Damnit I just remembered what I’d like for Xmas - that Bob’s Burgers cook book. I was asked if there was anything I’d like but I said I didn’t know (I never know - I’m very difficult to shop for because I checked out of all that consumerism years ago. I shuffle around every day in my PJs using 5-10 year old equipment for my work and only ever buying necessities like water filters, coffee machines, cleaning products, kitchen stuff and lightbulbs).

I still think back to that fateful day in February 2020, after I’d come back from a friends engagement party, when I announced to anyone who’d listen that 2020 was the year that I would be more social and get out more (after years of dealing with our autistic son who had turned our lives upside down at that point but was starting to handle things better by 2020). I shudder at the absurdist fucking dark irony of it all. So yeah I caused this with my hubris.

I once read a story about the people writing the software for the NASA Apollo missions. There was a functionary in charge of weight accounting, who came to them and asked how much the software would weigh.

They told him it weighted nothing, but the functionary had heard *that* one before and insisted—everything had to be accounted down to the last ounce. He demanded to see it.

They showed him a stack of punched cards, and he was triumphant. “You see,” he said smugly, “it doesn't weigh only ‘nothing’!”

“No, you misunderstand,” they replied. “The cards aren't going on the spacecraft. Only the holes.”

By carving out so many exemptions to masking in health care (canteens, patient rooms, admin buildings, staff rooms etc) are the provincial health authorities simply trying to lay the groundwork for “proving” that masks don’t work, so in future they wont have to try at all?
