Do any of your characters wear glasses?

Not really, glasses, other than sunglasses or smart glasses like solutions for augmented reality, have become more rare in the future do to technologies and medical procedures have changed a lot.
As an example you can use eye drops to temporary get rid of near or farsightedness.
However like with all disabilities the consent in the Union is to not push any treatments upon citizens.
This is also true for other disabilities.
It's usual that children with non lethal disabilities are not treated in that way, until they reach their earlier teenager years and can consent to treatment by their own choice.
However if a kid has emotional or physical pain do to it's disability it will be treated as soon as possible.
Still it is common to see kids with disabilities all over the Union and they are integrated as everyone else, cared for and loved. A not to small percentage of people decides to stay with their disabilities into their adulthood, to make live more diverse and easier for the kids.
Some even take great pride in their ability to be different and make their solutions a piece of art, like with ornate prosthetics as an example.
It's just not very common in the Unions Alliance military.
However glasses are more commonly seen in the Unions Military and in the Rim, where a bunch societies have a very late 20./ early 21. Century earth capitalist system or even earlier systems...
Honestly now that I'm thinking about this Mondira could have some.

What are any of your characters hiding? (A fantasy, fear, strength, talent, an unpopular or controversial opinion, prejudice, etc.) Why are they hiding it?

The Ice Queen J.Ripley Johanson:
Terran Foreign Minister, hides from Kira & Anika why she acts so cold.
The history of both families, Kira's biological & her adoptive Family (Ripley's & Anika's) have a long lasting connections.
In her views, she protects the Union (galactic), Terra Unika & her family. She also does not openly speaks about her own time in the Rim as an young adult.

Ayanami: The 'antagonist infernale' is for all intense & purposes a Ghost, a disembodied voice for all that work for them or against them. Nobody knows, who is behind the name, is it if a person, a group or even an AI, which species, gender identity or how they required enough power to control a, seemingly, Union friendly Army.
Ayanami is one of the most common first, family & cooperation names in the galaxy not limited to Terrans/Humans.
No one knows, who they really are, even the pronoun they is simply used to have a pronoun at all.
Even their 'henches' don't know who pays their income & protects their identities. Only Ariæne is rumored to have learned this secret, but Ariæne also has severe memory issues.
The level of technology that went into the Nethrazier, Ayanamis rumored Flagship exceeds even more advanced Union prototypes according to eye witnesses. It's far to big for the attributed capabilities & it's rumored to have stopper large attack fleets of the Eltaryn alone.
It's a ghost ship that appears out of nothing (FTL probably), that spills black armored troups, not unlike Alliance soldiers, onto the battlefields wherever Eltaryn are encountered & evaporates into the void as soon they are beaten.

My answer to my own silly prompt.

I replace Starships with Animals/insects and all people with tiny versions of them self.

So the Ghoz'Tarc would be a humble bumble bee of course her name would be Ashlei. And in between her tiny fluffy für/hair the tiny Kira, Arkham and all the others would live.
Arkham would control her by using a lot of tiny strings similar to the scenes in Ratatouille

In comparison the Phoenix, the Unions Flagship would be a goose. Beautiful to look at but a nasty surprise if you anger her. The tiny universe variant people would live on the feathers I guess.

Alternatively I replace a stories cars with banana peels. So people would slide on Banana peels to work like they are a sort of ice skater. Busses would be several people figure skating in a row holding hands.

How do your characters feel about seeing doctors or anyone in the medical field?

Kira is your typical overworked leadership person.
She is in constant treatment for her scars from her childhood (physical and psychological) and has a relatively relaxed stance about it, but she also does this thing of pushing herself harder as doctors would say is healthy. Her eating disorder is also a point of friction. Since the meld Kira is a constant visitor in the Sickbay, mostly for monitoring.

Since universal healthcare is an basic sentient right in the Union, it's free & a lot of conditions, we only can treat symptoms nowadays, are just another thing that can be healed if wished for.
Lost limbs or dysfunctional organs can be treated and healed if wished for. With technical implants, cloned replacement or, in very rare cases, with nanites. But nanites are a sort of last resort because you are never sure that they leave your body, that's why there are strict rules for nanite treatment patients and diseased nanite patient's bodies. If used correctly they are harmless for everyone but it's not very easy.

