Hello everyone, I’m Maartje De Meulder. After spending years on X, I’ve decided to give Mastodon a try.

I’m a senior researcher at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and I split my time mainly between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Norway.

I’ll be mostly posting about all things language, disability, and technologies, and how they intersect, along with navigating academia.

You may have already noticed the difference between Mastodon users and those on Xitter.

For example, I've just read seventeen other replies to your introductory post, and in relation to your work and being 'deaf', the comments seem to be somewhere between 'supportive of' and 'interested in' your work.

But had this been Xitter, at least one idiot would have typed in ALL CAPS SO YOU MIGHT HEAR THEM!

I trust you'll find this a much better place to funnel your efforts in comparison to X.

You'll probably wonder why you put it off for so long.

It can be a slow start, but follow keywords for things you're interested in, and the contacts will gradually grow in number.

People here will listen to you more than they comment. Stupid trolling is rare to non-existent.

You will get less feedback, but what you DO get is made by real people, not bots.

@mdemeulder I hope you'll have a rewarding and satisfactory experience using mastodon (and other actipub services).
In ways, mastodon is more like a #listserv because no "algorithm" suggests what to see: one sees and is seen by other members of one's server. Also seen by any followers one has from any server. And (lastly) seen by anyone on a server/instance where someone follows you, if they (others) look at that view.
Post-lastly, search results, esp. with #hashtags.

Welcome... A bit of a heads-up about Mastodon, we don't have a magic algorithm shoving content at you, instead you have to pick the content you want, this means that it is very common for people to follow a lot of people, unlike the fowl site, know one will judge you for following 20K people/sites here... And I have not seen a single person talk about getting ratio'd either.
