed him, as a consequence of catching the flu. He's fine now, but I'm more than a bit shaken up. I'd love to be able to talk to, commiserate, and learn from people with similar conditions and/or expertise.

Reddit signed a deal with Google to use its data to train LLMs. To celebrate, we made a firefox extension that lets you replace all your comments with any text of your choosing. All we ask is that you not choose something copyrighted. The New York Times is currently suing OpenAI for training ChatGPT on its copyrighted material, and we wouldn't want Reddit's uniquely valuable data to become hopelessly intermingled with that of litigious copyright-holders.

I'm giving a Zoom talk on Sat. Mar. 9, at 3:15 GMT, to debut my brand-new research method for Welsh&English #Genealogy. It should be interesting even if you don't have Welsh&English ancestors since it's a good lesson on how to take cultural practices & turn them into methods to break down your brick walls.
