Electrifying Mobility | Cyclist | Non-car owner, depreciation is something that I leave to others. #Naarm, #Wurundjeri Country. (Colonized as #melbourne #Victoria #australia )

I #electrify #mobility, brew and appreciate #japanesesake #sake #日本酒, ride #bikes.

I was a bit worried when #sake today turned up in the mail today with a big #yamaguchi profile and the first article wasn’t by @JimRion but I shouldn’t have worried because there was a big #gokyo profile, written by himself.

I should probably have a list right now but which gokyo bottles should I be on the hunt for in Tokyo?

This is good - see also the massive nationwide felica based system in japan - this has mobile apps, supports season tickets, not so good on area passes and capping though. I have a mobile Suica on my phone that I can reload from ApplePay, super convenient.

Fundamentally though, for the vast majority of users a tap and go (eftpos, CC) payment system, based around payment cards is the best way. London gets this mostly right with daily weekly and monthly caps tied to a payment card - no need to buy a pass, it just tops charging you once you hit the right level in a time period.

Once you have that you just need to provide for concessions, and people who don’t want to use an existing payment card (inc tourists who may incur foreign transaction fees). Concessions could be tied to a cc number and you could have a reloadable money card for the rest.

It’s a payment system so use the payment systems that exist and build off them.

@moh_kohn On-demand distributor busses and shared ride solutions deserve a mention, especially when electrified. Transport for New South Wales has some good example (none electric yet AFAIK). They spread out from transit hubs and key activity centres and are priced in line with busses.

Electrification and autonomy make this cheaper. It's a better solution for the sprawl we already have, even if densification (over time) supports a longer term move toward rail trunks and active transport spurs.

On Demand public transport

On Demand public transport services will run in Sydney’s north west, south west, west, eastern suburbs, northern beaches, Sutherland Shire and the Central Coast. On-demand: Ready when you are.

@finneh @ajsadauskas I am exceedingly lucky not to need a car in #naarm , but this needs to be a lot easier for everyone. Our orbital transit system is a joke and our active transport network is not nearly a joined up and comprehensive as it needs to be. All layered on the kind of low density sprawl that isn't conducive to a BCR that encourages investment in either. It will take some bold policy.
Yes, Denmark made it with flying colors: 24 hours of wind power production exceeding national demand!
It's even at 120% now.

@thiagocsf No downsides that I can think of, Lithium-Ion batteries of all types are very good at stopping and starting. Especially at the relatively low power of the average domestic #solar #pv system, it's a very gentle existence for a #battery . There's also almost nothing better that you can do with a spare solar kWh, turning it into #mobility is a very high value application.

(BTW one of my other specialist subjects is batteries, I did a battery manufacturing startup out of grad school and built a battery factory) #emobility

@craigharvey Thanks for the support. Sutton Forest is rapidly becoming one of our best sites, well it would be half way between #Sydney and #canberra and up the top of that big hill.

Just north of #hobart would be #brighton . cool weather in #tasmania is good for a fast charge.

@craigharvey @franksting I can't speak for NRMA, I work for Evie Networks. What I can say is that we have a fantastic Ops and Maintenance Team that works hard to keep ours up and running.

I'm doing the support desk today so one of them can get a proper holiday.

@lorakolodny I spent some time in the UK this year and rented a VW ID3 from UFO drive. The key difference is that there are a lot more chargers, but also a lot more cars. User experience is not great, Ionity probably win for having the simplest app to use.

there also isn't a good clearing house for availability information. Not everyone pushes their status to google maps, but this is also true in australia. We (Evie Networks do), many don't.

A lot more AC charging in the UK but that isn't much use to someone on a trip like us.
