A lot has been discussed about e-bike lithium ion battery safety due to potential fires.

Q6. Have you personally had a related issue with an e-bike battery, or do you know anyone who has?

@ascentale @bikenite A6) Never had an eBike. Found myself window shopping for one this week though. Should have some car insurance money back soon. #BikeNite

Never had an issue with our bikes over the 4 years we've had them, (Gazelle and Riese and Müller) but the batteries are quality ones.

@ascentale @bikenite

The advice I have been given by my bike mechanic is that the really cheap ebikes save money on the electronics and batteries so caveat emptor there. Anything with a Bosh or Shimano system (and there are other reputable ones) is pretty safe. We've had our Norco Scene VLTs for 5 years with no issues.

@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A6:
I've never had a problem with the 3 e-bikes we own, nor do I know anyone who has. Most of the people I know with e-bikes have purchased reputable brands from reputable dealers.
I've read that most of the issues are with sketchy off brand or non standard setups.

@ascentale @bikenite
Few here giving personal responses, because the problem is quite rare

I’ve heard issues come from people modding batteries, to expand or adapt them

Don’t do that

Regulations for standardization of sizes and connectors seems like a basic need

@ascentale @bikenite A6: There has been a number of fires around here. They often show up on the news as fires in hallways or balcony due to e-bike charging. There are a lot of china import e-bikes around here so I guess it's connected to battery quality. The advice is usually to never charge outdoors, especially in winter. And always charge while you are around and can throw the battery out if something happens. Watch out for a hot battery or strange smells from it. #bikenite
@ascentale @bikenite
No problems for us, 2 ebikes for 5 years, Minnesota year-round. We have Bosch and Brose systems ebikes.

@ascentale @bikenite used to work at a shop that specifically had a battery safety hazmat thing for recycling batteries that were dangerous (ie. not on fire yet, but swelling or likely to catch fire). We got them brought in somewhat regularly. If they were good batteries from a reputable brand it was normally that the battery was perfectly fine but not charging and reporting a dangerous fault, so we'd keep it just in case. The ones that were actually swelling and dangerous were 90% (probably actually 100%? I can't remember a good one being a problem) off-name batteries with no lab certification.

A6. Not bike batteries per se, but I live in a large tower (c. 1,000 units), and in eight years we've had two battery fires: one a robot vacuum and one a phone. Management did not provide brand details, but in both cases advised residents not to leave devices on charge while out of the flat.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A6. I have not had any issues in the nearly 4 years I have owned an ebike, and I do not know anyone who has had any issues. I am also a volunteer for my town library's ebike lending library, and we have had no issues with them for the past two years that I have been involved.

@ascentale @bikenite A6. The only issue I've had was when I got a range extender and the shop didn't wire it in right, so it would make the motor cut out.

Other than that, I've never had a problem ... probably because I went with a motor/battery from a real company that actually exists (Bosch) and not some cheap knock-off brand.

My dad always says "don't buy cheap tools" and an e-bike is a tool.

#bikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite
My ebike had a battery cell fail and it wouldn't hold a charge very well. It was just out of warranty, but I was able to buy a replacement for a couple hundred bucks and it's been rolling along steadily since then.
@ascentale @bikenite #bikenite A6: Nope, never had an ebike either, but I did once have an RC helicopter battery explode when charging, thankfully it was in a fireproof bag in a bucket of sand, but wow those things really go off and there's a lot of horrible smoke. Bike batteries a bit less so, I'm led to understand, but they're also a lot bigger. I think if I get an ebike I'll make it a little charging shed outside.
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A6. I know at least two people whose homes were destroyed/heavily damaged by e-bike battery charging failures. I don't have personal experience, except 1. An e-bike battery swelled up like a GIANT BALLOON, which the local firefighters wouldn't have anything to do with, and which I managed to offload (only barely) to the local hazmat place (!!!). Plus, the attempted acquisition of a replacement e-bike battery from the Bezos Bazaar (for the same-ebike), which resulted in a very dodgy battery, a charger that didn't work with that battery, and YET ANOTHER attempt to dump the dodgy batteries at e-waste. It was not good.

@ascentale @bikenite A6: Mark Weir, a legend in the MTB community - winner of the pro men's Downieville All-Mountain Championship eight times? - lost his home to fire when the li-po batteries he used for rc cars caught fire. He's now a spokesman for Bosch e-bikes.

@ascentale @bikenite a6. The battery on my wife’s Rad was recalled but no free replacement so I haven’t done anything about it yet
@dgodon @ascentale @bikenite sorry what?! That should not be valid. Guessing bankruptcy?
@LovesTha @ascentale @bikenite Yeah, they were in pretty bad financial shape. I heard they got bought but don’t know if that will change anything about the recall

@ascentale @bikenite A6. No e-bikes in the stable, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Amazon e-bikes by sellers with names like CNAYYYFLMKW.

Not yet
We've got several batteries, that are normally left on charge in the shed.
I've weighed up the risk that if there is a fire I lose all my bikes and tools, but nobody's life is in danger, and all the batteries are well made and used with the correct charger.

@ascentale @bikenite A6. Not yet. The batteries that came with the Cargo Quad were awful cheap shit batteries using Anderson connectors.

I never charged them when I was not nearby to do something. And it was hard to do in a crowded travel trailer, but I charged them as far away from papers or easy flammables as I could.

They quickly weren't holding a charge anymore. Replacements thru the manufacturer had the same problem. I ended up having to spend $$ getting custom batteries made. #BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite I haven't had a problem, but I intend to buy a timer for the charger so it can't charge forever.
@ascentale @bikenite The old Bosch PowerPack 400 died two times. The first we throw down to concrete and it stopped working. I was afraid to send it to get it repaired. Instead I bought a new one. Years later the new died during the loading after very heavy rain at 1 degree Celsius. I send to a repair service. The BMS got wet, died. It was changed. Battery worked until I sold the bike last year. So yes, I had issues, but always my fault and never related to fire.
@ascentale @bikenite A6: Some off-campus college student apartments burned down near me last fall because of one. The bike, with battery, was stored on a porch, which you are not supposed to do apparently? No casualties; complete loss of building & possessions. 😬 #BikeNite

@ascentale
A6: no issue here with the large Bosch batteries. I don't know anyone who had issues either although I read about the fire brigade warning about make shift battery fires
@bikenite

#BikeNite

@ascentale @bikenite A6: I've had a Tern HSD S+ for over 4 years with no electrical issues (including the battery). That's not to say the danger doesn't exist, but I believe well-designed batteries, such as ones by Bosch, are far less likely to catch fire than those manufactured by no-nome brands. #BikeNite

@bikenite @ascentale No, but my local bike shop requires that e-bike owners take their battery with them if they leave their bike for repairs. Insurance reasons due to fire risk. Probably overblown.

#BikeNite a6

@ascentale if this is about lithium batteries, I know a person who saw one such fire in person on the street; they were walking and a woman had her handbag erupt in fire spontaneously
