Back in the day, Twitter used to be really good if I set up a thread to connect freelancers with clients. Let's see if Mastodon can do it.

Clients: if you're looking for freelancers/contractors, get in the comments

Freelancers/contractors: get in the comments

Everyone else: boosts appreciated.

The market is *dead* for freelancers and a big part of that (in my opinion) is fragmentation. Let's get that network effect *back*.

#FediHire

@belldotbz Bit of a niche one, but I'm a Stage Manager - I coordinate theatre shows once they're up and running - and that comes with loads of transferable skills in admin, project management, research and a bunch more

I'm currently free from September onwards if anyone needs support with events and shows

@belldotbz OK, here goes: I'm a freelance translator (Swedish/French/Norwegian/Danish to English), proofreader, editor and copywriter.

I use my human brain to make sure your words appeal to other humans, in English.

@belldotbz
Can do data work (beyond MS Excel and deep into SQL, etc), research, writing, and funding applications (e.g. for EU schemes). Domain knowledge covers green technologies, climate change, Spain, software.
Can't do: self marketing.
@priryo @belldotbz interesting.... :) besides data wrangling do you have general software dev skills (in python!)?

@Transflux
Interesting question! I have written some toy projects in python, and have been learning C and now C++ for the last couple of years.
That has given me a much more fundamental understanding (of software dev, design practices, build and other tools) than I had before.
Put together I am confident I could quickly get up to speed on python software dev, however I can't claim to be up to speed in its libraries or current idioms. Also no paid experience there; it's somewhere I'm looking to move into.

@belldotbz

@belldotbz

Freelance what? Hitmen? Pastry chefs? Event planners?

You don't specify, so prospective clients can't choose

@MarkHoltom Good effort chipping in and helping everyone! I'm sure if there's clients looking for a freelance pedant, they'll be in touch.

@MarkHoltom @belldotbz
As it happens I’m a freelance hitman whose preferred methodology is serving poisoned pastries I bake myself at events I coordinate

Preferably to pedants

[Excellent idea for a thread, Andy. Wish I needed someone right now. Bookmarking for future needs]

@kims @MarkHoltom @belldotbz I think this was a scene in the movie Bullet Train. Apart from that, I appreciate the effort to match people with work

@belldotbz @MarkHoltom I'm sure Mark's intentions of requesting more specific conditions are meant to benefit the overall spirit of OP's message. I also wondered what 'freelancers' they meant.

Also, with Mastodon being a global socnet I had to also assume he meant all remote type requests/offers.

An industry (and possibly local area) focus is needed to maximize results.

@thedarkener @belldotbz @MarkHoltom Typically, most folks who are "freelancers" or "ccntract" workers know whether or not they fit within the framework... and hitmen typically don't call themselves "freelancers" or "contract" workers... we prefer the term, "conflict resolution managers," and we don't typically find work through social media (we have handlers to keep us shielded). If you have to ask whether this applies to you, you are probably not part of the target market.

@belldotbz @MarkHoltom

Getting strange looks for my bark of laughter when I read this on my crowded subway train 🤣🤣🤣

@belldotbz @MarkHoltom no, don't tease, I would genuinely love to be a freelance pedant. I mean proof-reading is kind of the same thing, but only kind of....
@MarkHoltom @belldotbz Imagine all three combined - assassins that poison the Hors d'Oeuvres at the events they plan.

@MarkHoltom
I'd say Hitmen are a strict subset of Event Planners.

@belldotbz

@belldotbz I’m open for part-time remote work on Ruby (plain and Rails or other frameworks) development, developer experience tasks. Find more details at https://www.issylong.com/work-with-me/

I make developer experience better in Ruby and Rails projects. I enjoy: * Improving your linting, typechecking and code quality setup (think RuboCop, Sorbet, and friends). @belldotbz This is a great idea. I remember twitter being very good for finding work. Even landed a couple of perm jobs with great companies back in the day.

Anyway. Freelance front-end developer and CMS wrangler. With a score of 23 on this 👉 https://www.nicchan.me/blog/youre-not-a-front-end-developer-until-youve/

I’m pretty good at writing good clean HTML and CSS. I’m one of those people that’s done a lot of “turn this design into a web page” kind of jobs, and I like to think I'm pretty good at it.

Available now.

@FiXato @belldotbz I did, then I edited the post. It should work now.
@stairjoke hmm, strange, looks like the edit hasn't propagated/federated to the instance I'm on. Okay, sorry for pointing out something already fixed 😅

@belldotbz A hashtag would help keep something like this going, then it’s not dependent on a particular thread.
@jjLitke good shout, I'll edit. Do you reckon the fedihire one is best?

@belldotbz @jjLitke

Maybe a second hastag with location you service.

# FedihireSydney
# FedihireLondon
# FedihireUK
Etc.

Maybe even a third one with general area of what you do

@belldotbz I keep thinking that there's gotta be a better way of organizing around the #FediHire hashtag that's more than just broadcasting into the void....
@McNeely yeh it's super noisy on there huh
@McNeely @belldotbz Set up a curated channel, a bit like programming@newsmast.community & co (intentionally not @'ing them).

@joachim

I suggested location and type of work hashtag. To make it easier for those searching to hire someone relevant.
