🌍🌎🌏 👋 “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.” – Chief Seattle, Duwamish

One of my favourite memories from the last Iceland trip is from the night we drove back from the puffin rock to our accommodation. As we reached the height of the mountain, suddenly we found ourselves driving above the clouds. It was magical. Iceland is magical.

7 July 1923 | Belgian Jewish woman, Rachel Romacki, was born in Etterbeek.

She was deported to Auschwitz from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen on 31 July 1943. She did not survive.

First monarch of the summer

I've been raising the caterpillars we find in our yard, using only milkweed grown in a tiny spot, for several years now. Last year I released 18, this year I'm already ahead of that number. We also have swallowtails after the gardener added golden alexander

🇩🇪 Hey queer folx in Germany! 🇩🇪

I have a queer friend who's fleeing the US to your lovely country. She's hella cool, but she doesn't know anyone there yet 👉👈

I told her I'd pass on the Discord info (sadly, she's not on Mastodon) of any of my community here if they wanted an introduction 💞

Did I mention she's awesome?

Edit: she's moving to Munich, öbersendling.

Lasagna for dinner, and wife decided she didn't want carbs, so she's eaten everything except the pasta.

It lies there, bereft of life, like it's been drained by some bolognese vampire.

Despite measles being declared eliminated in the US in 2000, annual measles cases have reached a 33-year high — and it's only July.

This is the tragic result of the spread of anti-vax disinformation, and will only get worse in the coming years because anti-vaxxers now lead our health agencies.

If you have an Intel Raptor Lake system and you're in the northern hemisphere, chances are that your machine is crashing more often because of the summer heat. I know because I can literally see which EU countries have been affected by heat waves by looking at the locales of Firefox crash reports coming from Raptor Lake systems.
You would think that ICE showing up in combat armor with a truck mounted machine gun to "arrest" (kidnap) little old ladies and child cancer patients would finally drill it into Americans' heads that immigrants are not dangerous and the only heavily militarized, ultra-violent gang in this country are cops.
🌞 Mainiu's automatic car awnings are becoming popular in China to avoid cars becoming boiling hot when parked outside during the summer.

This is like if Nazi's sold Auschwitz merchandise to their base in 1941.

It's beyond sick. The clinical term is sadistic psychopathy.

@MeanwhileinCanada
I've lived in Flor-e-duh for 51 years now and thought that the right could not get any worse but day by day, they improve upon themselves, which enhances their (your term) sadistic psychopathy. Thanks for the definition and for being Canada!

@MeanwhileinCanada

'Dachau Merchandise' would be more accurate.

Dachau was put into service weeks after Hitler seized power and was not an extermination camp like Auschwitz.

And yes, Hitler bragged about Dachau and used it for propaganda.

And yes, it was one of the predecessors of the extermination camps like Auschwitz.

@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada Thank you for bringing a little bit of precision in all these Auschwitz comparisons. Details matter, as these are not details. Whoever thinks what's currently happening is to be taken seriously shall not mistake comparisons for understanding.

@ratel @MeanwhileinCanada

The Auschwitz comparison still has value.

From the point Hitler had seized power and opened up concentration camps, there was no democratic alternative anymore to the way that led to Auschwitz and to the second world war.

@publixpace @ratel @MeanwhileinCanada

"Alligator Dachau" doesn't have the same ring to it.

@burnoutqueen @publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada If reality is not enough and if one constantly feels the need to compare it with something else to make their point then maybe it's an indication that we're getting it wrong.

@ratel @publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada

Historical comparisons are not automatically incorrect wtf

@burnoutqueen @publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada I didn't say that. What I'm saying is, just like photos, they don't speak for themselves. And to be relevant, a comparison has to be a little more specific than "A was very bad, B is very bad too, so B is like A".

@publixpace
This is the first I've heard of Dachau and just skimming the Wikipedia page is absolutely frightening at how similar it is to this facility the GOP has set up... Combine that with Congress not being allowed access and it's not hard to see how close we are to repeating history in a frightening way.

@MeanwhileinCanada

Dachau concentration camp - Wikipedia

@bobkmertz @MeanwhileinCanada

Yes, the MAGAtts probably read wikipedia, too.

@publixpace @bobkmertz @MeanwhileinCanada

Despite the fact they loathe Wikipedia and want it shut down.

@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada Once the tuberculosis starts spreading in the cramped quarters, it'll all be the same.
@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada
If I remember correctly there had been a porcelain manufacturer in Dachau, run by the SS, workers came from the concentration camp. Porcelain of this provenance is still searched after by collectors with a brown smear in their brain.

@wvs @publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada

> workers came from the concentration camp

Just pointing out, that rented out forced labor is still very much a thing in the US. Ironically outside of the deportation camps.

Has been for all of the last decades. Google "prison industry".

@wvs @publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada there were many things manufactured in concentration camps, and there are still people who collect them.

It is truly disturbing.

@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada It held the likes of me and you, anyone who opposed Hitler. That was in 1933, 6 years before the war and fuck all happened. Just like now... Everyone needs to read and learn history. I learnt it from my relatives who faught in the war. Who is teaching the young today? I am always astonished by the lack of knowledge about the past, we are doomed to repeat apparently.

@SamanthaJaneSmith @MeanwhileinCanada

Yes, literally weeks after he seized power.

Just wait until criticism of the king is officially labeled a mental illness - and you just can't let mentally ill people roam the country freely...

