Aaron@siracusa the biggest disappointment about this is that Apple never did bother to solve their RAM ceiling problem in Apple Silicon Macs. I was hoping to see some clever solution that added slotted memory that had a direct connection to the rest of the SOC to be super fast and low latency.
Hell, I would have settled for a version that was architected like the Intel Mac Pro with slotted RAM and higher capacity at the cost of latency.
Instead Apple just didn't bother to try to solve it.

You could configure a Mac Pro with 1.5 TB of RAM in 2019.
And now it's easy to conceive of an AI-focused workload where you might want to run a large model that could easily blow past even 1.5 TB.
Apple's unified memory approach has a lot of advantages for most of its lineup, but the super high end is poorly served by this because of those limits (and now we can really overcome those limits by doubling up on SOCs which forces you to add CPU/GPU cores you might not need)

zed@zed I forget whether it was part of the 2019 WWDC keynote or in some supplemental materials released that same week but there were interviews with audio professionals who were delighted to finally be able to have Logic sessions where they could actually edit a full recording with dozens of different instruments on their own tracks, and this was something they were finally able to do because of the RAM levels. MKBHD discussed this when he reviewed the 2019 Mac Pro as well.

What I’ve heard about this is it’s based on older pro app architectures that didn’t stream files in very well from the disk. But that’s not really a limit anymore (both because of better designed apps and ever faster SSDs).
Agreed though it needs an actual test with empirical data. The only 1TB RAM single user use case I’m aware of is local SOTA AI.

Bart@siracusa Somewhere in Apple Park is an unopened package an intern neglected to deliver. In it, a t-shirt that could have inspired and made all the difference.
That said, they could backtrack today and announce an M5 Ultra mac pro with upgradable GPU and RAM and I would know 0 people that would buy one. I think it's an important product to have existed but market reality has spoken. As nice as it is, the negative ROI on that case design is probably second only to project titan.

@siracusa Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Seriously, though, one of my most exciting Apple-related experiences was when UPS delivered my Graphite G4 Mac Pro and accompanying 15” LCD Studio Display back in ‘99. I felt like a kid again on Christmas morning.

This is not that surprising but really sad. I think Apple will be more of a portables company (ofc not entirely) because that’s where Apple Silicon and their strength shine. But really wished they kept innovating in the high-end desktop space.

Mark Grambau@siracusa Actual Mac Pro news aside, is it just my eyes or does seeing this photo on one’s phone and jiggling the device even a millimeter induce a parallax effect? An accidental optical illusion with Ternus appearing to move independently of the background like a “special scene.” I downloaded and inspected the image because at first I thought you’d posted a GIF that subtly jiggled, like 3 video frames looping.

Ted August@siracusa so sad. You were the first person I thought of when I read the news. Gut feeling is something Mac Pro-like will be introduced in the future. This story has more chapters to be written.
