Machaon (Papilio machaon) - swallowtail - der Schwalbenschwanz.
Une belle surprise au jardin : Nos fenouils se sont transformés en pouponnières pour ce magnifique papillon, le Machaon. Les deux chenilles sur la photos sont à différents stades. J'en ai compté 8 en tout. Certaines sont encore minuscules. Il me tarde voir les chrysalides.

An interesting little tussock. Found a little caterpillar which ate like crazy and pupated and then popped out as an adult so quickly. What moths in the US take all summer to do they seem to do in 2 weeks here.

Sharing my solution to squash vine borers (Eichlinia cucurbitae), the larvae of which burrow into the roots and eventually kill the plant: inject Thuricide Bt into stem wherever you see frass accumulating. This is easier to do if you train your plant vertically so that lower parts are visible. The moth *Scythris* species "stripe" was previously classified as nationally critical. This was changed to national endangered by the 2025 Lepidoptera threat assessment panel, based on observations of the moth made on #iNaturalist by me (I photographed one in 2022) and Mel Whiting (who photographed one in 2025) at two separate locations in the Christchurch Port Hills.

The hope is that this moth is as much elusive as it is rare and range restricted, and as we learn more about it we might find that the population is doing OK in the places where it lives.

Insect conservation is tricky in NZ when a lot of our inscts are in trouble but at the same time we know so very little about so many of them.
