It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».

They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).

I find that scary, because it means that some people, more and more each year, seem to view any regulation of any company as « meddling » or as a bad thing, which also means some people want MORE unbridled capitalism.
They also seem to link helping people who aren’t as rich, or privileged as something bad, and that inherently implies a worldview where everyone is just out for themselves.

At a time where we should have more compassion, a serious re-evaluation of our priorities, our way of life, of consumption, it’s disheartening.

And especially in the Linux community where helping others and sharing is at the very core of everything: how do you reconcile « no one should have « handouts » (except tax cuts for companies apparently) with « let’s share knowledge openly and develop things for others to use freely »?

@thelinuxEXP I like the fact that the EU is more proactive on their approach on regulating big tech in their region, just because they can operate how they want in one country, doesn't mean they can operate the same in another, and having to meet the regulation requirements of that region or face penalties as a result, and these big tech companies do need to be reigned in a regulated, or they keep getting away with what they've always been doing unchecked.
@Alkaris @thelinuxEXP Absolutely. The EU isn’t a wonderful thing that does nothing wrong, but on their regulation of companies, I really have a hard time seeing how curbing their power, abuses, and privacy invasions could ever be seen as a bad thing!
@thelinuxEXP @Alkaris
I do recognize the need for caution where government controls are concerned though. The words Freedom and Human Rights come to mind.
It's a balancing act

@thelinuxEXP @Alkaris Well the EU is good about corporate invasions of privacy but they *love* state invasions of privacy, unfortunately.

The tide seems to be turning on that a bit.

@thelinuxEXP considering recent events in the NixOS community this thread hits different...

@thelinuxEXP for anyone unfamiliar (since this might be seen by people well outside the NixOS community):

Open Letter | NixOS Users Against MIC Sponsorship

@thelinuxEXP I highly recommend Veritasium's video about game theory. It gave me a totally different perspective on how and why cooperation works. I feel more optimistic after watching it.
@thelinuxEXP everyone using words as "woke" is mostly linked to the antidemocratic movement for instance here in Germany they are linked to the Afd or in the USA to maga. So in my opinion it is not worth speaking with or dealing with them in a respectful way.they just want attention. They spread their frustration that's all.
@thelinuxEXP And have compassion for #animals and the horrors that they go through with factory farming and slaughter houses.

@thelinuxEXP do you think a license which requires reciprocity makes any sense?

Example modified start of the MIT license:

> Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any non-racist person [...]

Not sure what wording to use so I picked racism as an example / proof of concept. The term should be very basic such that everyone who isn't evil will agree with it. Assuming such a word can be found, would this make sense to add? Similar to the licenses requiring reciprocity in sharing back

