So my sister is a zookeeper and takes care of the birds. She often sends pictures.
This is Baked Beans. He is a baby screech owl and is being raised for the zoo's ambassador bird program.
I would die for Beans.

Also keep an eye out for other fun bird posts. The zoo also has a wonderful Tawny Frogmouth that I adore, and a baby flamingo that goes on walks around the zoo.

Well, someone opened the refrigerator near Beans. This is his disgruntled face.
Ruffled is a good word here.
This is one of the earliest Beans pictures. He itty! He bitty! He covered in baby fluff!
Look at that little round boi. If you zoom in, he is rockin that 'stache
Baby owls, not always cute. Sometimes, they look like death warmed over, right after waking up but before the coffee is ready.
My sister calls this his "mouldy strawberry" phase.

My friends, as it is Superb Owl day, I would like to show a more recent picture of Baked Beans, taken back in January. He now has his adult plumage and is quite majestic, particularly since he's all sticky-uppy. He was being taken past the gorilla play room and did not like the gorillas.

There are 2 baby penguins who are staying in a pen in the hall. They're also going to be ambassador birds, so all the keepers are encouraged to pick them up and cuddle them multiple times a day to get them used to people.

In reality, Baked Beans had just refused a mist shower (something birds often like) and instead decided to jump into the water bowl after the keepers left.

He is not, in fact an owl. He is from Australia and is a type of nightjar, a family shared by whippoorwills.
I adore tawny frogmouths. They look like Muppets. When they're not doing anything and want you to mind your own business, that act like a vertical log. And are very good at it.

Joanna Holman@Artemis201 Tawny Frogmouths are the greatest. I have a few families of them in my neighborhood and have loved watching the chicks grow up. Can be tricky to find them though because they hide in trees that match their feathers. Here is some of my local ones
