Following on from yesterday, here's a Silver-studded Blue caterpillar with its posse of Lasius niger ants in attendance. These ants continually escort the caterpillar everywhere it goes, protecting it from predators and milking the honeydew that it produces.

This #planthopper’s thorn-like appearance is an effective camouflage generally but has the wrong kind of spike for this plant. An appropriate metaphor for those feeling a little out of place today.
If you're a species isolated underground for millions of years, can you still respond to extreme temperatures like above-ground relatives? Our new paper in #ScientificReports uses Aussie aquifer-bound beetles to examine heat stress at the #transcriptome level: http://rdcu.be/cWvDz 🪲🔥

Nirmatrelvir and the Risk of Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19

"...associated with reduced risk of PASC regardless of vaccination status and history of prior infection. The totality of findings suggests that treatment with nirmatrelvir during the acute phase of COVID-19 reduces the risk of post-acute adverse health outcomes."

We rely on tryptase levels to indicate mast cells are involved in a reaction but they don’t necessarily mean allergy. Elevated levels can be found in spontaneous urticaria (even when the reaction is blocked by antihistamines) although levels aren’t usually as high as in anaphylaxis. Other mast cell disorders (eg mastocytosis) can have elevated tryptase levels, although this wouldn’t be a typical presentation. I suspect this case is spontaneous urticaria unrelated to venom #medmastodon #mediverse

Whoa! I know bats are important, but this is insane. An exclusion experiment by Beilke et al shows that forests without bats are *three to five times* as insect-eaten as forests with bats.

I moved to #NewOrleans for the insects. I learned to love the music, food, architecture and culture over time. But I must admit the year-round availability of interesting insects still gives me a lot of joy. Here is a Platydracus tomentosus Rove #Beetle that was cruising around outside of the hospital. #macrophotography
