New paper with Robin Angelini and Katta Spiel!
What would technologies look like if they centred around the experiences and desires of deaf people? We highlight the concept of DeafWatch as a starting point for new ways of thinking about technology from deaf-centred perspectives.
The Financial Times highlights the importance of disabled representation and leadership in tech design, and we're excited to see our latest paper on deaf leadership in sign language AI research featured.
Reportage over het tekort aan tolken NGT-NL in Nederland. De sleutel tot het probleem ligt echter niet enkel in méér tolken opleiden: het is ook bétere tolken opleiden, de tolkeninzet en budgetten anders organiseren, meer inzetten op horende mensen die gebaren, en in de toekomst mogelijk een deel oplossen door taaltechnologie - de reportage brengt al die facetten in beeld.
De dovengemeenschap maakt zich zorgen over het tekort aan gebarentolken in Nederland. Met schrijnende situaties tot gevolg. "Het lukte niet om een tolk te vinden voor de begrafenis, dus hij moest online kijken met ondertiteling. Heel verdrietig."

This week @JosephMurray and I are in Brazil to lead a workshop for a group of 80+ deaf researchers in various career stages, covering academic writing, publishing, doing a PhD, etc. Brazil has over 100 deaf PhDs mainly thanks to a very strong focus on capacity building and Libras language policy.
Will AI soon surpass the human brain? If you ask employees at OpenAI, Google DeepMind and other large tech companies, it is inevitable. However, researchers @Iris and @olivia at Radboud University and others show new proof that those claims are overblown and unlikely to ever come to fruition. Their findings are published in Computational Brain & Behavior today.
