@fullfathomfive Good decorum prevents me from repeating what #whoopigoldberg once said of our national treasure. It’s probably the funniest thing anyone’s said about it. I still laugh when I think of it 😆
You can look it up if you like.

@fullfathomfive I like Vegemite. It's WAAAAY better than the shite they sell as marmite!
@fullfathomfive Hmmm ... pretty sure I've bought Marmite in Canada (altho' it was years ago), so wondering what's different about Vegemite...
@PeterLudemann @fullfathomfive
Vegemite is fortified with vitamin B and folic acid, and Canada's food regulations are really picky about that so Vegemite is not technically legal to sell as human food here. It's a silly edge case on a mostly reasonable law.

@silvermoon82 @fullfathomfive
It seems that Marmite was also treated similarly to Vegemite in Canada: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite#Canada

Presumably, years ago when I bought Marmite, such rules weren't in place yet.

BTW, the Japanese love/hate "something you have to have grown up with to like; but it's really good for you" is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natt%C5%8D

Marmite - Wikipedia

@fullfathomfive There was a bit of an outcry a couple of decades ago about Marmite in Denmark. In wanting to check my facts I came across this gem

“Marmite can be stored at room temperature and won't decompose, even after years. The spread loses none of its pungency, but it can dry out.”

From

https://www.ibtimes.com/whats-really-marmite-and-why-it-banned-644308

What's really in Marmite and why is it banned?

What is in the sandwich-spread Marmite that has the Danish government cracking down its sale?

@fullfathomfive

Maybe that could become the brand motto.

@number6 @fullfathomfive to be fair that seems like a compliment *for* anything from the natural world in Australia 😁
@fullfathomfive I laughed my socks off...so true
@fullfathomfive @dyckron I’m one of those sickos who likes marmite, so presumably I’d like vegemite? The way this is being treated like it’s nuclear waste is hilarious.
@andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron I really like Vegemite, but detest Marmite. It seems that it's just personal taste. People like what they like. 😊
@Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron Now I really have to try it.
@andymoose @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive all this talk, I'll have to order some from the bad place (Amazon) just to try some!

Whenever a sufficient number of Kiwis and/or Australians gather together in any online situation, only a finite amount of time can pass before the discussion inevitably turns into a Vegemite vs Marmite crusade.

Opinions are always polarised.

Which is silly, because Vegemite is obviously the winner.

@andymoose @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron

@BobLefridge @andymoose @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron you're kidding. you mean this is even a point of discussion these days? this argument was put to bed a century or more ago. marmite? ugh.
@BobLefridge @andymoose @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron if you are going to experiment with Vegemite, go easy only use a light smear on heavily buttered toast. Pair it with either a fresh orange juice or choc milk ( Milo is best)
@Maddogeco @BobLefridge @andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron Milo is great, especially paired with Tim Tams. I haven't seen Tim Tams in years. (Living in the US)
Bite off the opposite corners, use the cookie as a straw for the Milo, and pop it in the mouth _just_ before it disintegrates. Yum!!!

@Jirikiha @andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron

I grew up on *NZ Marmite and it wasn’t until I was flatting with a Vegemite fan that I became a convert. Imo, Marmite is far sweeter than Vegemite and I can no longer eat it. My wife and kids however still prefer Marmite over Vegemite so we always have both in the house.

*British Marmite is terrible

@jeremy_pm @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron Wow. Interesting. I’ve never seen the word “sweet” used in conjunction with marmite

@andymoose @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron

Do a taste comparison. The word sweet, in terms of Marmite, is relative to its flavour compared with Vegemite. Marmite is certainly not a sweet yeast spread.

@jeremy_pm @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron I will, if I can get my hands on vegemite here. With marmite I will spread a layer approximately 1 micron in thickness over toast. Presumably this is how to also eat vegemite.
@bgrinter @jeremy_pm @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron My first ever experience with marmite was photo number 2 and after I regained consciousness I went with the “for beginners” option.

@andymoose @jeremy_pm @Jirikiha @fullfathomfive @dyckron
😂

Once this ear worm gets in you won’t get it out either 😉

@andymoose @jeremy_pm @fullfathomfive @dyckron another way to eat Vegemite is to add a spoonful to stews or meat pies. It adds a savoury depth of flavor that complements them well.

@Jirikiha @andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron

Call me weird but sometimes I eat Vegemite off a tea spoon.

@Jirikiha @andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron

To be clear, that’s lick rather than eat.

@jeremy_pm @andymoose @fullfathomfive @dyckron How many licks does it take to get to the center of the Vegemite pop? LOL
@fullfathomfive Marmite healthier than Vegemite confirmed, lol

@fullfathomfive Marmite vs Vegemite is the foodies version of Emacs vs Vim. 🤣

#flamewar 🔥

@fullfathomfive

Those Canadians... Always so polite.

Clearly they've never had it with cheese 😳

@fullfathomfive Canada tries to #StopTheSpread

(j/k I've never tried Vegemite, but that's who I'm rooting for here.)

@fullfathomfive Finally Albo has an achievement to boast of for his first term!
@fullfathomfive
😂😂😂 I love it, but only thinly spread across buttered toast. No cheesy mite crap.
@fullfathomfive @lurkjay this is an american plot to pit our countries against each other and divide us >_>

Better than having a workplace accident and having a bar stuck in your head!!!

@fullfathomfive @mos_8502

@fullfathomfive You're never fully safe from Vegemite.

@nini

My partner stores a jar of whatever fundamentalist denomination the stuff belongs to (kiwi) at my place (in some airtight confinement of mine, to be sure; I always fear to mistake it for heavy crude oil some day). All I know: it seems to stay forever: no vermin hellish enough to like it.

@fullfathomfive gonna consider this next time we eat Vegemite spoon by spoon. too bad the jars are so small, gotta import new ones already again.

(gotta write "poses low risk to humanity" to the (strongly outdated) fedi bio.)

@fullfathomfive I mean, compared with such commonplace occurrences as blue-ringed octopus and eastern brown snake, it's nearly harmless!