One of the reasons Mondira joined the Alliance, despite being a Rim Wolrdler is that Eodin's healthcare system pretty much equals the today's US healthcare if people like Trump and coconspirators run unchecked.
She cares deeply for her family and their health. The Alliance offers Family members off non Union members treatment with Union standards, for free in Union facilities or payments for outer institutions. Her father has used this service, her little brother rejected it several times and her mother would not even accept it, if her life would depend on it. One does not betray the Rim from her perspective. Not even if it costs ones life. At least she doesn't holds it against her family that they used the alliance offer. Well her family other than Mondira.

Still no answer but funny* sidenote the idiom exists in German as well to cry your eyes out - sich die Augen rausheulen and the slight variation 'ausheulen' which means to cry until your eyes are empty (of tears).

And because German doesn't translate well syntax wise, into English (& vice versa), I try to translate this with German Syntax into English: 'one/itself the eyes (to) out cry.'

*Funny like huh I didn't need to know this but who knows what it's Worth in the future but seriously why even?

The confusional element might come from the fact, that this is an closed question, that does not actively encourage sharing of more information, sapient sentience often expects a follow up question, or interpret this as an invitation to talk about this feelings, while most of this ships crew simply saw it as the question itself and answered strictly to the context of the asked question.

The distribution is as following, around 93% answering yes, around 4% did not answer and around 3% answered with no.
This might be an indication that some crew members are in a psychological struggle. I would recommend a gentle probing of the subject matter and see if we can increase this individuals feeling of connection."

Kira: "Don't laugh. After I lost my family, my genetic one...
I wanted to play cello.

I imagined myself, like in that one surviving pre climate disaster video.

Sitting on the edge of a cliff playing against the wild ocean waves, a full moon on the dark violet sky, stars in the background. Putting my pain into the music.

Dad bought one for me, he wanted to teach me, how to play when he was to become a teacher instead of a soldier...
Well we know how that turned out.

The Alliance gave me something new. Martials and the ability to defend others.
Maybe in another life, I would have been a musician, playing for people on star cruisers...
Who knows, maybe Anika could have been my manager or captain of that cruiser.
Setting up gigs with Srockbands(*) or stuff like that, seeing me falling in love with a professional dancer named Abbishek Pakthi.
I don't believe there is any universe in which Arkham isn't a pilot of sorts. Probably she would be steering the cruiser. Funny thought.

Maybe mum would have been happy sitting with dad in the audience after retiring from politics.
Away from all the war against the Eltaryn.

That said, in that universe, I may haven't been on Friendship Station to begin with. Never loosing my family, not living through hell.
Never getting closer to the Johanson's.

What assumptions did you make about one of your characters when you first created them?

They often develop far deeper than I expect them to.
As an example 'Good Boy Jack' a dog like humanoid was meant as a throw away NPC in a DND session.

Since than, he has become a throw away character with a background story, mayor of a dimensional and time shifted Ferun Underdark village, built on the ruins of a once mighty Drow city.

Arkham, at the beginning I just wanted a pilot, that hangs around in the cockpit all day & is to lazy to do anything else. Instead she has become one of my favorites.

Kira was ment to just be a Commander Shepard, from my Mass Effect runs (Videogame Playthroughs).
Well now she is commander of her own ship, in my own universe & has a backstory that reads like the epitome of cranked up bad character motivations...
Iy was, indeed, just ment as a gag trope for the run as an unwritten backstory.

Anika was ment to be just a nod in that backstory, to a character I love from Star Trek and now, in the WIP she is a full character.

The Icequeen also was just ment to be a cold hearted birch of a adoptive mum, but now is a almost fully fledged out person with her own dark history & the role of Terran Foreign Minister, with nebulous ties to Kira's family next to her husband...

The whole family story of the Knoxs & Johansons reads like an blown out of proportion KPop meets Lord Of The Rings family drama by itself...

AJ aka Antagonist Junior or Ariæne Johnsen was ment to be a non evil antagonist that simply occupied the adversary role to Kira...

Assumption, I can not write simple characters, not if they need to stay in my mind for longer than the time I need writing on a text in a given moment.

If one of your characters could visit any time period in the history of their world, which would they choose? Why is that?

None.

Temporal Mechanic is a field of the RYDE physics, time travel happens more accidentally while higher speeds are achieved however this is only forward in time, do to the fact that time acts differently for an enclosed system that is faster in relation to its surroundings.
Without the Garcia - Nirnquest system, every planet visited with Faster Than Light would bring the crew "forward" in time.

