Dry Ice on Mars
by Melody

On Mars the seasonal polar caps are composed of dry ice (carbon dioxide). In the springtime as the sun shines on the ice, it turns from solid to gas and causes erosion of the surface. Dry ice goes directly from solid to vapor, unlike water ice which melts into liquid when it gets warm.

On Mars the seasonal polar caps are composed of dry ice (carbon dioxide). In the springtime as the sun shines on the ice, it turns from solid to gas and causes erosion of the surface. I enjoy the incredible diversity of forms that the erosion takes, and am studying the factors that give us "spiders", "caterpillars", or "starbursts", all colloquial words for what we rigorously name "araneiform" terrain.

This particular example shows eroded channels filled with bright ice, in contrast to the muted red of the underlying ground. In the summer the ice will disappear into the atmosphere, and we will see just the channels of ghostly spiders carved in the surface. This is truly Martian terrain - this type of erosion does not take place anywhere naturally on earth because our climate is too warm.

Thinking about the time when I made friends with my hair stylist and she invited me to a party she and her boyfriend were having and another couple asked how I knew them and I said "I met them at another swingers party, similar to this one."

I have this apple tree in my backyard and every once in a while, when I get stoned (which is very often), I go eat an apple. And they always suck lol. They are both tasteless and sour at the same time.
But like that’s what real apples are like.
It’s kind of cool because they are super real. I mean like I pick them right off the tree

But I gotta get them before the deer do lol

Slime mould! I think this one is Craterium leucocephalum. Slime moulds aren't plants, or animals, or fungi - they split off at some point after plants, but before fungi and animals.

I hope to get better at photographing these - this one was super-tiny, with each "stalk" around 1mm high. I stacked 24 exposures to get this end result.

“The last significant data for the first half of 2025, personal income and spending for May, was released this morning. It was the first month that reflected the impact of Tariff-palooza!, and boy howdy was it impacted. Not a single metric was positive. One metric was unchanged; everything else was negative. Let’s take a look at the carnage.“

I really hate grocery store check outs asking me if I want to donate $20 to end child hunger or whatever. You're a $10 billion corporation. I'm using a coupon to get 50 cents off a bag of potatoes. Why don't YOU donate $20 to end child hunger?

Meta will offer you free shoes, then grind up your feet and sell them to you as sausages

Facebook is starting to feed its AI with private, unpublished photos

Facebook users opting to upload their photos for “cloud processing” are inadvertently giving Meta AI access to their entire camera roll, including photos that have not been uploaded to Facebook’s servers.
