The new (4th) edition of "Wetzel's #Limnology: #Lake & #River #Ecosystems" is now published! It was an honor to contribute to this multi-year project & work with Tonya DelSontro on the "Organic #Carbon Cycling & Ecosystem #Metabolism" chapter (there was A LOT to try to fit into the updated text thanks to so much great work on this topic since 2001!).

Rather than perpetuate the old "land and sea" categorization that has traditionally ignored lakes, rivers and wetlands, the #COP15 framework explicitly recognizes that the #biodiversity and ecosystem functions of inland waters must be conserved. This is a welcome change for global conservation policy, given that #freshwater ecosystems are disproportionately diverse and threatened compared to terrestrial and marine systems. https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/e6d3/cd1d/daf663719a03902a9b116c34/cop-15-l-25-en.pdf

Glass frogs are pretty much transparent. But they can't make their blood transparent, so when they sleep they store 90% of their blood in their livers which increases their transparency. Basically, they have their own natural invisibility cloak. 🤯

How Glass Frogs Weave the World’s Best Invisibility Cloak

The amphibians pull off a death-defying magic trick to stay hidden while they sleep.

The R Inferno - Burns Statistics

What is it? Abstract: If you are using R and you think you’re in hell, this is a map for you. A book about trouble spots, oddities, traps, glitches in R.  Many of the same problems are in S+. Why would I care? Even if it doesn’t help you with your problem, it might amuse […]

Burns Statistics
Disturbed by reports of Black Mastodon users—Black women in particular—having negative experiences on this app, including being randomly banned for discussions of racism. Some of these users will not come back. All will share their experiences. The answer is not to condescendingly lecture them on “how the fediverse works,” as if their experiences are inevitable, nor to swear to do better next time. (There may not be one.) It’s to do better now lest the reputation of this app be cemented.

Hi everyone! I finally made it and am excited to be here. I haven't been very active on social media for some time, but am looking forward to this new platform.

About me: I'm a first year assistant professor in the Environmental Science dept. at an undergraduate university in Colorado. The position is teaching heavy, and I'm currently trying to figure out how to be a better teacher while also finding time to conduct research on the ecology and body size distributions of stream communities.

Queer folk (especially in the U.S.) , please take care of yourselves today.

This is actually my 2nd Mastodon acct. I was never able to regain access to it or figure out migration so I'm starting over w/ a new #introduction

I am a #Freshwater #Algae ecologist! I study algae and their macromolecules (mainly #FattyAcids) as a way to learn how human actions affect #Biodiversity and #FoodWebs. I work at a #PUI #SLAC where in between all the teaching, I mentor #Undergraduate #Research students on freshwater and other ecology projects!
