@BuyFromEU
Would love to. How can I migrate to new device and buy apps on my phone without #Google?

Remember when #Microsoft got fined about only pushing one browser? Well, we are few years late with android lock-ins

@schmaker @BuyFromEU DeGoogled Phones exist ! Try @e_mydata (open source, privacy-enabled smartphone operating system). Works fine with @fairphone / @murena ... and maybe your own phone !

Avec la tendance croissante à dégoogliser, les fabricants de téléphones européens deviennent des alternatives populaires. Examinons les cinq premiers dans cette revue.

Tuta

@chicraote
I know they are on the market. 2 problems for me:
1. None of them has physical qwerty
2. Lot of apps do not work without gapps

Somehow I still do think #EU can do much more in this area. When IT company can get fined for pushing their own browser (which can be easily replaced), then locked in backup methods should also be penalised
@e_mydata @murena @fairphone @BuyFromEU

@schmaker @e_mydata @murena @chicraote @fairphone @BuyFromEU

You could jailbreak your phone. I'm too afraid to do mine but that's a solution.

@Beldarak
I often do, but some phones cannot be hacked and my last one worked horrible with custom fw
@e_mydata @murena @chicraote @fairphone @BuyFromEU

@schmaker @e_mydata @murena @chicraote @fairphone @BuyFromEU

I'll probably buy a pre-jailed one next time I think

@chicraote de-googled phones exist, but you still can't buy apps without a google identity and this makes a de-googled phone substantially less useful.

@schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena

@graydon @schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena This is not true : you can install most apps with Aurora Store (Google Play alternative) in anonymous mode. I closed my Google account years ago and I can install almost all the apps available on Google Play... Thank you @e_mydata and #aurora
https://auroraoss.com/
Aurora

Aurora OSS - Abode of opensource android apps

@e_mydata @murena @graydon @chicraote @BuyFromEU I'd say you misunderstood. You can install apps, but you can't buy them

@chicraote I own and use a e/OS phone. I am not making theoretical statements.

I did not say "install". I said "buy". You cannot buy squeak without a google identity.

If I want the paid version of Flowx (an excellent weather app with real costs to talk to real servers with the weather data), I can't have it without a google identity. If I want the paid version of RealCal or GitSync, I can't have it without a google identity. Et multi cetera.

@schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena

@graydon @schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena I understand, I wasn't aware of that. We've put too much power in the hands of Google Play and Apple App Store... How can we regain control ?

@chicraote I would prefer a system where there's "postal banking", strictly public banking services, and a phone to be legal for sale must support use of the postal bank for monetary transactions through which means you must be able to make any transaction you can make by any other means for no greater real cost than incurred by other means than using the postal bank.

(It's not obvious that for-profit banking is itself a tolerable situation.)

@schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena

@chicraote
I think a good counter-measure would be to publish apps that are strictly available OUTSIDE these app stores. No matter if paid or free.
And if paid, then strictly with non monopoly controlled payment methods.
@graydon @chicraote @schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena
Revolut banking & An Post Banking not on Web. Only approved phones running Android or iOS.

@raymaccarthy Yup. And that's difficult to distinguish from a de facto law requiring you to have a duopoly phone.

Which is not an appropriate stance for the public square which really ought to include "banking".

@chicraote @schmaker @BuyFromEU @e_mydata @fairphone @murena

@chicraote I run a Murena phone because I'm sick of US spy tech, but none of my UK bank apps work on it because banks class the phone as 'insecure'. It's a colossal pain.
@schmaker @BuyFromEU I'm using Fennec (Firefox) on LineageOS with F-Droid installed. You can do something like that.

@bufalo1973 @BuyFromEU I do IronFox with Aurora and F-Droid .. stock android, unflashable phone.

Yet, migrating between devices is pain in the ass...

>> Remember when #Microsoft got fined about only pushing one browser? Well, we are few years late with #Google #android lock-ins

No surprises here, as some of the same people moved from Microsoft to Google and started playing the same dirty tricks that got Microsoft busted in the first place

@BuyFromEU Ecosia uses Bing and Google anyway soo....
Qwant and Ecosia are creating an independent European search index together though.

@BuyFromEU

Not only Google, but did you ever try to pry your friends away from Facebook? GOOD LUCK with that one too.

@Savvyhomestead @BuyFromEU

Yes another one is WhatsApp... Try to convince folk to use Signal instead....
And meanwhile TV companies/the Government etc etc use WhatsApp/Twitter etc etc

@BuyFromEU Yes! Me! On it! I installed Waterfox, but now unsure. Should I not use Ecosia anymore? As it does data harvesting and that's one of the reasons - I just don't want that. Better for the environment, better for my speed of use.

Transitioning to Mastodon and Pixelfed, away from Spotify, partly YT still, I did install PeerTube but contentwise it is lacking for now, on SoundCloud and BandCamp trying to get people to use/come there.