A theoretically possible RYDE usage back in time, could work but would mean the ship has to "cut its anchor" to our reality and "submerge" entirely in the sub dimension that is used for FTL travel. But there are more problems attached to that completely theoretical usage of the RYDE Propulsion next to the fact that no ship ever was registered as coming back after being submerged.

It's not as easy as throwing you around a star in an weird angle or move earth (Terra) backwards, you basically would need to enter the anti time stream but how that should be possible even the people in Star Ryde can't explain or achieve.

That said if they COULD manage most of them had elaborate discussions over Temporal Manipulation and why it is bad and has to be avoided.
Not even Ayanami would suggest time alterations, but they would probably try to secure possible working back travel time machines against usage by others.

How does your antagonist behave when they’re sick or injured?

Nobody ever has seen Ayanami as in a physical form. It's a disembodied set of voices, mails, etc.
They, in lack of a better term, are as mysterious as it gets, not a single call or contact 'in person' (in official meeting spaces where henches have to report in person to an empty room full of holographic projections for their mission) is answered in less then a minute. This is the main reason people expect them to be a group of people or an A.I.

For Ariæne it's every day since they lost the ability to form coherent memories. Waking up disoriented and confused, finding themselves, often after having the same horrible nightmare dream/only memory flash back they remember in all detail...
Finding an unfamiliar room, books over books, tablets and post it's notes scattered in an otherwise very empty room, besides two corners which seem to be work spaces in an unfamiliar complex.
It's stressful at least and without K. the one Hench that always seems to calm them down it can get nasty for everyone else.
AJ has shot people if they found their weapon, hurt people with pencils etc. still their services seem so valuable to Ayanami that they protect and support Ariæne with everything including K.
Rarely AJ seems to have anything that resembles a disease but the memory thing seems bad enough.
Without all the notes and files on tablets some days it would impossible to bring them to a functional state.

Tell us about a landmark in your world.

Well every today city on Terra is a special landmark if it survived into the 24. Century.

Vegas only exists do to an incredible stubbornness of the people that lived in its ruins. Today (2325 from our perspective) the highest point of the city reaches 700 meters into the air.

It's a multilayered city similar to cities we see depiction of in Star Wars, Cyberpunk or the Macropoles in Warhammer 40k but it's not as sinister and gigantic.

The every level of the city has an elaborate system of holograms and mirrors to let it look like the real sky is directly above.
The original Vegas didn't survived the Eltaryn Attack on Earth and it was rebuilt with alien Technologies and new discoveries in material production after the initial first contact with the Talithi people.

The lowest part is an living museum exhibition in which historical recreations of the city exist. Gambling and Neon lights are as dominant as today but people get their money back after they gambled it away plus they get a Holo/NIN creation what this would have ment in our time.

The layer in between show the change in Terran society as well and are seen as a time capsule or more like a time cake.

Vegas highest plain and it's surrounding are called New Vegas, they are a poster child of Solar Punk and the Terran spirit to make their world a paradise again, even if its pretty much a garbled/toxic mess. It is a metroplex in which all kinds of Terrans and Xeni Terrans live. It's also surrounded by lash green farms but still the desert has a hold on the area.

Prepared maybe but not ready, the moment you see a 5 Story tall blue insectoid, tossing your fellow soldiers around like they are trelupian flies. See their life light snuffed out like a candle and the next moment a freaking giant Gorilla that breaks through a wall next to you, so you have to function, to fight for the lives of everyone around you, you know you're not ready. Not the slightest, and even if you get routine the stories of others who broke get to you... And as if this wasn't bad enough the species in the galaxy still have nothing better to do as to threaten each other on every occasion."

Arkham: "Not much to add here in a more uplifting mood, the moment you see your world for the first time from space. It's beauty, it's insignificance in the great scheme...
It's weakness, it's need for protection."

Ash: "Being able to grasp what an average biological existence means. I rarely have to fight to have energy while for humanoids and others it's a constant struggle, if parts of me break down I am constructed with redundant systems and can reroute the functionality til the part is replaced. I do not posses a body feeling even if the Ghoz'Tarc is my body. I only started to understand that what this means after the merge with the commander."

What would your MC say their personal weaknesses or flaws are? Would other characters agree?

Kira: “People told me all my life I'm to eager to trust others, this seems partly true but people do not see that I trust all people as far as I can throw them, height meters don't count. I was bad cook for a long time and well my survival experience made me non demanding in case of taste and edibility.
My right hook is not as strong as my left hook and I am not as quick while running as I could be, also I'm sure that my battlefield awareness could be better."

