Because right now I can't put any open source work online without it being scraped into the AI machine. Open source becomes a meaningless word without copyright protection.
While it's a good measure, I don't think it does enough.
We need to sanction AI companies that perpetrate IP theft and we need to prevent them from engaging in economic activity, both in the UK and the EU, until these companies stop breaking the law and compensate for the damage they've done.

Today I've blocked all Amazon servers repetitively scraping my gitea instance.
20 minutes since I've set up that rule ant it blocked over 105 requests.
@EUCommission Also remember that the US has stopped funding the Open Technology Fund, and Europe could start funding all related projects like Signal, TOR, and F-Droid, used daily by over 2 billion people worldwide. We need not only technological sovereignty, but also encryption, anonymity, and independent app stores.

Yet they want to weaken it even further, for AI companies.
Precise locations and revealing movement patterns: the mobile phone location data of millions of people in the EU is up for sale. Collected supposedly only for advertising purposes, this data can also be used for espionage. European data protection is failing – even top EU officials in Brussels are affected. The EU Commission says: „We are concerned.“

Get the social media and messaging apps to clean up their mess? Preventing kids from doing something won't stop them doing it, fix the source of the problem instead of prohibition.

Does that mean the Commission plans to exempt open source social media from the upcoming age verification requirements?
The idea of promoting open source social media is laudable and I'm grateful to hear the Commission say it, but it seems antithetical to that goal if one must use a closed-source operating system to access it.
The fundamental problem have with mastodon, and all the current "open protocol" solutions. Is that they are vulnerable to the snowball effect and manipulation.
I as a user do not control my data/account, my instance does. As instances grow they'll become more and more likely to take more and more control and eventually even command how the protocol develops. Which is exactly what happened to Email.
Mastodon needs to become decentralized, not just federated.

Nonsense. A one-person OSS project on GH is just as accessible to all as the Linux kernel.
But if you will: where in any of the OSI licenses does it mandate active contributions from users?

Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.
People who are not savvy are locked into the ( #Facebook / #Instagram / #Twitter / #X ) walled gardens, because of the Network effect. ("I can't leave Facebook! All my friends are on Facebook!")
Here's a plan of action:
1) Place ads on Facebook / Twitter explaining the benefits of Mastodon. Freedom from censorship and algorithms. A community owned, open social media platform.
2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook / Twitter and deleting their Facebook / Twitter account.
3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right Mastodon instance.
4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a random Mastodon instance for them.
5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook/Twitter migration registry.
6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.
7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook/Twitter connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones. ☺️