#FOSS

Thinking bout Android > Fdroid etc

@BuyFromEU EU not spying is nationalist propaganda
@BuyFromEU every fucking thing is pushing towards using google or apple shit for everything. I've made some lucky choices in the past and can do my banking and shopping and EV charging on my Linux phone (Fairphone 5, PostmarketOS). But things like parking and most charging operators and I guess most public transport expect you to carry either of those two spies in your pocket all the time.

A two panel cartoon.

Panel 1: A man asks, "Who hates being spied on?", and everyone raises their hand.

Panel 2: The man asks, "Who will stop using Google?", and everyone lowers their hand.

@BuyFromEU

Use Brave and DuckDuckGo...

@Pettet8 @BuyFromEU Brave is basically Chromium (Blink) which is still contaminated with Google. Only options are Gecko based browsers like Firefox (better Waterfox or Librewolf)

@BuyFromEU

Or just pay for, and use #kagi

@BenHM3 @BuyFromEU FYI kagi pays to russia

@asci @BuyFromEU

Could you explain, please?

@BenHM3 @BuyFromEU kagi pays russian search engine yandex for search results https://kagifeedback.org/d/5445-reconsider-yandex-integration-due-to-the-geopolitical-status-quo/18 quote from kagi CEO
Reconsider Yandex integration due to the geopolitical status quo - Kagi Feedback

ve been a very happy Kagi user since an early stage. t want to contribute in any sense to Russian irredentism and war...

@asci @BuyFromEU

So $0.02 of my monthly goes to RU (that we know of.) Low concern, but I'm looking into putting SearXNG on my home server. Thank you for alerting me and making me discover an alternative.

I'll point out the reason I'll leave #Kagi in March isn't the RU/Yandex thing.

It's the direct gaslighting of us customers in Vlad's reply.

It is EXACTLY the correct way to run a company by responding to customer concerns.

Too Musk-y for me, fuck right off Vlad.

@BuyFromEU my biggest hurdle is email (sad face as in 2nd pic)
@BuyFromEU @Joy_intl that was an easy one for me. Got a paid Proton email, set my Google email to forward everything to my new email address and just gradually changed my address to the new one. No missing correspondence and no need to do it all at once ☺️👌🏻
@BuyFromEU Oppose Chat Control in the EU parliament whilst you're at it.

@BuyFromEU

Try edit today, add an #Alttext 🙃

@BuyFromEU Ecosia and Qwant also like to spy, throwing AI and ads on us, just with a european label. Anything being european does not make it a good product.
@BuyFromEU I've been using DuckDuckGo for some time now.

@BuyFromEU The sad fact is that an average consumer will always use what's easy to get into, not what's morally or technically superior.

We are not selling this idea for technology enthusiasts who already understand the problem, but to a person who has absolutely no idea what these services even do technically, they're just the bright colored icon that let you do various things.

Then there's the whole matter of selling the idea that it's not good if you're being spied upon. My mom is a good example. She has various services on her tabled and she uses them daily, but she just won't understand what's bad about if a technology giant analyses all her communications. She will never be able to comprehend the core issue because it's all space magic when explained even with layman's terms.

Yet my mom is exactly the type that the campaigns to switch to European and trustworthy companies should be aimed for. It's however a tough sale to say she should start paying for them.

@BuyFromEU @claushc After considerable effort I have now cancelled all Google subscriptions and payments. The migration were a bitch.
@BuyFromEU I use Qwant for a while. But man, it is just barebones search, super limited, no new features in past 6 months, such a missed opportunity
@asci @BuyFromEU not sure what features you miss. Image search for sure is missing. But beside that I don't see the fuzz. It gives you the results you want from sites we trust?
@joyider @BuyFromEU the biggest issue for now is maps. It is almost impossible to find local businesses. Also some product search would be nice
@asci @BuyFromEU point taken 😀 just hope they fix the issue of payment. Since I hope they don't promote the biggest wallet over best product

@joyider

My biggest trouble is the AFAICT non-existent feature to filter results by dates or timeframes as per *my* needs:
The filter options given (last 24 hrs/last week/last month) are underwhelmingly limited.

Same (or worse) with Ecosia.

If there's a workaround I've missed, I'd be thankful to learn about it, TIA!

@asci @BuyFromEU

Disgusting but true. Most people are weak.
@BuyFromEU I prefer using non corporate options, like Searx or Startpage. Ecosia is using Bing and heavily greenwashing their usage, while Qwant has a track record of showing content that pays well, like tabloids.
@BuyFromEU Waiting for the EU to support a competing Op System for a cell phone standard as powerfully regulated as the Swift banking system and as safe and interesting as shopping in Taipei. The US monopolies need to be broken up or utility-regulated for their own sake.