@publixpace @SamanthaJaneSmith @MeanwhileinCanada

This is what I'm afraid of.

Next protest, or the next, or the one after that...

We all get rounded up and "detained."

@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada
While the exact comparison of precisely which Nazi German concentration camp the US concentration camp is most like may be of academic interest, the most important point is that the US is building a concentration camp directly comparable with Nazi German concentration camps.

Also bear in mind Auschwitz was providing slave labour at least a year before it started industrialised murder by gas chambers. Such slave labour is already being proposed for the US camp.

@HighlandLawyer Thank you for pointing out this very important step in the historical progression.

@publixpace @MeanwhileinCanada

@MeanwhileinCanada

I'm looking at this thinking "this has to be a sick joke, someone faked the ad"...but then I stopped and thought about the US news and it het me...it has to be true.

@SnowyCA

No, it's real:

https://www.fastcompany.com/91362081/alligator-alcatraz-merch-shirts-hats-amazon-florida-gop-detention-center

Oh, and, guess what, you can buy this sadistic garbage on #Amazon as well. Why am I not surprised?

@MeanwhileinCanada

'Alligator Alcatraz' merch appears on Amazon and Florida GOP website, making light of controversial facility

Shirts, hats, and other merchandise celebrate a controversial Florida-based migrant detention center that has raised human rights concerns.

Fast Company

@CppGuy

I am not shocked, but this makes me feel ill to think people in this world are this cruel.

@MeanwhileinCanada

@SnowyCA @MeanwhileinCanada
Snowy, I thought it could be fake too. It's just so stupidly incredible. So I checked and the website and store exist indeed!
What can I say ... they are ready to do anything for money, sell anything, or betray friends (allies).

@hadon

IT turns my stomach to think someone is profiting from misery. @MeanwhileinCanada

@hadon @SnowyCA @MeanwhileinCanada whatever you do, don't go to the GOP FL website that sells this stuff, don't load up your shopping cart with several items,, then go to checkout and don't enter your name or other info such as payment. It messes up the inventory count for a while and that would cause problems, however temporary, for the vendor. You should not do this. Nor should your friends, family, like-minded folks.

@patrascan

I am sure no one would do this. ;)
@hadon @MeanwhileinCanada

@SnowyCA @hadon @MeanwhileinCanada heaven forbid! And surely no clever tech person (s) would set a plague of bots upon the website.
@SnowyCA @MeanwhileinCanada it is: Google it. There are even more illustrations...

@EvelineSulman

No thanks, I believe you.

I have no desire to increase my sorrow about the state of the human race.

@MeanwhileinCanada

@MeanwhileinCanada The so-called "party" should be banned as a terrorist organization
@MeanwhileinCanada grifter lesson 101 : always target the dumbest ones. Remind me of that black dude who made a killing selling trump merch outside his events. Dude was super happy to make money and empty the pockets of peoples who despise him. Of course all of that is morally questionable.
@MeanwhileinCanada these are evil people, these are the ones who enable genocide

@MatthewChat @MeanwhileinCanada I was gonna say, like, aside from the books and lamps made from Nazi victims? Nazis have always been grifters.

Where did they learn it in the first place? "Gator bait" was a huge *extremely racist* meme in the US (especially the South)... It's probably more than just an interesting coincidence that this specific racist institution also happens to reference that meme.

Atrocities and merch go hand-in-hand when cruelty is the point.

@Hex @MatthewChat @MeanwhileinCanada

US racists and eugenecists taught the Nazis how to Nazi in the first place. Read up on Henry Ford's connection to Hitler sometime. It's just one vicious cycle of hatred that goes round and round.

@MeanwhileinCanada @MatthewChat I can only look forward to a day, maybe 50 years from now, when merch from the Trump administration is displayed in a museum to everyone’s horror.

@MatthewChat @MeanwhileinCanada

Wow, if you updated that to latinos out, you could sell millions of copies to maga.

@MeanwhileinCanada
No different than the other nazi regalia the yankee nazis already wear.
@MeanwhileinCanada @chad this makes me realise: someone had to print up those yellow stars, too.
@MeanwhileinCanada I’d like a response tshirt saying PROJECT NÜRNBERG
@MeanwhileinCanada
Let them buy that stuff.
It will make harder for them to pretend they "did not know nor take part in" this shit, when it's over.
@MeanwhileinCanada well. It’s good when the nazis self-identify. Ya know who to punch.

@MeanwhileinCanada Could I make "Alligator Auschwitz" merch to drive home the point? Is that going too far?

Edit: more a question for Jewish people about usurping a painful part of their history.

Kierkegaanks regretfully (@Kierkegaanks@beige.party)

@dan613 @MeanwhileinCanada That might force the MAGA crowd to ask “why Auschwitz?” - “Because Alcatraz implies due process”.
@CAWguy @MeanwhileinCanada I also wanted alliteration. Someone else pointed out that Dachau, being in Germany, not Poland, is more accurate. But Auschwitz is also more familiar.

@dan613 Auschwitz was located in Germany proper at the time, today’s border between Germany and Poland was drawn after WW2 by the USSR.

@CAWguy @MeanwhileinCanada

@skittles @dan613 @CAWguy @MeanwhileinCanada If you can call 'annexed in 1939' part of Germany Proper. Do you call the areas occupied by the Russians in Ukraine currently 'Russia proper'?
