For once, in an article looking at alternatives to Big Tech the Guardian has acknowledge (and indeed given a half a paragraph to) Mastodon....

Its not the greatest write up but might encourage some more people to join us...

Leave big tech behind! How to replace Amazon, Google, X, Meta, Apple โ€“ and more

A handful of companies monopolise the web, with unprecedented access to our data. But there are many more ethical โ€“ and often distinctively European โ€“ alternatives

The Guardian
@ChrisMayLA6 Greens and Mastodon in the Press, the New World is finally arriving! ๐Ÿ˜‰
@ChrisMayLA6 Not a bad writeup, but the Grauniad still gives more room to nonexistent vapourware like W.

@BashStKid

well as always, its press release dependent reporting to see extent

@ChrisMayLA6 ping @CrispinHughes
(Mastodon, Ecosia and Firefox in place - got in a tangle with Proton a while back, will look at GreenNet. Oh, and #boycottAmazon, ffs)

@ChrisMayLA6 Glad to see the mention of #LibreOffice, which I've been using ever since it came out.

One doesn't need to pay a subscription for a decent office suite.

#opensource

@ChrisMayLA6 PS: The Grauniad is still drinking the #AI kool-aid though. :(
@ChrisMayLA6 I had a chat with a friend yesterday @Lizcable who has been quiet on here ..but we are looking at developing something to make it easier for non techy folk to use Mastodon and get off the bad places. I met her via an excellent 12 Days of Twitter course she developed many years ago and we've been trying to do something together ever since but feels like it is time.. so Month of Mastodon coming soon... when we have time and headspace to meet and hatch plans!

@stuffjolikes @Lizcable

Keep me in the loop - a 12 days of (to?) Mastodon would be great.... especially if got some traction on LinkedIn where lots of ex-X folk now seem to be posted more frequently

It's nice to see an article of this sort, and even better to see e/os mentioned as an alternative smartphone option, but disappointing to see no mention of linux or beos as alternatives for Windoze and Apple.

@ChrisMayLA6 @urlyman A real pity that they chose to not link to Mastodon (or Bluesky), but did link to W, which doesnโ€™t even exist yet.

Otherwise quite a good article, a really fast overview of options for people who arenโ€™t already thinking about and researching alternatives. Very shareable.

@ChrisMayLA6 "any phone can be fully de-Googled with the /e/OS/ operating system"... really? If only that were even a little bit true.

@ChrisMayLA6 Thanks for sharing - article not to bad see also https://european-alternatives.eu/ for other #opensource ideas.

Indeed as some commentators said no alternative mentioned to Wi or Ap OS

Deleted my X account after the Nazi greeting of EM - tried BlSk but finally choose Mastodon. Switched m 8 year old Yoga laptop from Wi 11pro to Linux Mint after they released the latest update 22.3 = fun back into computing. There is so much assistance to make the switch - regret should have done it earlier..

@ChrisMayLA6
I read the article and that's why I am here! Blundering my way around, admittedly, but getting there slowly!

@Gina_Gemini

welcome.... its a great place; the key to it all is the hashtag - get your hear round that & you'll be up & running.....

@ChrisMayLA6 nice article! I'm already using Minstral and proton mail, they work really fine, but I would like to do more. Someone has experience with fairphone?

@ChrisMayLA6 there's quite a cognitive dissonance headlining "how to leave big tech behind" then placing a special button below it to encourage more use of Google. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Of course this is the editor's failure, not the writer's

@ChrisMayLA6

Now we need a similar article for consumers in the U.S., who want emancipation from Big Tech (especially cell phones).

Any suggestions?

@Brentguernsey

There is in the thread a more US-focussed article I think....

@ChrisMayLA6 this is wonderful thank you for posting. Iโ€™m here in the US and have switched over to Proton Mail & Vivaldi for a browser. I do find Vivaldi a bit overwhelming, but I feel so much safer on it. I donโ€™t know how much of the other technology phones, etc. would work here in the US. Amazon is a monster I try to avoid. I use Book Shop and Libro.fm for audio. What we have now is extraction capitalism. Iโ€™ve heard of a social media called UpScrolled but havenโ€™t tried