@thelinuxEXP well said … sadly most people don’t understand that the real problem is unchecked capitalism which favours large companies and super wealthy
@thelinuxEXP
Correlation between seeing more and more each year and Linux/FOSS becoming more and more popular? 💭
I myself have noticed a change in 'tone' on this platform since the great Twitter migration.
@thelinuxEXP The lack of presence of Chinese people in the western internet is really hurting all of us.
@thelinuxEXP the prolem, mon ami, is some ppl cannot decide if they wanna b open source practitioners or in the proprietary camp. there are days that i agree that there shd b room 4 both but push comes 2 shove, the cold hard fact is either u r for us, or against us.
@thelinuxEXP
Oh Nick man, you don't know how many times a week I'm thankful for having you and the rest of the european podcasters/youtubers (including the Brits), because if it weren't for you we'll be only listening these type of ideas from the other side of the pond, which coming from the "Linux" **community** is fucking worying. Having said that, fuck.those morons.
@thelinuxEXP There’s been this divide for a long time between people making FOSS who are largely left leaning (socialist, communists, etc) and people consuming it who at least some fraction are loud and right leaning (libertarian, preppers, ancaps, etc). Unfortunately it seems like in recent years Linux-related media, especially in the US, leans heavily towards these right wing folks. So it doesn’t surprise me their anti-cooperative attitudes are spreading
@danirabbit @thelinuxEXP I'm from the US and I think many of those people are just a$$holes. Don't normalize it but also don't think everybody is like that.
@danirabbit @thelinuxEXP got it, we need more puppygirls on podcasts talking about linux
@thelinuxEXP
How can those anti-woke reactionary Linux users can see that the jokes on them, how can't they see Linux and generally FOSS is somewhat closely resembling socialism, it's as you sad it's all about helping others and sharing?
@thelinuxEXP In the UK we are seeing 'taking back control' means less freedoms for individuals and more freedoms for companies - some of whom use this to exploit and influence.
@thelinuxEXP I don't know how big it is in the Western world but Indians love worshipping billionaires, when we have time left after harassing foreigners for being critical of the country, we take time to harass people who are critical of the billionaires. Most of these billionaires make their money by paying next to nothing to their employees for the contracts they get from abroad.
one of the richest Indians who owns a tech outsourcing company and is also the father-in-law of the British prime minister, said employees should work 70-hour weeks. And the suits on Linked In lap it up! His company's average salary for developers is barely 700 USD per month!
@thelinuxEXP likewise mon cher. i'm afraid the only thing as open souce practitioners, we hv 2 stick together & b nice 2 1 another. The only thing i seen us to is squable among ourselves. Which is y the proprietary boys r kicking our asses!
@thelinuxEXP Consider the fact that most of the aggressive EU corporate regulation is directed towards US based companies. That in itself, outside of merit, tends to trigger nationalist responses, not necessarily economic responses. I'm a retired IT professional, and I look at EU regulations as typically well intended but technically immature. Regulating technology is not the same as regulating technology companies. The EU often seems to not understand the distinction.
@thelinuxEXP I don’t understand how these people think. Woke means awake to problems or simply aware of your situation. These “anti-woke” posters seem to revel in being unaware.

@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP It feels like they decided that « woke » means anything they don’t like, and this also seems to include trying to discriminate less, or being more accepting of others.

When someone uses the term « woke » seriously, I generally tend to automatically discard what they’re saying, because that term is rarely used to mean anything other than « I’m very conservative and I don’t like change in society ».

@thelinuxEXP Yes, exactly that. It’s just a catch-all term for things they don’t - or won’t - understand. But Big Everything likes it that way as it makes them easier to control.

@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP

It has become so on the right, which is, unfortunately, another way in which something from the Black (African-American) tradition of social commentary has been taken and ruined, so that now something which was very serious when created cannot be taken seriously, as Nick says, because it has been coopted by bad actors.

@thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat Agreed. One of things I like about Mastodon - I’m new here - is that I never see anyone that boasts about being anti-woke or similar bigotry. Maybe I’m just lucky.
@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat
Tanks to the federate nature of the Fediverse not all servers are federate with those servers which has lax rules and let all kinds of bigotry fly rampantly. My experience is kinda the same anit-woke bigotry is rarely a thing I see. I appreciate I don't have to see all these nasty things each and every day, at least not here.

@light @thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat Indeed. I also block anyone with country flag emojis. I don’t want or need nationalists and patriots in my feed.

As someone wise once said, patriotism is the conviction that your country is the best simply because you were born there.

@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat
Yeah we have seen multiple times throughout history only atrocities came from nationalism, therefore I strongly condemn nationalism not just ultra nationalism the more extremist form of it.
Patriotism as I understand is nationalism for the US, that's their form of nationalism.
@light @thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat I think it was Shaw who said patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP @jezebelkat
According to this article its Samuel Johnson from whom said it originally, but there's multiple variations of the phrase "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" said by different people.

Patriotism is the Last Refuge of a Scoundrel – Quote Investigator®

@thelinuxEXP @light @jezebelkat I was pretty sure it was Johnson. Thanks for the confirmation.
@thelinuxEXP some haskell dev (srid) did say I was spreading EU propaganda documents (by linking to documents from the EU that labeled his views as extremist).

@thelinuxEXP Don't let them use your platform to advertise themselves. It is not their "rights" to hijack your comments for their own.

Block them without remorse. It is moderation, not "censorship", no matter how they love to use that word.

And don't forget to stay awesome as usual. :)

@thelinuxEXP

As if being woke is a problem (again, the origin is African-Americans and it simply means being aware of inequality in our systems), and Europe has had center left socialist/social democratic/democratic socialist parties since the end of WW2. A little late to be complaining.

