On a level that is my thinking. I think many of our friends in the press have a serious #Twitter / #X habit that they are unwilling to break.

Many #journalists have extensive followings who will amplify their message. That in many cases is money in the pocket. It’s difficult to step away from that.

My approach is to cajole journalists into participating on #Mastodon. The audience might be way smaller, but the quality of engagement is vastly superior

@mnutty It's beyond stupid as brand recognition/loyalty was pretty much the only thing social media companies have of any real value. Cloning the product is easy - caputring the brand recognition that attracts and maintains a viable user base.... not so much.

Most #rebranding efforts I’ve encountered are an exercise in corporate officer egos. Enormous expense generators yielding customer confusion and questionable benefits.

I’d suggest rebranding frequently makes sense following a corporate merger, not the case with #Twitter and of course there is the thing that most corporate #mergers are another exercise in hubris which usually fail. LOL

Fascinating to watch a supposed businessman destroy his investment. But heck, what is the loss of a few billion?

Before the #Twitter acquisition, #ElonMusk was the golden boy of the tech world. His LBO acquistion financing was built on the success of both #Tesla and #SpaceX. Banks and #oligarchs lined up to finance the takeover. Now I think #Musk would be hardpressed to tap those deep pockets again

I don’t see a way forward for the company, only bankruptcy at this point. The brand has been severely damaged in the name of #ElonMusk’s “free speech”. Should the company end up filing for reorganization, than there may be alternative opportunities. How long all this plays out, remains to be seen.

Increasingly, I find myself questioning the morality of even lurking on the platform, something that I’m admitting. I’ve opted to only post on Twitter when encouraging others to migrate

My take is that he’s a #centrist as am I although I imagine we arrived at that place from very different places.

I’m an #atheist, social liberal, supporter of robust social safety nets while also being a fiscal realist

French is an #Evangelical who opposed #LGBTQ legal rights but has since changed his stance. His recent writings have focused on his abhorrence if #Trumpism

So do I agree with him and all things? - no , but I do on some

@mnutty Believe me, i am very aware who David French is -- I've been aware of him since his shitty Iraq War days -- and he is in fact a rightwing ideologue even if he finds it convenient to appear more centrist.

(Also, the details of French's specific positions aside, the Overton Window in the USA is so far rightwards these days that NO ONE who votes Republican has any claim to the term "centrist". The Democrats are a center-right party!)

I think #Zuckerberg does give a damn, might explain the apparent rush to bring #Threads to market long before it’s basic-feature complete. I think he would have been better served by waiting, but it could be that #ElonMusk was getting up his nose and he wanted to hit back

The decision to launch by first preloading with corporate brands and plastic personality influencers gave the site an instant artificial, astroturfing vibe. Threads is Diet Twitter, full of chemicals and artificial sweeteners.
