Here is the history of Star Ryde since I actually started writing on its story and not only on its characters and worldbuilding, in November of 2024:

As you can see at the second most recent answer it still throws twists at me, in unexpected but not unappreciated ways. I found it interesting that seemingly everything I set up in chapter one and two seems to unfold into a sci-fi political thriller. We will see how this will evolve and how I can build a bridge into the rest of my planned universe and what it means for some background characters that suddenly seem more plot relevant.

Do any of your characters have an unusual or uncommon pet? What is it? How did they acquire it?

Pet or the German name Haustier
(Haus = House - Tier ist the same word as in English but in German it means animal)
are seen as insults by Terrans in the 2300.

Animal companions are not owned, they choose to stay with someone, a lot of animal languages have also been decoded & can be used thanks to universal translation (it takes a bit longer since animals have no neural implants).

In the Background a Somwhar Musician from the Planet Khalit lives on Terra together with a red cat he calls Bob. Somwhar are best described as humanoid felines & Khalit has a exorbitant variety of different people of them. Most of them hate Terran cats. Not Somwhar Ovate Reinbo, he finds Bob very cool and amusing. Even if he is shunned for it by his people, Bob just showed up one day & improved his life.

Tell us about your MC’s bravest moment.

Kira: some call it indoctrinated some call it brave. Joining the Alliance Military forces with fourteen.
So young you are not pulled into service but educated into technology & mechanics of ships, strategy, tactics, knowledge of how weapons are build, what military doctrines are and schooled how to defuse the dangerous situations non violently. Still the Alliance Pre Education (closest translation short A.P.E.) program isn't without challenges and challengers, the skills are helpful everywhere in space, but joining the military that early even with its leave clause doesn't sits right with everyone.

Arkham: running away from home and deciding to take her life in her own hands.

Ashlei: can AIs be brave?

Is your MC an immigrant or newcomer in the place where they live? If so, where did they emigrate from and where do they currently live?

Technically speaking yes if we are very precise. The Ghoz'Tarc is a Union Alliance Spaceship. The Union Alliance is part of the Union but not a Place where people get born (usually) so the whole crew migrates to their work and living space at the missions beginning. Since the Alliance is a Military not everyone can just decide to live on its ships.
As many ship travelers today the Ghoz'Tarc crew has to deal with different laws & usual habits in different places.
You are probably also a migrant if you ever moved into a new place for work, even if your just switched between parts of the city. You might not feel that way or people might not treat you differently for that (depends on the people in the city and how up they have the stick up their arse and if it penetrates their brains already*) but technically you are.

Have any of your characters ever been in a fight?

Plenty, melee or close combat fighting is part of the Alliance training. Since they all are soldiers all of them have had training fights and at least for the Ghoz'Tarc crew survived an encounter with the Eltaryn, which always turns into a battlefield as soon something in them clicks.

993. As we are approaching Prompt 1000 and there’s been a lot of reflection on this project (for the host, floofpaldi), let’s reflect on our writing journeys, how far we’ve come, friends we made, what we’ve learned along the way, etc?

I have a hard time calling 'met online people' friends in general, this has to do with my inner workings but despite this I would consider some people here today my friends.

Especially Penned Possibilities has made quite an impact on my life.

It's the reason I stayed on Mastodon where my IRL friends, I moved over with from Twitter are mostly inactive by now or post so rarely that I don't even remember them being here.😅

I started to work on my SciFi story again which laid down for a decade & even if every word is a battle against my demons it's awesome to see that it has over 50.000 words by now that aren't pure character studies or worldbuilding.

Did any of your characters have a favorite comfort item as a child? If so, at what age did they stop using it? Do they still have it?

No and it just clicked that that is something I have to fix. It would just make a lot of sense.

Shouldn't be to much of a hassle, to find some and add it to some characters, for the whole crew it might be a bit complicated.

In case I can't I will make a 1D30, 5D10 or a 1D100 random list, containing items like teddy bears, a coin or something like that.

Well I said no but that's sorta wrong Kira has one, the Photo of her biological family,

Since I am writing in an war containing setting, I maybe should add this, if and who a character may have lost through war, to the who is who...🤔

How do you balance making (emotional) demands on the reader with taking care of them?

Giving my characters a bit of 'silent downtime' that should give the reader a bit to calm down too, as long that I am not putting another character in an uneasy spot.

That's the difference between old Star Trek and new Star Trek to me. I think, a lot of it would be better today if we not only had 10 episodes per season thus giving a bit more development. Since Discovery ST has this jam packed scenes one after another. No side character development if the person isn't going to die or be severely traumatized in the same episode & than not going back to it next episodes ever. Making the cast pale in comparison to old Trek's SCs.

