@jeffjarvis On jeez. #SafetyCritical #software is not something to just screw around with.
Somebody help the #FAA
@jeffjarvis lots of outages already. I suspect they have already been tinkering this is a screenshot from @JetTip which reports on various outages including FAA data streams they are dependent on.
EDIT: Apparently these outages are normal.
JFC!
Who are the "DOGE team"? What are they plugging in? Where did the upgrade come from? What testing has been done? What is the upgrade supposed to do?
Based on what little we know, IMO, it's likely cloning data and sending it to Musk. It won't *help* anything, only open American aviation to hacking.
The Federal Aviation Administration has reportedly banned its employees from attending advisory panels set up to explore how to make air travel safer, Politico reported on Tuesday.A new directive issued to FAA employees says they “should not attend (in-person or virtually) … until further notice,” a...
@clintruin
If people are involved, they won't be able to make all the efficiency improvements they need, cluttering up discussions with demands for oxygen and other luxuries.
@exthemius Technically they *could* prevent social media accounts posting, but the info is available to anyone who wants it, so it would be a game of whack-a-mole I reckon.
(Side note: receiving ADS-B signals is a really fun weekend project if you're nerd-inclined! 🤓)
Yes, and from wealthy enough homes that they can afford to work for free ...thereby insulating them from understanding the reality of the people who need the programs they cut.
@TCatInReality @jeffjarvis @StillIRise1963 I’ve heard somewhere that Musk wants to feed all of the data into some giant AI model
I’m sure this will end well
@jeffjarvis if there was any doubt until now they are trying to take over the government

Simpler troubles from better days...
Long-planned international flight Saturday. I've been telling friends that it feels like a really uneasy time to be leaving the country. That was before the script kiddie clown show got hold of the reins. If I die in a plane crash, avenge me.
@jeffjarvis Any time before the last couple of weeks I'd say this was an overreaction, that even terrible policy- and decision- makers at the top of agencies are pretty far removed from safety critical and operational systems, with damage (or improvements) only visible over the longer term.
Not anymore. Glad I've got no trips scheduled for a while.
@mattblaze @jeffjarvis
What will the super wealthy do? Can they create a shadow air traffic control system that they themselves trust?
Even if you John Travolta yourself a private runway big enough to land a 747 right outside your front door, it won't fix the problem when, say, you want to visit Las Vegas. (And the flying private set *really* seems to love Las Vegas)
This won't help you feel more comfortable about flying.

@jeffjarvis Taking bets on the first promised timeframe estimate for FULL SELF FLYING
I got $50 on "within 18 months"
My time of flying as little as possible is certainly coming to a middle.
Addressed just to Americans, I assume. The rest of us just have to not fly to America. And believe, me, we are all cancelling travel plans already, even the ones by car.
Hey! If you leave America, and don't come back, you'll be safe from their airplanes!
@jeffjarvis
Hi, somehow the text of your post ended up in the Alt-Text.
Here's the correct #ALT4you :
Tweet from Secretary Sean Duffy: "Big News - Talked to the DOGE team. They are going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system." Posted at 1:37pm on February 5, 2025, 212.3K views
@jeffjarvis I'm constantly being amazed these days by the total and unending hubris displayed by these folks.
'OH, it can't be that complicated. It's just software. And I'm a quick learner. What are you worried about? Two or three days and we'll have you running so smoothly you'll wonder why you never invited us in before this.'
@jeffjarvis There’s good reason it’s said that aviation regulations are written in blood. Hard lessons learned, paid for with the ultimate price.
Understanding why things are done in certain ways takes a huge investment of time and effort - and there are real world examples of people dying because lessons were missed.
Bringing in a bunch of people on the wrong side of the Dunning-Kruger curve to change things has only one possible outcome.
I gave up on flying in America two decades ago when the Patriot Act came around. My last was on a small passenger plane with hardly any headroom so that you had to bend over to get into your seat, and all you could really do was sit there.
Trains take longer, but there's much more space on it.
