A very “surprising pattern” that people don’t want to use fucking shit that doesn’t fucking work and depends on stealing people’s work and fucking lighting the mother-fucking planet on fire while feeding their fucking money into the greedy throats of billionaires.

⚠️ If you see a post or DM saying "your account is currently suspended for verification purposes", do NOT click on the link. It is a scam.

Fediverse servers do not ask people to verify their identity. There is an optional self-verification system, but that's just for those who want to use it. No one is ever asked to do it.

If you are in ANY doubt about ANY official-looking message, contact your own server's admin directly using their public email address on your server's website's "About" page.

Back in the day, Twitter used to be really good if I set up a thread to connect freelancers with clients. Let's see if Mastodon can do it.

Clients: if you're looking for freelancers/contractors, get in the comments

Freelancers/contractors: get in the comments

Everyone else: boosts appreciated.

The market is *dead* for freelancers and a big part of that (in my opinion) is fragmentation. Let's get that network effect *back*.

This is important to sign and share. I archive Dutch language educational games (yeah very niche, that's why they require archiving) and I have to deal with lost media a lot. Don't let games disappear, please.

It's Sunday.

Today let's remember that good people still exist. You're probably one of them.

Don't let your anger take your focus off of the people around you or the community that you belong to. Remember, no matter what anyone does, they can not change who you love and care for.

Practice kindness whenever possible.

Give to your community.

Lend assistance when needed.

Just because the world around you seems to be on fire, doesn't mean you can't be a little oasis of peace.

Also, I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but I'll say it again:

Part of your job as a senior is to tell your juniors about your fuckups. The embarrassing cringe reckless and lazy bullshit that you did when you were new, and the various times you brought down Prod. We ALL did it sometime. And then tell them: the moment you realized you fucked up, I know, the impulse is to try and cover it up, but don't do it. Come to the seniors you trust, and they'll help you unfuck it, and fight management tooth and claw like mamma and pappa bears to defend you from any shitheads in management. Because that's what our seniors did to us.

The naked kitties are helping!

I don't want to outsource my thinking to a machine.

I don't want "art" averaged from some aggregation of actual artists' work.

I can write my own fucking emails.

I can write my own fucking code and design my own fucking games.

And I want art that comes from the brains of human artists. Who feel and whose soul goes into their work.

All this stuff is clever and I am sure there are uses for it but the things that are actually valuable in life can't be reduced to a fucking prompt.

Just discovered:

Teleios

Ancient Greek for "perfection"

A massive spherical bubble, 11, 46, or 157 light-years across (they aren't sure yet)

Could be from a white dwarf slurping up a companion star, exceeding a mass limit, and exploding

In our Milky Way, not an ORCS (Odd Radio Circles at intergalactic distances)

Discovered by Miroslav Filipović and team of Western Sydney University using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)

p.s. The scammers seem to be asking for people's credit/debit card details. Fediverse admins will never ask for anything like that.

(Admins might call for donations with links to Ko-Fi etc, but it's not connected to verification and they would never ask for anyone's card themselves.)

Mastodon's actual self-verification system doesn't involve any payment cards or personal identity. It's also totally optional and mainly just for people who own a website: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account

p.p.s. If you see any kind of scam on here, click ⋯ below the scam post and then "Report".

When you report a scam, make sure you select the option to anonymously forward the report to the origin server so that they can suspend the account itself. Suspending an original account is the fastest way of stopping scammers.

@FediTips
Unless the origin server is being run by the scammer, of course.
@dec23k @FediTips Servers can block eachother, & you can report the server to the hosting provider & domain registrar.
@FediTips this is one of the fascinating things about Mastodon that none of other major SM platforms have: someone to report a problem to, ask support for, or verify an actual issue.

@FediTips
I have to imagine the fediverse users must be the hardest to scam. 🚫

While Facebook users the easiest 🤔

@FediTips

Could you possibly share more info on this self verification please?

@_TroikaFox_

Yeah, it works totally differently to what the scammers are trying to do.