Strange New Worlds does it a bit better but still to Jam packed. A good story doesn't throw 18.000 elements at you & goes on directly into action again and again and again and again and again ~...
That's a problem with a lot of stories today.

Ayanami: that would ruin the surprise, but if Ayanami can be trusted it's securing that Unions survival against the Eltaryn. Ayanami themself doesn't get much light shed on them. Even from the perspective of Ariæne who is their right hand Ayanami could be just a bunch of Dorilians* in a trenchcoat.

Ariæne: Finding a way to heal their memory, either fixing its fragmentation, the ability to make new ones that stay & will someday replace the old disconnected ones that haunts them. Reanimating their dead wife... Which is impossible.

*Dorilians are one of the cruel jokes in the universe, a collective mind of high aggression & the ultra predator on their homeworld, are just fluffy sentient, soft bodied creatures for everyone else, which toxicity makes you a bit tired & which teeth can't even cut through average alien skin.➡️

⬅️ Dorilians are only dangerous to the average non Dorilian homeworld creature, if they manage to cover your breathing holes, if you are even need to breathe.

They are fluffy & look like an animated pillow or plushie to most other species.
They can be dangerous if they get hold of an exoskeleton (Exskells) but their slow reflexes need AI support,
otherwise they are just as quick as a Terran Turtle.
That said there individual & collective mental capabilities are among the highest in the galaxy.
It's a sad joke that even a Terran mice is a deadly creature to them.

On their homeworld, they just float around in big numbers & hunt in large swarms even weaker pray. If there sinister, predatory mindset would be supported by a more useful body people might even take their warmonger personalities more serious.
But as they are they are more an annoyance. The Union declared their homeworld isolated "for security."

Jennifer, after her Grandmother, Harvey, named after her Grandfather.

Identity: female
Body type: sturdy framed, broad shoulders, muscular.
Height: 198
Hair: Black with bright red highlights.
Eye color: bright green

Single child of terra exiles (Animal meat farmers).
J. has killed animals & eaten their meat regularly, until she entered the A.P.E., since then she enjoyed a switch to lab grown meat & a more vegetable/fruit/nut based diet.

She focused in the fields: leading & moral, body exercises incl. dancing, heavy weapon & explosives specialisation, medical first response & asymmetric warfare.

She presents herself as a very simple person, that has a kinda dumb sense of humor. She is protective & supportive but takes great care of not being intrusive.
Her field role is Ramp Sow (a sort of tank in today MMO terms).

Ashlei never showers, Kira and Arkham do it at least once every two weeks in space. Even with the almost infinite energy, refurbish food waste, water refreshment etc filtering out soaps and oils is harder for the system. The rest is done with a washing cloth and a towel.
And I leave it with that because the whole water refurbish on board the Ghoz'Tarc is longer than 5 Din A4 Pages... Imagine this as a thread...
One day you can read it in the future books.

Now to the answer.

Published not really an occasional piece here or their, some toot fictions. Made an AO3 account.
The WIP has now 53.000 words. Which is incredible. The characters exist in a way more evolved state and at least Kira & Anika now have a written story to begin with.

I have no clue, how I ever get to the development parts I created here, sofar it's a teenage drama moving into a political thriller (both genres I rarely touch as a reader).

I am clearly a chaotic pantser that tries to stay organized & someone that fights hard to get words out. As eloquent I may appear with words at times the WIP is a constant rinse & repeat.😅

Okay maybe it's also a sign for megalomania to create a whole universe before the story.🤷🏾‍♀️

1001. Is your MC confident or not? Tell us why.

That is highly dependent on the character and the situation/topic.

Kira has to be seen as confident in her decisions, which is to a degree toxic but as the acting captain it is necessary.
That said she knows that she doesn't know everything & is always open for discussions if the time allows it. In a life or death situation with no time to react she is non negotiable in her commands.
In interpersonal things she knows what she wants & knows what she has to offer, still it's not all the time easy or simple.

Arkham as Flight Commander is in a similar position. It's her decision making that can make the difference between life & death even if she doesn't agree with orders. On a professional level that's no problem on a inter personal level she would often appreciate a cloaking device.

Ashlei calculates probabilities & knows facts, that's what she is build for.

It's meant to challenge established Franchises like Star Trek, Star Wars and Stargate (and others) in scale, scope and size* but with a different approach to Utopia in the world we will leave our children.
And almost all stories that exist in our universe exist in the canon too, obviously the ones that will come after I'm gone only if people pick it up.

