So, do we still love Firefox because it’s not chrome or do we hate it because Mozilla is now in the AI business?
@jerry Firefox will forever be the best
@jerry It still lets us block ads, so I'm with Firefox.
@jerry it seems to be the least shitty choice of browser for the moment.
@jerry Huh? The what now? What did I miss?

@jerry Mozilla is always doing weird side things. I just kinda ignore it.

Firefox is critical to avoid the browser monopoly though

@jerry Every technology company is in the AI biz. If they aren't, they will be left behind.
@jerry vertical tree-style tabs are a prerequisite for my internet use now

@jerry *double clicks llamafile to respond with my plagiarized emotions to this Matadon instance from a Firefox browser.

In all seriousness though, I may not be enthralled with the prospect but I respect the execution.

@jerry
AI isn't inherently bad, just that virtually every company developing it is 🤣🤣😭

Anyway, Mozilla is one of the few orgs I can see developing something that's not both a licensing and a privacy disaster.
@0xamit

@jerry We love Firefox as... WaterFox.
Matt Nordhoff (@[email protected])

I don't get it, half the time Mozilla announces a new feature it's like "That's nice, and beneficial to users, and not motivated by advertiser profits." and half the time it's "You're putting ChatGPT in **what**?" https://social.security.plumbing/@freddy/111539071979005146 https://mozilla.social/@mozilla/111562605874551611

@jerry I stopped really liking #Firefox for desktop use when they got rid of their old and very powerful extension architecture, which was the true differentiator to #Chrome/#Webkit/#Blink. Right now I can't honestly say I like any of the Linux browsers, to paraphrase Linus Thorvalds, they all suck, the only question is which sucks less for my use case. None handle heavy tab use well anymore, which old Firefox was a master of. Vivaldi has some very poor session programming unfortunately.
@smxi @jerry Second this big time. Even so, I still mostly use FF as a way to encourage browser rendering engine diversity.
@jerry more like we need it because its not chrome

@jerry

Because it's not Chromium based. I posted a polite suggestion to drop the AI fad nonsense and concentrate on fixing and improving the core browser 😉🤷‍♂️

@jerry I still love Mozilla because they encourage ad blockers and chrome is making ad blockers harder to install. Everyone has come into the AI business. It's a buzz term lately.
@jerry I recently installed Firefox on a corporate networked system and the amount of noise I saw going to the Mozilla CDN is far too high. Pocket is a mess you can’t fully turn off without using InTune. It may suck less than Chrome, but boy it could be better. The tab management seems poor as I keep a lot of tabs open and have to scroll side to side. I don’t like it.
@jerry chrome is kinda owned by the so self-referred “the AI company”, sooo….
@jerry the premise was that it's not "yet another chatbot" - it instead delivered "yet another website builder". too milquetoast to love or hate 🤷

@jerry

Big thing is it does not rely upon certs installed in the OS.

@jerry We love Mozilla a little less for the AI nonsense, but we still have to go with Firefox if we want to do our part for a free web.

@jerry you're dead to me if you

* use Firefox due to the AI stuff
* use chrome, because it is chrome
* use brave because of their founder
* use safari, because it's from apple
* use Internet Explorer and edge because of Microsoft

Please tell me you use either curl or wget

@ret2bed I’m a heavy curl user, wget less so. Perhaps I need to start using lynx again
@jerry love the Firefox, hate the Mozilla. Same as before.
Kartik Agaram (@[email protected])

Firefox will die one day. Then Chrome will "dance down amongst us again, clad in his true shape at last, singing his incomprehensible rhymes as the trees mutter their curses and the black and terrible Barrow-Wights dance and gibber around him." (https://km-515.livejournal.com/1042.html)

@jerry As exploitative and just all around ick as AI is, they have a really good point that if the power of AI isn't made open-source and given to the people, it's going to be dominated by huge corporations who set the rules for themselves.

Is that going to happen anyway? ... Maybe. But open-source and accessible AI is a must if proprietary corpo AI is an inevitability.
@jerry We need open source "AI".
@jerry I think mozilla management is firefoxs worst enemy at this point.
@jerry still loving it because it's note chrome :)

@jerry

Enshittifaction proceeds apace, but where is there to jump to apart from Firefox? I feel like the last polar bear on the last ice floe.

@jerry Can’t we just hate all corporations because we recognize that they are inherently bad for society?
