The @EUCommission just released a statement positioning open source as central to #Europe’s #TechSovereignty.

We couldn’t agree more. #OpenSource is critical to a robust and independent society.

Here’s our full statement: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/06/europes-new-tech-strategy-puts-open-source-front-and-centre/

Europe's New Tech Strategy Puts Open Source Front and Centre

Mastodon's thoughts on the EU's newly released tech and open source strategy

Mastodon Blog
We’re particularly delighted to see the @EUCommission include a call to “strengthen the open source social media space by supporting open and decentralised social media solutions and platforms. The Commission currently runs a #Mastodon instance, which hosts the Commission’s presence and plans to extend the users basis to EU institutions.”
Thanks for the mention, @Mastodon !
We are happy to be here, and to engage with this wonderful community! 💜 🐘 🇪🇺

@EUCommission @Mastodon Then please work harder to protect our intellectual property rights.

Because right now I can't put any open source work online without it being scraped into the AI machine. Open source becomes a meaningless word without copyright protection.

@jpl99 @EUCommission @Mastodon publish it in the UK? New CMA ruling seems to give you protection

@Susan_calvin

While it's a good measure, I don't think it does enough.

We need to sanction AI companies that perpetrate IP theft and we need to prevent them from engaging in economic activity, both in the UK and the EU, until these companies stop breaking the law and compensate for the damage they've done.

@EUCommission @Mastodon

@jpl99 @EUCommission @Mastodon
For real, tho.

Today I've blocked all Amazon servers repetitively scraping my gitea instance.
20 minutes since I've set up that rule ant it blocked over 105 requests.

@EUCommission Also remember that the US has stopped funding the Open Technology Fund, and Europe could start funding all related projects like Signal, TOR, and F-Droid, used daily by over 2 billion people worldwide. We need not only technological sovereignty, but also encryption, anonymity, and independent app stores.

Open Technology Fund: il futuro della privacy digitale in pericolo

L'attacco di Trump all'Open Technology Fund minaccia tecnologie per la privacy usate da 2 miliardi di persone. L'Europa può salvarle?

Agenda Digitale
@informapirata @EUCommission @Mastodon and the Commission *could* demand that Google allow F-Droid to continue operating. But it appears they've made some kind of dirty deal to allow Google to extend its Google Play Store monopoly.
@informapirata @EUCommission @Mastodon Nah, obviously the most important thing is to fund and build out slop 🤡

@30p87 I remind you that the software you are using to write this message was ALSO funded by the European Commission

@EUCommission @Mastodon

Brussels knifes privacy to feed the AI boom

Draft proposals obtained by POLITICO show EU is breaking sacred privacy regime to placate industry.

POLITICO

@informapirata @30p87 @EUCommission @Mastodon The GDPR is already too weak or a regulation set, with an abysmal enforcement track record; e.g.:

https://netzpolitik.org/2025/databroker-files-targeting-the-eu/

Yet they want to weaken it even further, for AI companies.

Targeting the EU

Precise locations and revealing movement patterns: the mobile phone location data of millions of people in the EU is up for sale. Collected supposedly only for advertising purposes, this data can also be used for espionage. European data protection is failing – even top EU officials in Brussels are affected. The EU Commission says: „We are concerned.“

netzpolitik.org
@engideer I'm sure you've already taken several steps to improve the European Union's strategies (voting for the best parties and candidates, protesting against the worst measures, participating in consultations, raising awareness among friends, family, colleagues, and party comrades).
Responding to my post, however, won't improve the situation in Europe.

@informapirata Your reply to Lucy has the tone of minimizing EU's AI obsession, hence I chimed in. Sorry if that wasn't the intention.

By the way it's neither respectful nor productive to infantilize people, like you're doing to me now.

@engideer I simply mentioned that the excellent funding from NGI (=EU) could also be used for projects previously funded by the Open Technology Fund. Therefore, both your answer and Lucy's are inappropriate (and neither respectful nor productive), both because they come from Mastodon, a platform heavily funded by the EU, and because they are off-topic.

@EUCommission Would be lovely if you've started a @peertube instance of your own as alternative to your YouTube account.

Regards to EU Commission:

had this as a reply, its not about going through steps to do this, this HAS to happen.

