Is it possible that Microsoft Windows is not a very good computer program

@mcc It is pretty sad.

In 2015, Windows acknowledged a 30 Year Anniversary. After missteps with Windows 8, also announces Windows 10 being a free upgrade for all Windows Vista, 7 and 8 users.

The question: right now nobody will celebrate a 50th anniversary of Windows (the 40th was last November, did anyone notice), but with Microsoft renaming everything as CoPilot, will Windows even exist by then?

@Tock @mcc
I, for, one hope that Microsoft is a relic of the psst by then.
@Tock @mcc they certainly have deteriorated, is it not the case that copilot has been designated as "just for gaming" due to its abysmal quality?

"the only desktop that comes with a Russian STD" - Bill Gates's sad blue face

@mcc all things are possible, I suppose, in an infinite universe. 3.11 might have been OK, and there were rumours of POSIX compliance in one of the early NT based versions, though which one escapes me, just at the moment.

@hypostase @mcc

Reminder
Too big & too old to be a trustful thing:

1- The complexity of a program increases until it exceeds the capabilities of the teams responsible for its maintenance. (done since the beginning, a common thing with stolen stuffs)

2- A bug free program is an obsolete one.

- Murphy's Law -

@mcc if it has a dedicated screen for errors. Something called blue screen of death, it probably is not.
@mcc you mean it is not a good operating system. It was an open secret for a long time. The only good features in Windows are those they stole frol Linux.
@sasanb @mcc came here scrolling the replies to find this exact pedantry in action

@mcc 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

yes

@mcc I think it's spelled "copilot" these days
@mcc This is not a question it is a statement. It also happens to be true.
@mcc I'm going to go with, 'Yes'.
@mcc Not just possible, but probable.
@mcc I moved both laptops to Linux mint Nov & Dec 2025.
@honor2025 @mcc oh distro twins (i switched jan 2026 tho)
@nommiesav @mcc I read Linux is over 5% now - 1st time ever to be that high

@honor2025 @mcc 5% on what? like linux users make up 5% of something now?

either way i’d believe it, windows is seriously unusable now, especially if you actively do not want to use ai.

@honor2025 @mcc Been using linux for over 10 straight years. It is so much less crappy.
@skedarwarrior @mcc I wished I tried years ago.
I knew about it, but always feared I'd brick my PC

@mcc

Indeed, but I think that was a while ago
It's worse now

@mcc its been 25 years and files still get locked, forcing you to restart to release the lock, so you can delete or rename the file.

You decide.

@mahadevank @mcc Windows was born into a world that already had inodes, but it's damned if any of its filesystems will ever support such Unixian devilry

Impossible @mcc

Its rank power surpasses that of a mere one program, it must be *many* not very good computer programs

@mcc

If you give a room full of monkeys with typewriters 150k random DLLs, could they produce Windows 12 by accident?

@mcc it's an OS fit for raccoons halfway reaching into a juicy dumpster on a very hot and humid day, the stench radiating 10 metres in all directions like a punch in the face when it reaches one's nostrils

@mcc No. Pretty confident it indeed takes that many programs to be that terrible. You wouldn't be able to do it with just one. A raw kernel that boots up to nothing couldn't do anywhere near the same level of damage nor cause the same amount of frustration. Trying to integrate enough into one monolithic program would cause it to fail cascade too soon I think.

In other words, no...it's several and has to be.

@mcc

Copilot said no.

@mcc Windows 10 is probably the worst version in my experience. I recall windows XP and 2000 as the best ones. Windows Vista was also terrible.

@rsada @mcc well, after getting rid of the built-in spyware and ending all Windows updates, and refusing extended support,10 is finally stable. No more crashes since October 24th of last year.

Which is what a lot of us who didn't bother with extended support kind of expected to happen.

@rsada @mcc Think 10 is bad, look at how bad 11 is on bs hardware requirements alone...!
@mcc I do believe I’ve heard that before.
@mcc honestly Windows has fallen so far back in the last few years, I prefer ChromeOS or Fedora over it.
@mcc 🤔 I feel like we would have heard something about this before now
@mcc bless their hearts, they try their best.
@mcc It's just one program in the sea of many 'not very good' programs.

@mcc <insert 'never was' meme>

(or maybe 2.0 was? I just started my Windoze career with 3.0)

@[email protected]'rename win.exe linux.sh' was very helpful
@mcc on a scale from 1 (really bad) to 10 (really good), how likely bad is it? I haven't used it since 1997.
@mcc can't be. It's installed on nearly every computer so it must be good. Why would anyone use anything but the very best program.
@oblomov @mcc Yes, but as you well know, MS Apps and Google apps and Meta Apps also already there along with Windows OS when you buy a PC (or Android phone or Tablet for that matter, if it's an Apple PC or phone or Tablet then its their stuff instead). Because the company that makes the PC is bribed to put them there. And so people use the OS and there Apps because they know no better.
Sure, that’s possible — Windows is basically a pile of 512 kB memoirs that never learned how to clean up after themselves.
@mcc It can't be "not very good"...
It's a dreadfull, horrible crap. No less...

@mcc your asking the wrong question.

The right question is, is it possible windows is the worst OS in history due to being a giant black box.

@skedarwarrior @mcc Is it worse than TempleOS?

Yes. Yes it is.

@mcc
It is.

I went to see a good friend yesterday, I had to use his computer and I felt dirty using Windows 10.

💭...oh, wait, is it a flat square Windows logo ? That's Windows 11 😫😭...💭

💭...at least he has Firefox.💭

💭...oh, a taskbar ad 🤗😑 ?💭

I showed him Kubuntu on Distrosea.
I asked him if his computer worked well or was "muddy driving". I told him I could change his OS within 20 minutes with a spare USB key 😄.

Planning to put this pre-pandemic Acer on @fedora @kde 🥰.

@mcc i have thoughts about this. not complimentary ones.
@mcc Is it possible that smoking is not very good for health
