Q3. What's something on your bike that's broken and that you haven't bothered to repair because it's too difficult / expensive, or not important enough to you?

@bikenite A3. My main commuter bike is also kind of a beater bike now in that it doesn't go very fast but I don't have to worry about it too much. As such it has some broken fenders and the brake cables need replacing. There's too much friction when pulling the levers. Also it drops its chain frequently because of some chainline issues and I can't figure out how to put a working chain guard onto it. That's probably the biggest problem right now.
The fenders still function ok, so though I've already purchased a replacement, I haven't installed them yet. That and I made custom rain/mudflaps for it and the new fenders don't have the same mount point for mudflaps.
A3 I have a #Dahon Speed TR with a broken hinge that I cannot repair because the sole US distributor retired and closed his business many years ago.
@ascentale @bikenite A3: the rear mudguard on my cargo bike is probably the most obvious. It's too small for the wheel, the back end is broken, but it works. I'm not buying a new one just because the free one isn't quite right.
Motto: I'm an athlete not an aesthete :)
@ascentale @bikenite #BikeNite A3. Nothing on my 2 bicycles is broken, because I am a former bike shop mechanic. I've been car-free over 4 yrs; my bikes must work.
I suppose you could maybe say the rear hub on my fitness bike, which is about 33-34 years old. It ran out of grease last year, because the seal isn't as tight as it really should be.
I'm not replacing the hub, even though the races are a little damaged. I cleaned and repacked them, and will monitor and maintain them, as needed.
@gcvsa
fwiw
i've a rear hub in a wheel I refused to give up on with neglected bearings for so long I damaged the races.
repacked, they felt like indexed shifters :)
one spring, took it apart, cleaned up, & repacked, not with grease, but with valve lapping compound, spun the axle with a drill motor, rinse, repeat, ending on polishing compound.
destroyed a few sets of balls, but ended up with a nicely smooth hub, which I still use.
@cpm @ascentale @bikenite That'll do it! In my case, it was/is an early 1990s Shimano 200GS hub (Second-lowest end groupset? I think there's a 100GS? I have an old catalogue around here somewhere on my hard drive.).
Not anything worth repairing, and the races were only lightly damaged, so I just disassembled everything, cleaned it all thoroughly, repacked with generic lithium grease, and reassembled, noting that the seals...well, didn't so much seal...but the wheel turns smoothly enough.
A3. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong just yet pending a look by the bike shop, but my REI Gen E 1.1 e-bike sometimes loses power and I have to reboot the bike computer to reset it. It might be a torque sensor? The power to the lights and the display is fine so I don't think it's a battery glitch.
(This is not the bike with winter tires on it, so if it ends up taking a little while to figure out that's OK by me.)
@FeloniousPunk
pretty sure deore stuff is pretty happy with sram cassettes, or microshift for that matter, the freehub spines were the same for very many years.
@FeloniousPunk
hmmm
dunno about an 'adapter', as such
but a shimano-compatible freehub might be available
is this an eagle?
that 1x12sp sram stuff that's not compatible with anything
fell down the sram/shim 11sp rabbithole,me
12sp is more cut&dry,11sp otoh, has lots of works/doesn't work, mnt:road-isms to it
what hub:freehub are you running?
our good folks at Mavic (writ large), being neither fish, flesh, nor good red herring, , ,
*should* (fsvo) have a freehub for that hub that will accept a shimano cassette
Gosh,
I wish I could be of more help.
But
All the best.

@ascentale @bikenite A3 my derailer is slightly out of alignment and causes my shifting to jump whenever I'm in top gear, but only when pedal assist is on.
Since I usually cruise in 7th gear, I haven't bothered to fix it.
@yantor3d @ascentale @bikenite A3. I also have an issue with gears, my 4th gear (out of 7) is skipping. I found a YouTube video that makes it seem like an easy thing to try and fix on my own, so I figured I'd give it a go and even got a bicycle repair stand. Haven't gotten around to it yet. I figure if I can't fix it or if I make it worse, I can then bring it to a shop.
Here's the video for tuning the derailleur that inspired me.
@ascentale @bikenite A3. Not the current main bike, but my old Novarra Buzz had a 2nd chainring (of 3) that wasn't the weird proprietary Truvativ shit so I had to file two of the bolt tabs down a bit to fit AND it was missing a little bump out so it just barely fit the chain between itself and the big ring. Rode like that for years before I got a new, proper ring.
A3. Nothing now, but took me almost a year to get my fenders replaced after they were torn up by my new studded tires.
@rand
we now call 26"
either of the following:
TwentySixer
or
Two-Sixer
so that the 'I must have N+1 NewStuff! All the time!'
folks will rediscover the utterly masterful ideal-for-all-time 90% perfect wheelsize again.
@luis_in_brief @dr2chase @ascentale @bikenite
It's not impossible but it is difficult and takes a lot of time and even more planning.
The below is a black cross bike wrapped in 3M automotive vinyl.
@ascentale @bikenite Ah, also, I need to get new spokes for the rear wheel on the larger, older cargo bike (a Big Dummy). So many miles that the spokes have worn little dents in each other, and with a heavy load on the rear the wheel makes the weird unsettling frinkling sort of a noise as the spokes shift on those spots.

@dr2chase
oh!
that's too perfect!
I don't think you could lock the contrast with the shed better if you tried!
Keep that colour!
#BikeNite A3: The indexed shifters are mis-aligned. Shifting up, nothing happens between 4 and 5, then 6 thumps and skips before it catches. Shifting down I have to click the index, then apply light pressure past the index point for the chain to actually move gears. Also, the little windows that show the gear numbers are cracked and brittle from the sun, so I can't tell what gear I'm in anyway.
But I'm used to it, so it all works for me.
Oh, and my bike seat is held together with layers of gaffer tape. I have a spare saddle in my box of bike parts, but the tape has held up remarkably well and isn't uncomfortable to ride on either. Probably won't get around to replacing the seat until next year.

@ascentale
A3: I keep all my bikes in perfect running order. I use one of those apps that count the mileage of each component (chain, break pads ...) so a can check them on regular intervals.
I prefer checking early rather than using them beyond point where more needs changing
@bikenite
I've not seen those apps. Sounds interesting. Can you share what you use please? #BikeNite
