This account was created in 2024 and I only started using it now because I was bored with mainstream social media. Is there anyone I can make friends with here? Oh, by the way, I'm a bass player and I'm from Indonesia.

@vianxonata
Mastodon operates mostly on hashtags (which you can follow!) so #bass is a place to start! (There's also #gearsquad, which gets some traction.)

There are lots of indie musicians on Mastodon as well: I can't claim to know where they all hang out, but following @etherdiver should get you started.

@geoffduncan @vianxonata @etherdiver do you know of a hashtag for acoustic guitar singer-songer writers?
@gardengnome666 @geoffduncan @vianxonata I've used #SingerSongwriter in the past, but not sure how well used it is
@gardengnome666 @vianxonata @etherdiver
Also just plain #SongWriter, although most of what I see there (and #SingerSongwriter) is promotional material rather than discussion/talk. However, interesting people do show up!
I use #songwriting when I'm venting about the process! haha

@vianxonata @donray Mastodon is full of interesting and friendly people who you might find by searching hashtags related to things that interest you - #bassguitar isn’t used much but #indonesia is.

The best advice I can give is just be yourself and be brave and chat to people who seem interesting. As everyone will tell you, there’s no algorithm here so you have to find your own people. Good luck!

@vianxonata
I would suggest following @dgar . I would also suggest following a few of the music hashtags like #music . Unlike other services your timeline is not curated, instead it is the people and concepts you choose to follow, as well as the occasional reply to people and concepts you follow.

Anyway, dgar is a musician with a fun bunch of musical followers.

Another one I recommend is @WrenArcher . She is not a musician as far as I know, but she has turned me on to some other musicians

@nikatjef
Thanks for the shoutout James.
I am an amateur musician, singer/songwriter but don't post much about it.

@MamaLake is someone on my instance who comes to mind. I know she has another account but not sure if she's still active there. If I remember right she is a musician and artist, an American but now lives in Thailand with her partner. Is that right, Jenica?

And here's another tip for you about Mastodon, Vian. In the search tab look for hashtags of subjects that interest you and follow those. Your home feed will fill up nicely. Then, as you see interesting toots, interact and follow cool people you come across.
Jope this helps.

@vianxonata @dgar

@WrenArcher @nikatjef @vianxonata @dgar hi vian, welcome back! And thanks for the shout out Wren. Everything you said is true. I have three active accounts including this one, @MamaLake and @Mamalake just cause I like talking about different things on different channels. I would recommend following #ThursdayFiveList and #FridayNightJukebox for some music fun.

@vianxonata

I've been here since 2023. I am here mostly to promote my alternative democracy.

I played guitar for 15 years. But I wasn't very good.

@vianxonata welcome back to the party! You have to manually do stuff here , there's no algorithm finding stuff for you! I recommend commenting and following people who write interesting things on the global timeline (you can always unfollow if you don't like them)
And also you can search and post using #hashtags

Like maybe you could do an introduction post and say you're a #bassplayer #musician so other bass players might be able to find you.

@vianxonata I've had mine since around late 2023, firstly using it as a feed for architecture-related stuff, including news, back when I was attending in my hometown state university, but now, mostly language- and nature-related stuff, though I sometimes post about my creative ramblings.
Glad to see you rise from dormancy in the smol Fediverse, a fellow (though more than amateur) musician speaking!
I play bass! My profile picture is my bass face!

Like others said, search and follow hashtags and you'll find people to follow and your timeline will fill up pretty soon with interesting stuff.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services also has great tips for mastodon/fediverse. You can follow their account and also check out their website https://fedi.tips/

edit: your post showed up in my (and probably some of the other commenters) timeline because of the #bass hashtag

Welcome to the #Fediverse!

As a first guide to all of this I like to recommend https://fedi.tips/.

One of the best features: You can follow hashtags, so #BassMusic and #Indonesia might be interesting for you to use and follow.

@vianxonata hello πŸ‘‹πŸ½
@vianxonata Selamat pagi~ There's a whole instance full of Indonesians at misskey.id, you could look at their timeline to see if there's some interesting people around. Generally the best way to find new people is to be on something other than Mastodon, and check the federated timeline once in a while.

@vianxonata

I'll buy you a beer mate when you're in Adelaide.

Perhaps try the Fediverse musicians directory linked below:

@vianxonata
Wanted to suggest looking in to suitable #starterpacks. But not sure it's an established thing on the fediverse yet & couldn't find a solid source. Maybe still worth checking in to?
I found this: https://fedidevs.com/starter-packs/

I think I saw a different one, but similar before. Or maybe that's the same one and it's just been a while.

@vianxonata Don’t fret. You’ll soon find plenty of people to connect with here πŸ˜€πŸŽΆβ€οΈ

(First sentence inspired by the photo on your profile 🀣)

@uxmark @vianxonata β€˜Fret’. Nice.
@vianxonata There's quite a few folks on the Fedi from/living in #Indonesia. I search/follow hashtags to find folks with similar interests here.
@vianxonata I boost for you. Good luck