@thelinuxEXP I think EU cares about what Apple has in their Appstore or what Microsoft has in their Windows search feature, but I don’t see any activity about spreading chinese malware called TikTok. They should reconsider our priorities, I think spreading chinese spyware is a bigger problem than Apple’s Appstore and I see no proactivity there.

@ratatoskr @thelinuxEXP Eu’s policies don’t just target big tech companies in the US, they also target anyone in the same position of power.

Everyone needs to comply with GDPR, everyone needs to comply with DMA etc. If EU only goes after TikTok then that would be hypocritical since they aren’t the only company who collects data about their users.

@thelinuxEXP I don't think there's really too much thought after those comments. As Europe steadily drifts back to fascism, anything less than genocide is seen as extremist left.

@kAlvaro @thelinuxEXP True. Seeing all these far right parties gaining voters is insane to me. It was less than 100 years ago that we had to contend with this.

We have to contend with it right now, with Russia… How can people be this blind, I don’t know.

@thelinuxEXP @kAlvaro Nick, you say this because you live in a city, well educated, you seem to be your own boss and (to some extend) have control over the course of your life.
I mean it’s easy to be locked in some kind of bubble and don’t catch what is happening to other people.
The raise of far-right is difficult for me to accept (bluntly: I just can’t accept it) but I have difficulties to condemn **a part** of the people that are falling for these political speeches.

@thelinuxEXP @kAlvaro Some people are truly desperate and it’s also fair to state that national leaders as well as European leaders just failed to address their issues.
Comparatively to the US, China or India, the EU quality of life and economy-security has stagnated and there’s a significant decoupling from people in the EU.

Tough to wake up hanged-over after 20 years of doing the wrong things and suddenly realize “Oh shit people are pissed ! Why ? How ?”

EU cannot keep pace with US and China in economic growth

“Política Exterior” magazine carries out a comparative analysis of the economic growth of the European Union (EU), the United States (US) and China. In its opinion, Europe's decisions in recent years have highlighted its weaknesses in the struggle for global leadership. Europe's slower economic growth would be the consequence of its failure to lead in some of the leading sectors, poor policy decisions, and its inability to keep pace with the US and China, not least because of a less flexible regulatory framework. On the positive side, the EU has established itself as the welfare region par excellence.

Santander Bank

@thelinuxEXP

Ironically, no country's economy on this planet is either totally Capitalism or Communism

In other words, every one is Socialist 😂

@dan_tran_van @thelinuxEXP Fortunately, most countries have a very minimal safety net for people!
@thelinuxEXP the EU was attacked by the far right and far left for decades in the UK, and Brexit was the result. The UK is now a basket case with a far right populist government trying to blame everything on foreigners. The bigotry that surfaced is quite shocking and the Tories like Trump are in the pocket of Putin to the tune of millions...

@thelinuxEXP sounds like unhinged fanboy-ism to me...

Still, that's not the way to go. We need to keep the biggest players on a leash, or else they'll put us on it. There's basically no way for small companies to get around in a field where e.g. Google or Apple are already in a monopoly.

Cyberpunk is an interesting universe, still I like to be able to leave it, when I close the game 😅 and not something, I want my kids to live in.

@thelinuxEXP Oh, dont mind those idiots.

They are the same idiots who cry asking for regulations whenever something like Occupy Wall Street happens and they exploit the "game" against their interest. But whenever they are the ones "winning the game", everyone else asking for regulations is a comunist and any action of whistleblowing is woke propaganda.

@thelinuxEXP

Well it is because these people have no idea what they are talking about. Not about freedom, not about civil rights, not about social security nor about democracy or freedom of speech.

@thelinuxEXP

Woke is fascists coming up with a term consideration and empathy which they despise.

Also most of them can't tell the difference between Socialism and Communism which given their extremist worldview isn't too surprising.

Big tech badly needs regulating and the US can't or won't do it. So others will need to do it for them 🙂🤷‍♂️

@thelinuxEXP I think most people want to see widespread human flourishing, we just disagree on how to achieve it.
@thelinuxEXP Fash othering. *sigh* The conflation of socialism with communism is a capitalist propaganda effort. again *sigh*
