For anyone on the Contacts team at Apple…

FB14170572: Add "Date Deceased" field to Contact records

@agiletortoise 🕯️ would be a great emoji for the calendar event.
@agiletortoise "Many people also, eventually, die." 👏
@designatednerd I didn't want to assume they were aware.
@agiletortoise @designatednerd I guess it *has* been over a quarter century since the Onion's intrepid reporting on the matter, after all: https://www.theonion.com/world-death-rate-holding-steady-at-100-percent-1819564171
World Death Rate Holding Steady At 100 Percent

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND—World Health Organization officials expressed disappointment Monday at the group's finding that, despite the enormous efforts of doctors, rescue workers and other medical professionals worldwide, the global death rate remains constant at 100 percent.

Option to block dead people from calling and messaging you might also be good 🤔

@agiletortoise @designatednerd Tell me without telling me that a project team has not enough senior developers.
@tsturm @agiletortoise @designatednerd Perhaps I've missed the point, but do you know of any tech company that implements more than 1% of the "ideas" or "suggestions" submitted by its customers? Text doesn't convey tone very well, so please know that I'm asking this question completely sincerely. I would love to know whether such a company exists.
@agiletortoise this could also help with the thing where messaging apps notify me that "<dead person> has joined telegram!", when their phone number is reallocated to a new person.

@agiletortoise This would be great.

In the meantime, personally I’ve added ⚱️ to all my deceased contacts. I also have a “Deceased” date along with their birth date. I thought that was built-in but it may be a custom label.

@ccunning @agiletortoise

I add a suffix of DEC for all my deceased contacts (the ones I want to retain/remember), so I have a visual cue when I’m scrolling names.

@agiletortoise I've been able to add custom date fields for contacts for this reason.

Unfortunately, Google Calendar thinks every contact date is something to celebrate. With balloons.

So yes, all for this feature. A bit grim, but that's life.

@agiletortoise how about fixing something for the still living? (Sorry a bit dark). , talking about dark:
Can fucking #carplay finally get an option to manually deactivate dark mode (when headlights are on during daylight - where in many European countries it is mandatory? )
Never seeing so much narcissism over so many years by a company choosing to ignore this.
@MrWeg @agiletortoise could add "hey Google Maps / Android Auto, I told you my car is electric, stop fucking reminding me my region is a Low-Emission Zone and I might be denied entry if by chance that whole Android Auto receiver was transplanted into a clunker".
@c_chep @MrWeg @agiletortoise CarPlay has this same issue, which is annoying since it knows which car I’m. Just add a field for “I’m Euro 6, don’t worry about it”.
It also has some partially-implemented idea that people may drive multiple cars — except that it only saves the parking location for the most recent car driven. Not useful when I’m trying to remember where I parked and it’s showing me where I left the rental car thousands of miles away!
@agiletortoise This kind of approach should also be a part of Photos’ “People and Pets” galleries.
@adavid @agiletortoise Very much so. Photos really needs to stop suggesting my son is in a photo. It’s been 4 years, he’s not going to be in any more.
@agiletortoise In case you're not aware, CardHop supports that already. But I agree Contacts should as well.

@agiletortoise @dmoren “Many people, also, eventually die.”

Such poetry in a feedback.

@agiletortoise I’ve submitted the same request at least twice before, first time a decade ago.

With all the changes and extra fields in Contacts over the years, it’s amazing how this still hasn’t been implemented.

@agiletortoise Mind boggling that this bug hasn’t been fixed for so, so, so many years.
@agiletortoise @siracusa it took me 10 years to remove a college buddy. I’m not sure how long it’ll take for my friend that passed a year ago or so.
@agiletortoise there is the possibility to add personalized dates on the contact information
@agiletortoise “Please do not enable autocomplete on this field”
@agiletortoise Thank you for doing this, it has become...a thing...for me the past few years. I tried deleting people from Contacts but then their iMessages become ID'd just by phone number.
@agiletortoise The Contacts *team*. You are funny.
@agiletortoise strange timing. Today would have been my father’s birthday. I still have his contact in my phone. World is funny sometimes.
@agiletortoise for whatever it is worth, Cardhop allows you to set a death date.
@agiletortoise The issue goes a little deeper than one might think. Contacts is built around the vCard standard, which doesn't have the field specified either: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6350
RFC 6350: vCard Format Specification

@helge I mean, kinda sorta. They are already doing a lot of things that are outside that spec.

@agiletortoise

Why give them more info than they need? Simple Boolean isActive would do. Leave the reason out of it.

@agiletortoise I swear, sometimes I think Apple is staffed by only sweet summer children.

I've almost threw my phone through a wall when the Photos app recommended I share this great photo with my dad ... who died earlier that year.

Same with their stupid memories collage.

@agiletortoise I heartedly support this!

In addition/alternative to, I would love to see a standard around archiving of contacts or contact information, where contacts can remain in your contacts list and be linked to historical information, but not be suggested for auto complete, etc. for things going forward.

@agiletortoise @sam Was literally just talking about this with my husband the other day. A way to hide or segment away certain contacts that are no longer around but still being able to use Contacts to store info about them would be really nice.
@agiletortoise you might consider saving this to https://github.com/feedback-assistant/reports , for easier reuse. "Apple encourages duplicates."

@agiletortoise I filed the same bug report March 23, 2016 FB5790227. I was marked as duplicate, "This feedback was created from radar ID 25315674".
@agiletortoise @cstross Yes, if you try and keep the anniversaries of their passing, Apple AI cheerfully reminds you on the day: “Hey it’s mum's birthday, give her a call”
@agiletortoise @siracusa I agree wholeheartedly with the suggestion of having ML avoid suggesting we wish happy birthdays and making the default template include a DOD field / calendar display. Just in case you weren’t aware, you can add it as a default custom entry in the Contacts template on Mac and use on iOS.

@agiletortoise Totally agree.

Also, somewhat related: I sometimes get the impression that in Silicon Valley, and especially at Apple:

* people don't die
* it never rains
* it is never cold so nobody uses their phones in gloves
* nobody has more than 80 photos in their library
* every photo is perfect and there is only one take of each scene
* everybody can stop at any moment, take out their phone and look at it when Siri tells them "you will need to unlock your iphone first"

@agiletortoise I would appreciate these improvements tremendously.
I can't bring myself to remove the ones I lost so far.
@agiletortoise my digital address book began in a Casio data bank watch in the eighties and has been transferred over to newer systems until landing on macOS and friends. I never delete anyone. This would be a great little thing to add.
@agiletortoise this! I have contacts of loved ones passed which I cannot bear to delete.
@agiletortoise I was looking for something like this for my sister’s passing. Also discovered a need for an “anniversary” type of field, and to appear in calendar like birthdays does!

@agiletortoise I added my father's DOD as an "Other" date in Contacts. Just noticed yesterday that it showed up on my Calendar as "[Dad]'s special day!" 🤦‍♂️ All this talk of privacy and health and they go and re-traumitze me like that. 😢

I moved it to the notes field, but I'm with you, they really should enable making the whole system aware.