Get the social media and messaging apps to clean up their mess? Preventing kids from doing something won't stop them doing it, fix the source of the problem instead of prohibition.

Another thing Social media knows which user are childern and 16 years old.

I will say this again:

GET childern to 16 years old OFF social media and messeger apps. <-- this is the big deal.

@EUCommission @Mastodon
Speaking personally, I greatly value your presence here. Thanks.
I also low key enjoy the phrasing "Europe, the birthplace of Linux". @Mastodon @EUCommission

@Mastodon

Does that mean the Commission plans to exempt open source social media from the upcoming age verification requirements?

The idea of promoting open source social media is laudable and I'm grateful to hear the Commission say it, but it seems antithetical to that goal if one must use a closed-source operating system to access it.

@Mastodon @EUCommission EU funding for open-source projects is still available...

@Mastodon @EUCommission

The fundamental problem have with mastodon, and all the current "open protocol" solutions. Is that they are vulnerable to the snowball effect and manipulation.

I as a user do not control my data/account, my instance does. As instances grow they'll become more and more likely to take more and more control and eventually even command how the protocol develops. Which is exactly what happened to Email.

Mastodon needs to become decentralized, not just federated.

@Mastodon @EUCommission This is the way 🇪🇺
Step by step, we’ll get closer to the goal.

@Mastodon @EUCommission

Wow thats great👏

Canada needs to take note and follow this lead.

@Mastodon @EUCommission

i miss a clear statement that Software developed with public money MUST remain public.

Also a condemnation of Leeching.
A lot of open source software is used by
governments and commercial entitys who never contribute anything to its development or the supporting community's.

@Kerplunk @Mastodon @EUCommission

Ethics aside, contributing back has never been a condition for using OSS. Nor should it be if we want it accessible to all.

@prutser @Mastodon @EUCommission

Ethics aside, contributing back has never been a condition for using OSS. Nor should it be if we want it accessible to all.

That post is self contradictory, there can only be accessibility for all if enough contribution is made.

@Kerplunk @Mastodon @EUCommission

Nonsense. A one-person OSS project on GH is just as accessible to all as the Linux kernel.

But if you will: where in any of the OSI licenses does it mandate active contributions from users?

@Mastodon Yes, thank you!
With a mad emperor in the USA, finally even the most americanophile politicians must have realised that it might not be a great thing to be so absolutely dependent on US tech.
@Mastodon @EUCommission Using open source to serve political interests out of convenience. This isn't the first time open source has been used as a banner of sovereignty.
@Mastodon @EUCommission I would be happy, but I think with this commission in charge, it will not happen.
Rare EU W? Open-Source software is unfathomably important in this modern age of mass-surveillance by corporation and government. I would also say E2EE and file directory encryption are too, but that is a conversation for another day. @Mastodon
@skbrem
Hello greetings from Joshua Kevins the coordinator for the Nutritious Foods Uganda.
@Joshuakevins12 Hello Joshua, nice to meet you and greetings from South Africa

Greetings sir are you a farmer you know we like making international friendships so that we can share international ideas about farming

@Mastodon
However, with the Digital Omnibus (VII), the EU wants to loosen the rules on AI, and the only way to prevent it is to participate in the survey - in the link - provided by the old rules...

Let's make our voice heard! There is only a little time...

Targeted consultation on the draft guidelines for the classification of high-risk artificial intelligence systems

This consultation aims to collect feedback on the clarity of the guidelines and usefulness of the examples.

Shaping Europe’s digital future

@Mastodon @EUCommission

@veronica @feld

I left Twitter & Meta's closed platforms a long time ago.

Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.

People who are not savvy are locked into the ( #Facebook / #Instagram / #Twitter / #X ) walled gardens, because of the Network effect. ("I can't leave Facebook! All my friends are on Facebook!")

Here's a plan of action:

1) Place ads on Facebook / Twitter explaining the benefits of Mastodon. Freedom from censorship and algorithms. A community owned, open social media platform.

2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook / Twitter and deleting their Facebook / Twitter account.

3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right Mastodon instance.

4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.

5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook/Twitter migration registry.

6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.

7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook/Twitter connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones. ☺️

@Mastodon @EUCommission The choice is always open source, or giving a company leverage.
