It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».
They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).
@Jawaka @thelinuxEXP It feels like they decided that « woke » means anything they don’t like, and this also seems to include trying to discriminate less, or being more accepting of others.
When someone uses the term « woke » seriously, I generally tend to automatically discard what they’re saying, because that term is rarely used to mean anything other than « I’m very conservative and I don’t like change in society ».
It has become so on the right, which is, unfortunately, another way in which something from the Black (African-American) tradition of social commentary has been taken and ruined, so that now something which was very serious when created cannot be taken seriously, as Nick says, because it has been coopted by bad actors.

As someone wise once said, patriotism is the conviction that your country is the best simply because you were born there.

According to this article its Samuel Johnson from whom said it originally, but there's multiple variations of the phrase "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" said by different people.
