Blue check chaos: Twitter policy spurs confusion and scramble to prove authenticity

Twitter’s move to remove thousands of legacy verification check marks Thursday resulted in chaos as users were left scrambling to prove their authenticity in the face of fake impersonation accounts emerging. Elon Musk plans to change the logo of Twitter to an “X” from the famous blue bird, marking what would be the latest big change since he bought the social media platform for $44 billion last year. In a series of posts on his Twitter account starting just after 12 a.m. ET on Sunday, Twitter’s owner said that he’s looking to make the change worldwide as soon as Monday. Why Did Elon Musk Rebrand Twitter X, and What's an Everything App?

Long before Elon Musk’s $44 billion purchase of Twitter Inc. last year, he would talk about building an all-encompassing service called “X.” In typical Musk fashion, the concept was expansive and amorphous. Then over a weekend in July, he kickstarted that venture by abruptly changing the name and logo of the influential social media platform. 48) Looks like a new record broken by #ElonMusk.

Apparently #X the #SocialMedia network formerly known has #Twitter has lost more major million dollar advertisers in one day, than any other social media company

Congrats #Elon. I’m relying on you to improve on that performance. I’m sure you can be even more bigoted with a little practice.

Maybe tune into #DonaldTrump rally to get a few pointers?

49) Glad to see Ann Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, calling it quits on #Twitter

Is your elected representative still playing in the sewers of #X? Maybe they should be encouraged to do otherwise?

Time to start encouraging your representative to leave the nightmare that #ElonMusk has constructed behind. Maybe they should be encouraged to join #Mastodon where real engagement happens?

‘Vast worldwide sewer’: Paris mayor quits X with swipe at Elon Musk

‘This platform and its owner act deliberately to exacerbate tensions and conflicts,’ Anne Hidalgo says.

50) With the latest #ElonMusk public tantrum, #Twitter moves closer to bankruptcy.

When the company was taken private in Oct last year it was larded up with $13 billion of debt. Servicing that debt in addition to ongoing operations is increasingly questionable without an additional cash infusion

Will #Musk ante up by liquidating some of his Tesla/SpaceX holdings? I’m highly sceptical of the likelihood that existing investors will wish to throw good money after bad

https://theguardian.com/technology/2023/nov/30/can-elon-musk-stop-x-going-to-the-wall-after-tirade-at-advertisers

Can Elon Musk stop X going to the wall after tirade at advertisers?

Ad revenue used to service debt unlikely to return soon, meaning deal with lenders or cash injection may be needed

The Guardian
@mnutty I'm concerned that our gov is working with the obviously unstable, "self medicated", detached, life is a video game #Musk. What is the risk to the public?

@thinking_images

Multiple concerns. From a national security point of view, there is too much dependence on his low orbital satellite network. That’s an issue #Ukraine has had to deal with.

@mnutty Exactly. #Musk inserts himself and his (questionable) opinions/insights into everything, and he believes that he is the only trustworthy news source. His erratic behavior is not worth the risk.

@thinking_images

He strikes me as a desperately damaged man deeply in need of adulation, something he has in common with the last president

50) Interesting effort from the wonderful folks at @indivisibleteam - see the link below

As denizens of #Mastodon, a question we have to ask of ourselves is to what degree we should persuade friends colleagues and those we admire to leave the blighted #Twitter platform? Is there a moral obligation?

Collective action to address X's hateful, dangerous direction and help strengthen better, more functional alternatives.

51) Another day, another step downward towards complete irrelevance.

At the behest of #ElonMusk, #X has reinstated #AlexJones

While #Musk claims to champion #FreeSpeech, he clearly has little interest in truthful speech. The US courts have found Jones guilty of the most mean spirited fabulation, but I guess truth and honesty are of little relevance in the mind of the world’s richest man

52) The Verge is out with a big series on #Twitter. While I don’t thing Twitter died in 2023, I think that’s a plausible outcome in the upcoming year.