Kira: "For swex sake...
I finished the A.P.E.-Program as one of the best do to extraordinary circumstances & my own work together with Anika. I was chosen to start directly into the S.H.A.D.E. program. I survived the deaths of my biological family at Friendship Station, I survived the time afterwards only thanks to my second family. I lost dad to the military, Anika saved my ass three! Three forking times. We joined the military, we survived the circumstances that led to our recommendations.
I survived my first incredible command fork up & saved almost 100 civilians by sacrificing seven!
Seven of the best soldiers I had the chance to work with...
I survived the day Anika went M.I.A....
Now I'm am a cyborg with a freaking A.I. merged into my brain, no offense Ash.
I can not tell how many times I started to feel the ship like my own body...
So tell me what do you think?

How would your characters describe their community or communities?

- Union worlds: multi species cultures.
Unified by necessity, mildly enlightened, compassionate, the positive outweighs the negative, a force for the right thing to do.
More than the sum of its parts.
Near Utopian, yes that's a statement many people on the inside would use, outsiders would say pretentious, arrogant, elitist, expansionist, especially Terrans. Which are views Mondira tries to change.

- Rim worlds:
Free, diverse, personal, self sufficient, progressive but cautious about 'traditional values' and their replacements. The proof of resilience.

For outsiders it's more like an unorganized, chaotic patchwork of individualist focused groups, that cling to the worst tendencies multiple species came up with.
A mostly unshackled capitalism driven, unstable conglomerate of nightmares, including Kingdoms, 'Free Democratic Republics', Autocratic states, might makes right societies.

Something Mondira has to deal with regularly, after all one of this 'nightmares' is her homeworld (Eodin).

- The Union's Alliance.
The active protection of Union and non Union worlds alike.
The active force on fighting back the Eltaryn. Peace makers.
Something Mondira supports wholeheartedly & in good faith.

For Outsiders? Expansionist, Military indoctrination forces, colonial invaders & wannabe missionaries.
That's what Mondira's mother would say, her father just hopes she returns safe, sane and healthy.

Have you ever had someone translate a story of yours (into another language)?

No I write in German or English and in some cases, I translate myself between both languages. However, since I rarely do that it takes hours.
I only let translation software help if I am absolutely incapable of finding the meaning myself (can happen at times thanks to a roughly 20/22 hours awake to 4/2 hours sleep cycle...

I have an easier way switching between the Languages for longer periods and communicating in one as switching back and for like in translation.

I am not aware if someone ever tried to translate my stuff in other languages, for themself or for others and I wouldn't ask someone until I can at least pay them some money.

Of course Human work only, if I wanted my stuff gobbled up by a f*cking CO² farm/climate grinder also called LLM or AI I could do it myself, but other than that 'I have a plank of wood in front of my head' (see above) I try to not even use Google translate or other shit like that because, it's SHIT.

To answer my own imposter toot. A high stakes stealth mission or even more dramatic.
The Cargo bay.
Because of a birthday party for some of the crew members from which one is scheduled on said cargo bay. So it's a time-sensitive, short notice, mission probably sanctioned by the captain herself.

Rose, Talisa & J.
They are not only good soldiers but also a bunch of lovely trouble makers.
They are probably 'sneaking' and 'smuggling' stuff into the main cargo bay for a party set up.
They could use the chameleon skin technology for their amors but this is usually restricted to combat or expected combative encounters and no fisticuffs while drunk on a party don't count, unless the party gets attacked by a hostile force.

Rose has probably the easiest time because she always tinkers with some systems on account and in cooperation with Chief Trawella's engineering teams.
Increasing the flow capacity of a supra conduit, as an example. So she probably smuggles in the decorations inside a box of official looking stuff.

Talisa and Rose have an incredibly good synergy to get stuff done and nobody bets an eye if marriage partners go to see each other, as long both are not scheduled at the same time.
So she is probably going to get stuff placed under the pretense to help her wife, while she, herself, is off duty.
Placing the party balloons inside a hatch, hiding a dancer (people on board of a small starship can get very creative with 'gifts').

J. Is not known for sneaking or being good in being unseen so it's distracting the target(s).
J. would probably go up to who ever is or are the recipient/s of the surprise and just casually talk them into some discussion or tell them about something something weird on deck 4 or so, probably even preparing something weird on deck 4. Or maybe it's a secret meeting of J.'s cuddle club but that's something we don't speak about. Or simply blocking line of sight...

Do any of your characters wear glasses?

