@calmeilles except not only US government wants this, but perhaps every government and every large corporation. Or maybe, there is rather expectation, that there is demand for this control, so some people speculate to provide this control (?)

@davoloid sometimes, it may just an evolution.

It is little bit like the sword or arrow vs. the shield or armor competition in the history of military. Each time new kind of communication channel, free speech or media emerges, new race to control it emerges.

In EU, we have currently the "chat control" issue, the tide is turning from GDPR, which was basically a good thing, to "chat control" demands, which is encryption regulation.

Anyway, this joke is pretty old, but kind of timeless.
