I am a first year assistant professor in #EnvironmentalScience and am a 1st generation academic. I study #StreamEcology #Entomology #BodySize and #CommunityEcology. I'm interested in understanding how communities are organized, and in the natural and human caused variability in those organizations. I use a lot of #RStats for research and in my teaching.
Trying to do more research.
Very excited to learn that an #undergraduate in my lab was invited to participate in Society for Freshwater Science's #INSTARS program! This will be their first scientific meeting 😊 see y'all in Philly! #sfs2024 #2024sfs

New Publication: Maximum likelihood outperforms binning methods for detecting differences in abundance size spectra across environmental gradients.

TL;DR: Binning methods add error and produce unreliable estimates.

Thanks to my coauthors @jimjunker @wesnerlab and no-mastodon Savina Gjoni!

Minor revisions and a potential research trip to Brazil next year? My email this morning was quite exciting!
Night hike/run up to the Bridge of Heaven near Ouray, CO. Enjoyed a blood red sunset on the way up and viewed the super blue moon from 12,000 feet up in the San Juan mountains while enjoying Oreos. Unfortunately my pics of the moon didn't come out, but trust me that it was pretty.
10 miles, ~4500 feet of elevation gain.
I've put off this R and RStudio update for too long. Pray for me.
Great work led by Savina Gjoni. Effects of temp and resources on size abundance patterns in lakes:

Interested in learning about or teaching ecological forecasting? @skmorgane and I have published our Ecological Forecasting & Dynamics class. It's 50% R tutorials on things like time-series modeling and forecast evaluation) and 50% guided reading of papers. It's designed for easy reuse & modification & we've tried to also make it usable for self-guided learners.

My 18 month old's current favorite toy is a damp wash cloth, preferably at least slightly soiled.

She carries it around everywhere saying "wah claw, wah claw."

Kids are silly

Classes start on Monday, and as the end of yet another summer draws near, I erased my white board listing out all my goals for the summer. As per usual, very few of them were crossed off as "accomplished".
C'est la vie
