It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».

They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).

I find that scary, because it means that some people, more and more each year, seem to view any regulation of any company as « meddling » or as a bad thing, which also means some people want MORE unbridled capitalism.
They also seem to link helping people who aren’t as rich, or privileged as something bad, and that inherently implies a worldview where everyone is just out for themselves.

At a time where we should have more compassion, a serious re-evaluation of our priorities, our way of life, of consumption, it’s disheartening.

And especially in the Linux community where helping others and sharing is at the very core of everything: how do you reconcile « no one should have « handouts » (except tax cuts for companies apparently) with « let’s share knowledge openly and develop things for others to use freely »?

@thelinuxEXP I like the fact that the EU is more proactive on their approach on regulating big tech in their region, just because they can operate how they want in one country, doesn't mean they can operate the same in another, and having to meet the regulation requirements of that region or face penalties as a result, and these big tech companies do need to be reigned in a regulated, or they keep getting away with what they've always been doing unchecked.
@Alkaris @thelinuxEXP Absolutely. The EU isn’t a wonderful thing that does nothing wrong, but on their regulation of companies, I really have a hard time seeing how curbing their power, abuses, and privacy invasions could ever be seen as a bad thing!

@thelinuxEXP @Alkaris Well the EU is good about corporate invasions of privacy but they *love* state invasions of privacy, unfortunately.

The tide seems to be turning on that a bit.