Not really, glasses, other than sunglasses or smart glasses like solutions for augmented reality, have become more rare in the future do to technologies and medical procedures have changed a lot.
As an example you can use eye drops to temporary get rid of near or farsightedness.
However like with all disabilities the consent in the Union is to not push any treatments upon citizens.
This is also true for other disabilities.
It's usual that children with non lethal disabilities are not treated in that way, until they reach their earlier teenager years and can consent to treatment by their own choice.
However if a kid has emotional or physical pain do to it's disability it will be treated as soon as possible.
Still it is common to see kids with disabilities all over the Union and they are integrated as everyone else, cared for and loved. A not to small percentage of people decides to stay with their disabilities into their adulthood, to make live more diverse and easier for the kids.
Some even take great pride in their ability to be different and make their solutions a piece of art, like with ornate prosthetics as an example.
It's just not very common in the Unions Alliance military.
However glasses are more commonly seen in the Unions Military and in the Rim, where a bunch societies have a very late 20./ early 21. Century earth capitalist system or even earlier systems...
Honestly now that I'm thinking about this Mondira could have some.

What are any of your characters hiding? (A fantasy, fear, strength, talent, an unpopular or controversial opinion, prejudice, etc.) Why are they hiding it?

The Ice Queen J.Ripley Johanson:
Terran Foreign Minister, hides from Kira & Anika why she acts so cold.
The history of both families, Kira's biological & her adoptive Family (Ripley's & Anika's) have a long lasting connections.
In her views, she protects the Union (galactic), Terra Unika & her family. She also does not openly speaks about her own time in the Rim as an young adult.

Ayanami: The 'antagonist infernale' is for all intense & purposes a Ghost, a disembodied voice for all that work for them or against them. Nobody knows, who is behind the name, is it if a person, a group or even an AI, which species, gender identity or how they required enough power to control a, seemingly, Union friendly Army.
Ayanami is one of the most common first, family & cooperation names in the galaxy not limited to Terrans/Humans.
No one knows, who they really are, even the pronoun they is simply used to have a pronoun at all.
Even their 'henches' don't know who pays their income & protects their identities. Only Ariæne is rumored to have learned this secret, but Ariæne also has severe memory issues.
The level of technology that went into the Nethrazier, Ayanamis rumored Flagship exceeds even more advanced Union prototypes according to eye witnesses. It's far to big for the attributed capabilities & it's rumored to have stopper large attack fleets of the Eltaryn alone.
It's a ghost ship that appears out of nothing (FTL probably), that spills black armored troups, not unlike Alliance soldiers, onto the battlefields wherever Eltaryn are encountered & evaporates into the void as soon they are beaten.

Replace something in your story with something completely silly. As an example smithing with knitting. Or magic with beurocracy. Or switch the protagonist and their uncle. What ever tickles you fancy and sounds funny to you.

My answer to my own silly prompt.

I replace Starships with Animals/insects and all people with tiny versions of them self.

So the Ghoz'Tarc would be a humble bumble bee of course her name would be Ashlei. And in between her tiny fluffy für/hair the tiny Kira, Arkham and all the others would live.
Arkham would control her by using a lot of tiny strings similar to the scenes in Ratatouille

In comparison the Phoenix, the Unions Flagship would be a goose. Beautiful to look at but a nasty surprise if you anger her. The tiny universe variant people would live on the feathers I guess.

Alternatively I replace a stories cars with banana peels. So people would slide on Banana peels to work like they are a sort of ice skater. Busses would be several people figure skating in a row holding hands.

How do your characters feel about seeing doctors or anyone in the medical field?

Kira is your typical overworked leadership person.
She is in constant treatment for her scars from her childhood (physical and psychological) and has a relatively relaxed stance about it, but she also does this thing of pushing herself harder as doctors would say is healthy. Her eating disorder is also a point of friction. Since the meld Kira is a constant visitor in the Sickbay, mostly for monitoring.

Since universal healthcare is an basic sentient right in the Union, it's free & a lot of conditions, we only can treat symptoms nowadays, are just another thing that can be healed if wished for.
Lost limbs or dysfunctional organs can be treated and healed if wished for. With technical implants, cloned replacement or, in very rare cases, with nanites. But nanites are a sort of last resort because you are never sure that they leave your body, that's why there are strict rules for nanite treatment patients and diseased nanite patient's bodies. If used correctly they are harmless for everyone but it's not very easy.

One of the reasons Mondira joined the Alliance, despite being a Rim Wolrdler is that Eodin's healthcare system pretty much equals the today's US healthcare if people like Trump and coconspirators run unchecked.
She cares deeply for her family and their health. The Alliance offers Family members off non Union members treatment with Union standards, for free in Union facilities or payments for outer institutions. Her father has used this service, her little brother rejected it several times and her mother would not even accept it, if her life would depend on it. One does not betray the Rim from her perspective. Not even if it costs ones life. At least she doesn't holds it against her family that they used the alliance offer. Well her family other than Mondira.
