It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».

They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).

I find that scary, because it means that some people, more and more each year, seem to view any regulation of any company as « meddling » or as a bad thing, which also means some people want MORE unbridled capitalism.
They also seem to link helping people who aren’t as rich, or privileged as something bad, and that inherently implies a worldview where everyone is just out for themselves.

At a time where we should have more compassion, a serious re-evaluation of our priorities, our way of life, of consumption, it’s disheartening.

And especially in the Linux community where helping others and sharing is at the very core of everything: how do you reconcile « no one should have « handouts » (except tax cuts for companies apparently) with « let’s share knowledge openly and develop things for others to use freely »?

@thelinuxEXP I like the fact that the EU is more proactive on their approach on regulating big tech in their region, just because they can operate how they want in one country, doesn't mean they can operate the same in another, and having to meet the regulation requirements of that region or face penalties as a result, and these big tech companies do need to be reigned in a regulated, or they keep getting away with what they've always been doing unchecked.
@Alkaris @thelinuxEXP Absolutely. The EU isn’t a wonderful thing that does nothing wrong, but on their regulation of companies, I really have a hard time seeing how curbing their power, abuses, and privacy invasions could ever be seen as a bad thing!
@thelinuxEXP @Alkaris
I do recognize the need for caution where government controls are concerned though. The words Freedom and Human Rights come to mind.
It's a balancing act

@thelinuxEXP @Alkaris Well the EU is good about corporate invasions of privacy but they *love* state invasions of privacy, unfortunately.

The tide seems to be turning on that a bit.

@thelinuxEXP considering recent events in the NixOS community this thread hits different...

@thelinuxEXP for anyone unfamiliar (since this might be seen by people well outside the NixOS community):

@thelinuxEXP I highly recommend Veritasium's video about game theory. It gave me a totally different perspective on how and why cooperation works. I feel more optimistic after watching it.
@thelinuxEXP everyone using words as "woke" is mostly linked to the antidemocratic movement for instance here in Germany they are linked to the Afd or in the USA to maga. So in my opinion it is not worth speaking with or dealing with them in a respectful way.they just want attention. They spread their frustration that's all.
@thelinuxEXP And have compassion for #animals and the horrors that they go through with factory farming and slaughter houses.

@thelinuxEXP do you think a license which requires reciprocity makes any sense?

Example modified start of the MIT license:

> Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any non-racist person [...]

Not sure what wording to use so I picked racism as an example / proof of concept. The term should be very basic such that everyone who isn't evil will agree with it. Assuming such a word can be found, would this make sense to add? Similar to the licenses requiring reciprocity in sharing back

@thelinuxEXP well said … sadly most people don’t understand that the real problem is unchecked capitalism which favours large companies and super wealthy
@thelinuxEXP
Correlation between seeing more and more each year and Linux/FOSS becoming more and more popular? 💭
I myself have noticed a change in 'tone' on this platform since the great Twitter migration.
@thelinuxEXP The lack of presence of Chinese people in the western internet is really hurting all of us.
@thelinuxEXP the prolem, mon ami, is some ppl cannot decide if they wanna b open source practitioners or in the proprietary camp. there are days that i agree that there shd b room 4 both but push comes 2 shove, the cold hard fact is either u r for us, or against us.
@thelinuxEXP
Oh Nick man, you don't know how many times a week I'm thankful for having you and the rest of the european podcasters/youtubers (including the Brits), because if it weren't for you we'll be only listening these type of ideas from the other side of the pond, which coming from the "Linux" **community** is fucking worying. Having said that, fuck.those morons.
@thelinuxEXP There’s been this divide for a long time between people making FOSS who are largely left leaning (socialist, communists, etc) and people consuming it who at least some fraction are loud and right leaning (libertarian, preppers, ancaps, etc). Unfortunately it seems like in recent years Linux-related media, especially in the US, leans heavily towards these right wing folks. So it doesn’t surprise me their anti-cooperative attitudes are spreading
@danirabbit @thelinuxEXP I'm from the US and I think many of those people are just a$$holes. Don't normalize it but also don't think everybody is like that.
@danirabbit @thelinuxEXP got it, we need more puppygirls on podcasts talking about linux
@thelinuxEXP
How can those anti-woke reactionary Linux users can see that the jokes on them, how can't they see Linux and generally FOSS is somewhat closely resembling socialism, it's as you sad it's all about helping others and sharing?