Arkham: "People always told me I'm short tempered, yeah guess what that's just a nervous system feature of a smaller body size, I'm like one of this weird birds in the history of Terra that's extinct by now. How they where called Kilibris?
Oh and don't get me started about "my attention seeking" according to some people I worked withy because I wear my uniform like this. If the Union would finally figure out what of the Uniforms components made me want to rip my skin off I could print one without that component...
You wouldn't believe how I would look on my privates if I wouldn't wear underwear under the uniform."

Ashlei: "I was told that people do not appreciate practical jokes including but not limited to: gravity, atmosphere, auto destruction sequences or false alarms. Still most of them found my thoughts about this topics 'funny'. Thus I concluded, that I am more entertaining than I thought."

and I cut my answer here because I would need to answer with on at least 3 other characters and their perception of the three to answer this adequately. However as the author_ity I decided most people agree on that and have sometimes very own pov's.

Are there any factions or groups within your world? Are they good, bad, or somewhere in between?

I have around 100 I can think of out of my head, alone 72 are sub factions of the one bigger faction that is on the spot light for the story of Star Ryde, if I take the finer worldbuilding into account I would end with over a thousand probably twice or even more because basically, if you live in an city/village that's also a faction. Your street and your neighbors are a faction, your parents are a faction inside your family faction. You and me are in the faction of Fediverse users.
And I honestly don't feel the slightest urge to list all or any of the factions in my main story and explain all of their positions that also may differ inside a single faction.

The good guys exist on a scale and the bad guys also exist on the same scale and in between is a LOT of space.

How do you refuel your creativity?

I don't, it refuels itself in the weirdest way possible.
I don't want to give all the secrets away but my brain jumps into overdrive for no reason at the weirdest situations.
Sadly this isn't anything I can control, I just can shut up and not blabber like a lunatic...

As an example right now I was struck
Lunatic - a Luna Tick.
1. A moon sized Tick.
2. A Fusion of Sailor Moon (Manga/Anime) and The Tick (Comic/Cartoon)
-> ['M'anga+ Cart'oon" = Moon...🤦🏾]
3. An insect that eats moonlight -> UV-Beetle not get mixed up with a VW-Beetle...
4. Tickling a black cat (because of Luna the black cat in Sailor Moon).

I can not prevent such excursions but I can shut up and decide to not follow the whole trail, this doesn't makes it easier to write tho.

Silas Crosby: "Isn't there anything else you could do? Why do you want to rejoin the military? Aren't you to old to join? Why don't you retire early? Don't you want to see your Grandchildren grew up? How high is up? I have many answers to them especially the last one almost baffled me. I just answered higher as left but lower than above."

When was a time that your MC had to say no but wanted to say yes.

In Star Ryde it happens to Kira in the first chapter.
And if people would have agreed with her it would have been that.

Ash is programed to support Terrans in their daily life however it's complicated to determine when a no is better then ayes and vice versa.

Arkham says no many times in so many nuances that it is hard to figure out what her thoughts about this situations are.

A certain character was planned to say no even more regularly as Arkham to construct a bilingual joke that was also an Easter egg to the character that inspired my version.
But I scrabbed that idea because it just didn't felt natural.

Tell us about a time when one of your characters put their foot in their mouth.

Asza'ni are actually, physical capable of doing this, they have a humanoid body but are actually way more flexible than other humanoid species. Which led to a weird encounter as they first met Humans (not Terrans) who still used a form of English as their language.

It ended with every Asza'ni in the room standing with one of their feet in their mouth. Which defused a rather explosive situation that could have started a war. Try to stay serious if you see 10 opposing Aliens chew their soles. It also was kinda impressive that none of them lost their balance while doing so.

Terrans on the other hand are most times incredibly blunt and stand to what they say and carry the outcome. They also tent to bluntly state 'that this comment' was hurtful.

So the character that really struggles with this is Mondira, despite her being more blunt than the average Human from Eodin, her socialisation is more that of an human from our time.

She regrets things like telling Arkham that she is kinda jealous of her having a relationship with Kira, because she sees Kira as her personal Hero.
Kira doesn't want this kind of appreciation while Arkham has a field day with that situation.
For her, having a romantic relationship is something completely new and she enjoys it way to much, that someone else envies her for that, even if it isn't for romantic reasons.

Mondira feels similar in case of Ashlei because Ash and the captain are basically mind linked which is something Arkham pretty much can relate too.
