Anyone find Sequoia is worse with Bluetooth reliability? Or is the M1 just doomed to not have great Bluetooth and I need to upgrade soon, haha
Lemme just connect to these AirPods… no… okay what about these… no?
@christianselig Disregarding all of the things I said earlier about bluetooth apps, I have actually found that AirBuddy from @_inside is really good at somehow kicking this in the pants and getting it working. Not sure what magic he is using but it works like 98% of the time where the Apple menu is maybe closer to 60% of the time.
@christianselig I always thought that was an OS bug because there are certain steps I can take to reproduce a similar bug
@christianselig could it be a coincidental AirPods firmware upgrade causing the issues instead?

@christianselig So that is pretty much what happens with my one pair of AirPods Pro … but *only* that pair. Everything else works great.

Makes me suspect the AirPods themselves, or maybe something with Handoff?

@christianselig Apple Music on MacOS is so broken, yet Apple send out questionnaires asking you to deep dive your favourite genres etc etc. At no point do they ask if it actually works.
@christianselig I've been having wicked audio subsystem problems on Sonoma, so now I'm apprehensive about the Sequoia update…
@christianselig I've had random problems with AirPlay devices when trying to connect from this audio menu, have you tried connecting from the bluetooth menu? 🤔

@christianselig I haven't had any problems with my M2 Pro on Sequoia (I have an M1 Pro, but it's not updated).

No BT problems until, that is, I use MS Teams. Teams has always f'd up bluetooth, even on Windows.

@christianselig Yes. But I have found that it depends on which apps you have running that might mess with the audio stack. Specifically I have found SoundSource (Love you guys, @RogueAmoeba! I know you are always working on fixes.) to basically make my AirPods unusable. If I am trying to watch something I miss a full couple of seconds after hitting play before the audio comes in. If I quit it, they work just like they should.
@bmpitzen @RogueAmoeba I don't think I have anything that does that
@christianselig No Bluetooth utility apps? iStats or anything monitoring your bluetooth devices?Or any kind of audio recording/processing software?
@bmpitzen I do have iStat, but I don't see anything in the menu bar about Bluetooth devices, and I've been running it for years on this Mac without issue
@christianselig I would check in the `batteries` widget or the bluetooth settings in iStats. If it is trying to monitor something about your devices it could be causing issues. Basically I think there is something broken with the audio buffer process and _anything_ that is trying to do something with bluetooth is breaking the buffer. I have no evidence other than just troubleshooting on my own but that's what it seems like.
@bmpitzen 🙇‍♂️ indeed we are! Watch for updates and stay in touch.
@christianselig My M1 mini hasn't been any worse since Sequoia, but that is truly a low bar…
@christianselig haven't updated yet, but it works pretty much as expected pretty much all of the time on my M1. So unless Apple is making the software intentionally worse, I don't see how this would be a hardware limitation..?
@edihael The M1 in general has been plagued for years by unreliable Bluetooth reports, it's gotten a lot better with M3 and higher though
@christianselig hm interesting! guess I was lucky then
@christianselig yes, it got much worse. Also, I'm on M1 Max.
@christianselig everything works “fine” here (if this is possible in the Mac world)
@christianselig I’ve never noticed *any* Bluetooth problems at all with my M1 Pro MBP – I use Apple’s BT mouse and keyboard regularly, occasionally AirPods… Do they commonly have issues, or maybe you’ve got a dud?!
@Drarok I wish, the M1 andM2 series has long had a terrible Bluetooth reputation unfortunately, but it seems like M3 and higher are a fair bit better
@christianselig bizarre! My work machine is an M1 Max, same BT keys+mouse daily, occasional AirPods use, no trouble at all.
@Drarok Dangit wanna trade? :p
@christianselig I think my managers would have some choice words about that! 😅

@christianselig Nope. No issues with my 14” M1 Max MBP & bluetooth. It’s been rock-solid.

I do have the occasional issue with a pair of AirPods Pro that I have, but it’s specific to that particular pair (they act up no matter what Mac I connect them to). My old AirPods work fine w/my M1 MBP, as do all my other bluetooth headsets.

@christianselig Well, so far in Sequoia I have had a one-time issue with Teams not outputting sound in a group video chat session (Logitech ”certified Teams” headphones). The same group chat session worked instantly today, though. I really double-checked all audio settings and made sure the Bluetooth headphones were paired and ”lit up” in Control Center.

Before that, my main M1 BT issues almost exclusively happened in Big Sur and just sometimes (rarely) in Monterey, I think.

@christianselig Even though Logitech USB mini dongles are annoying since they steal one of my two USB-A inputs, I find that they work better with macOS than using pure Bluetooth (Logi keyboards and mice). Overall, headphones mostly work great (98 % of times) on Bluetooth without dongles.
@christianselig Still using 2018 MacBook and pairing with AirPods was so unreliable that i just completely stopped using it. Bluetooth connection in general e.g with Logitech Mice works flawless though.
@christianselig nope all good with my M1 Max 16 inch.

@christianselig It may be radio or modem issues in general. I get frequent WiFi issues now where it all looks connected but no traffic is making it to the Internet. All other devices work fine at the same time and this didn’t happen before on macOS 14.

My fix is to restart networking using the setairportpower command.

@christianselig Huh, the trackpad and keyboard remain stable for me (all apple’s own, M1 Mini). Although I don’t connect any airpods to the Mac.

@christianselig Well, it is Oct 1st, so it is prepared for the upcoming M4 Mac announcements.

I didn’t see it get worse but maybe try turning off Apple Watch integration if you have it and see if it works better.

@christianselig my Magic Keyboard started randomly disconnecting and taking forever to reconnect, the only thing after reading everything I found online that made sense was disabling 2.4 GHz on my WiFi. So far it has been working fine.
@christianselig Bluetooth’s been terrible for me in Sequoia. Slow pairing/initialization, choppy and delayed playback, some apps aren’t recognizing connected devices…
@christianselig launch M1 Max here. I finally gave up with trying to fix the keyboard lag. I just keep my Magic Keyboard with Touch ID plugged in all the time. I also can’t use AirPods Pro with it reliably. I’ve had these issues since launch I’d say.
@christianselig yes I have, my AirPods are almost unusable since the update and were fine beforehand

@christianselig No issues with my MBP M1 Pro, using AirPods, Sennheiser headphones and BT keyboard/trackpad

I have had issues with odd choices of audio device switching unrelated to Bluetooth. The machine choosing internal speaker over dock speakers when docking, switching to BlackHole instead of internal speaker when disconnecting AirPods, etc.

@christianselig That's the reason I usually wait for 15.1 release before I update
@christianselig It’s def a little more hinky for me too.