Self-verification works by linking to your account from your website in a certain format. More info at:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

It doesn't reveal your identity, it just confirms your ownership of a website or web page.

It also doesn't involve any kind of credit card, which is what the scammers are trying to get hold of. The posts I saw were trying to trick people into giving card numbers etc.

@FediTips

Oh I understand now I connected to my gravatar and that is why it shows up in green on my profile ...correct??

@_TroikaFox_

Yeah, exactly, if you link in both directions with a special tag in the HTML code called rel=me it turns the link green as verified.

Rel=me was designed to be a general standard used by all social networks and sites so people could prove they were the same person on different platforms.

Unfortunately Google, Meta, Twitter etc refused to use it presumably because they don't like open standards 😦

But Mastodon and some others do use it.

@FediTips

thank you so much for the information. And a big thank you for what you do👍🏾

@FediTips too late, i clicked it, now I'm locked out of my account! What can I do?

@bonafried

If you ever have problems with your account, email your server admin on their public email address. This is in the "About" section of your server's website.

It is email so it works even if you're locked out of Mastodon.

@FediTips But it is a testament to the rising influence that the fraudsters think to come here right?

@ChuckMcManis

Possibly 🙂

Also it's possibly because of various governments currently trying to impose ID verification on social networks. Some countries use credit cards to do this.

If people see credit card verification mentioned in the news, they're a lot more likely to think this kind of scam is genuine.

@FediTips

Apparently something like that has been showing up on Facebook for a month ...

Two people I know fell for it because it said it was their Facebook and/or Microsoft account ...

The fact they were still able to use both didn't seem to convince them it was a fake ... and clicked ...

Guess I will hear from them what happened when it does ...

@FediTips
Oh boy. Here we go. Should've seen this coming!

@FediTips

The misspelling of "mastodon" as "mastadon" is a dead giveaway of the scam.

@wlf_warren @FediTips

Oops. Auto correct kicks in when you don't want it. Original toot corrected.

@AnthonyJK @FediTips

I did notice, and yes, I write a lot about South Korea. I'm well aware of how 'auto correct' acts! lol sometimes, corrections are hilarious 🤣🤣🤣 ~ BLΛƆKPIИK 'is interpreted as BIOPIC .... go fig? Yes know the lettering throws it, but~' Kawai, Rora' ... as 'SPIT'.

This is k-pop.social 🤔💭

😔

hehe 😁

Jeeez, sometimes I catch it before it insults someone!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

txs for the info, explained as I did see it,

But eeeeh! I rode over it 😁👍🏼

@FediTips

Good heads up!

FOR EVERYONE!!!!

to see

Thank you for posting the info for us..

See ya around 🌌 the verse! 😁👍🏼

@FediTips what is the self verification thing anyway? I have yet to figure it out. Is it the equivalent of the blue checkmark on shitter
@evilcookies98 @FediTips
I'm not an expert on this, so take it with a little bit of doubt. But I have seen people on here who have a green checkmark followed by an also green link (probably their website) underneath their usernames. So yeah, it is like that blue checkmark on birdsite. (I think)

@evilcookies98 next post down the thread. Unlike pay-to-play blue checks, the verification just proves that you own the domain that you're linking in your bio. https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/114836938320293957

@evilcookies98

I've done a guide to it here: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

TL:DR - If you link to your website from your Mastodon account AND if you link to your Mastodon account from your website with a specific format, the link will turn green on your profile. This also works with two-way linking to accounts on some other platforms.

@FediTips On the bright side:
Fedi has become popular enough to make those kinds of scams viable for the attackers. Wooo!

@FediTips auha! Nun werden auch schon im #Fediverse #Phishing Mitteilungen verbreitet.

Danke für diesen Hinweis!

@FediTips Mastadon sounds extremely legit.

@FediTips Also block & report such #Scammers as #Spam & Impersonation.

In case anyone found some that don't get taken down by admins within a few days, let me know and I'll add them to a public blocklist that can be queried and imported from here:
