#crypto #cryptocurrency #monero #xmr  for the people who use monero for donations etc. i have a few questions

- how to deal with xmr varying in price? just buy whenever needed?
- how harmful is monero compared to other PoW cryptocurrencies like bitcoin?
- is monero ethical?

(EDIT) everyone bringing up un-CWed sensitive and/or unwanted topics plEAse use content warnings. please

@JuxGD those are some good questions re: #Monero.

1. Obviously #XMR doesn't fluctuate extremely hard (it does have some peaks, but for the most part, it's pretty stable)

2. #Monero is in fact less harmful than all the other #Shitcoins by virtue of being anti-ASIC and running best on consumer devices.

3. All #capitalism is #unethical, but Monero being the closest to #DigitalCash makes it better than any #Shitcoin and allows #Sexworkers and others #discriminated and #debanked to recieve money.

@F3715H @JuxGD I second this one.

1. Obviously #Monero peaked recently because everyone who can is dropping #USD for #XMR and is #GTFO'ing the #USA due to #Trump...

2.I've seen "#ProofOfStake" #Shitcoins like #Ethereum and #Solana with setups that are way more wasteful, expensive and #hoarding of hardware like #RAM and #SSDs [the latter one being basically destroyed due to extreme #IOPS].

3.If you have no problem with #AMEX, #VISA, #MasterCard ¹ (and espechally #PayPal!)² ³, then you shouldn't have a problem with Monero either!

  • Yes it is a #cryptocurrency, but it's the "least worst" when it comes to #privacy, #centralization and some study seem to hint that Monero and the DNMs that use it actually reduce #StreetCrime and #Violence as they allow #NonviolentDrugOffenders [aka. #VictimlessCrimes] to be facilitated safer and in a trustless envoirment.

  • The Problems associated with #Monero are not due to the fault of Monero. It's what people do towards other people. Whether they do it for XMR, #Dollar, #Euro, or whatever doesn't make it better or worse than whether someone threatens a person with a knife or a rifle: Both are equally bad in the eyes of the law and society for all the righr reasons!

Also Monero per it's very design CANNOT be abused for "#SmartContracts", #NFTs and associated #malware - in fact the #developers of Monero removed any such ability by deprecating and disabling the tx_extra feature.

@kkarhan @JuxGD also there are convenient means to acquire and sell XMR anonymously...

Like OpenMonero...

@F3715H @JuxGD Personally, I consider it the least worst #Cryptocurrency or rather the best that actually exists...

But don't take my word for it. Others say the same ...

Latte macchiato :blobcoffee: :ablobcat_longlong: (@privateger)

@JuxGD buy it when you need it, lets you avoid price fluctuation :thumbsupcat: it's PoW, so it's not great but also not terrible. it's using RandomX rather than the common algorithms like SHA, so there are no supermassive ASIC mining farms using 36978 gigawatts for it either. it only runs efficiently on real CPUs a privacy chain that only does transactions at least cant be used as a vehicle for web3 nft smart contract bs, if that makes it ethical or not really depends on your personal opinion RE: #crypto #cryptocurrency #monero #xmr :boosts_ok_gay: for the people who use monero for donations etc. i have a few questions :boosts_ok_gay: :neofox_heart: - how to deal with xmr varying in price? just buy whenever needed? - how harmful is monero compared to other PoW cryptocurrencies like bitcoin? - is monero ethical?

Huh!? @kkarhan the links you offered don't even mention #Taler.

In any case, Taler is available already for the Swiss Franc, see https://taler-ops.ch

Shopping with eCHF using GNU Taler

This page lists merchants accepting GNU Taler payments in Switzerland.

@oec @F3715H @JuxGD I've yet to see or hear of any place that actually accepts #GNUtaler.

@kkarhan @F3715H @JuxGD

Fair enough. Our folks are onboarding various shops and restaurants in Biel right now, announcements will be made soon.

@oec @F3715H @JuxGD let me know once it's having actual convenience compared to a #ec card & #cash

@kkarhan @F3715H @JuxGD

Re: convenience, Taler already has proven it during various events as payment system for event currency. Here is a good summary of that (in German): https://media.ccc.de/v/39c3-von-groschen-und-spurlos-gnu-taler-auch-auf-eurem-event

Von Groschen und SpurLos - GNU Taler auch auf eurem Event!

media.ccc.de

@oec @F3715H @JuxGD that's just digital casino chips and vouchers with extra steps...

  • Might just buy/rent a #FeliCa prepaid card system (or similar).

That's not a #currency, that's merely a #prepaid payment system!

  • Just more inconvenient than a #debit #CreditCard because it's not being accepted off-venue!

    • By that definition #CruiseShips like #AIDA that use their own #cashless cards for on-board payments have "spearheaded" that innovation ages ago.

So yeah, #GNUtaler doesn't even remotely compare with #Monero and everyone in denial of that can please kindly fuck off until that shit is actually listed on reputable and/or decentralized exchanges as well as swap services, cuz it's fungibility is on-par with casino chips!

@kkarhan @F3715H @JuxGD

Correct, #Taler is a payment system, not a currency. It provides anonymity for buyers while ensuring accountability of sellers.

@oec @F3715H @JuxGD you can have the same with #Monero, including manupulation-proof #Accountng thanks to "#ViewKeys", so even #tax authorities have proven transparency without custody - as they are accustomed from traditional #banks!

  • Plus you don't run into the regulatory hurdle of potentially running an unlicensed and thus illegal bank by accepting #Deposits!

Thanks for the link.

Two observations:

  • I wouldn't call the optional (in the sense that an account owner doesn't need to cooperate) "viewkey" feature of Monero the "same" as the taxability guarantee in Taler, but it indeed would allow an honest merchant to disclose taxable income.

  • But according to https://www.getmonero.org/resources/moneropedia/viewkey.html, the data available for viewkey is not even reliable:

  • ... However, outgoing transactions cannot be reliably viewed as of June 2017. Therefore, the balance of a Monero address as shown via a viewkey should not be relied upon.

    Anyhow, as for comparison of #Taler and #Monero, I just say this: People (and societies) have options to choose¹) from for anonymous-for-buyers payments. With respect to taxability I'd argue that the regulatory compliance and guarantees are stronger it Taler, which - I think - is more preferable for society, but your mileage might vary.

    ¹) Of course, when and where the more challenged by regulatory #Taler becomes available.

    Moneropedia: View Key

    on Moneropedia, the open encyclopedia of Monero knowledge

    getmonero.org, The Monero Project
    @oec @kkarhan @F3715H @JuxGD should point out that the new version of viewkeys, coming soon to the Monero network, is completely reliable.

    @hyc @kkarhan @F3715H @JuxGD

    Interesting. Can you elaborate on why it is unreliable right now? Is this a design problem or an implementation issue? Will the reliability be a stable invariant (by design) moving forward?

    @oec @hyc @JuxGD I've not heard of any issues re: ViewKeys, because that would really curveball the whole reason to have these in the first place!

    • They exist as means to check transactions and balances without having the authority to commit transactions - something every accounting system I know wants, espechally when it comes to taxes & bookkeeping compliance.

    @oec @kkarhan @JuxGD in the original Monero (actually CryptoNote) design, viewkeys can only see incoming transactions. Outgoing transactions can be deduced from seeing incoming change returned from those spends, but if a spend is exact, with no change returned, then it can't be determined.

    In the upcoming Monero design, viewkeys are explicitly able to see both incoming and outgoing transactions, so auditors can see the exact balance of an account.

    @oec @kkarhan @JuxGD the new design has been running successfully on a testnet for several months already. Production / mainnet release is imminent.

    @hyc @oec @JuxGD so basically the Problem got fixed for good.

    • That's excellent to hear!