Clearly Twitter is going to have increased difficulties servicing its $13 billion debt and I highly doubt that #ElonMusk will find outside investors willing to ante up good money after bad to keep the outfit afloat. The only question left is whether #Musk is willing to liquidate some of his portfolio to prop things up

https://www.theverge.com/c/23972308/twitter-x-death-tweets-history-elon-musk

The year Twitter died: a special series from The Verge

Twitter was many things: a news accelerator, a harassment engine, and an infinite joke machine. It will be missed.

The Verge
@mnutty
Elon's goal is to twart the election. Adding the Nazis is proof. He'll sacrafice his portfolio for that..no problem.
@mnutty @dangillmor No longer the world's richest man, in fact. Musk has lost a fortune, thanks to Twitter/"X", & his other businesses.

@rmblaber1956 @dangillmor

I try to avoid spending to much time tracking the vacillations of obscene #garch wealth

Certainly #Twitter has become a significant sinkhole for #ElonMusk and will likely go bankrupt in the not too distant future. That is unless #Musk decides to incinerate more of his fortune through wealth implosion management techniques deployed at #X

@mnutty
It's like he tags their ads with swastika labeled shit pile emojis and then wonders why they don't want to continue that way. And they have to pay him for that feature.

@Silversalty

LOL. He seems bent on destroying what little commercial viability #Twitter had left

@mnutty Still, he blew up his rocket like an expert. :-)

@Historyan2

LOL interesting to see the spin this evening on how how this was somewhat of a success

@mnutty 🙃 Elon is as formidable a "businessman" as Putin is a smart "field commander".
@mnutty
They can always count on the pillow guy.

@72mz

If that’s the backstop they’re in deep doodoo

@mnutty @DemocracyMattersALot Viva Elon, nadie hizo nunca tanto por el #fediverse.
@mnutty he feels untouchable, and perhaps, thanks to his money....he is 😔
@mnutty it's quite incredible how much damage he has done in such a short time. It's almost as if he's not quite as clever as his admirers make him out to be!

@ccferrie

Some have theorized that the #Twitter acquisition was driven by the desire to hijack the platform to flood the #SocialMedia ecosystem with #Disinformation

Why do that?

Some #Technogarchs like #ElonMusk would like to dispense with nation interference disrupting their fantastical projects

Best way to do that is, create #FUD, disrupt the political system, destabilize fiat currencies, get #DonaldTrump back in the White House etc

Total #ChaosMonkey stuff

@mnutty @ccferrie they are only disinforming each other. The sensible ones have all left. I hope.

@thirdwhaletrip @ccferrie

A lot of #journalists still squatting there in the ruins of the place. Dreck can be filtered out using lists.

Whether we like it or not, #Twitter is still a place people go to for #BreakingNews. That notion is being called into question with the widely reported flood of #Gaza war #disinformation

In my view #X is now a dangerous destabilizing sewer. Continued support of the #SocialMedia platform is highly questionable

@mnutty I think that's giving him more credit than he's due, tbf.

"Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence"

@ccferrie hopefully you’re right

That is the mystery about #Elonmusk, is he an accidental billionaire who blundered into his wealth through a series of lucky efforts or is he a malign genius?

Hopefully the former, I’m wary of the latter

@mnutty The funny thing is that many media organisations slagging X still have active accounts there!

You can't be part of the problem and complain about the problem.

@Steveb

Yeah, I agree that is not logically sustainable

@mnutty I’m there purely for fesshole.

@mnutty I no longer post anything on Twitter, but I do pop back occasionally as there's a lot of people on it who don't post here.

Honestly, I haven't noticed any change at all in my feed since the rebrand when I left. I think that's mainly because I already had my feed pretty well dialled in and I'd already blocked Musk, JP, everyone in GB News and all the other sources of crap, and marked every post about the royal family as "not interested".

If you curate your X feed, it is perfectly fine.

@MatryoshkaLimit

I noticed last time I was on that I was getting some pretty right wing stuff shoved into my feed specifically in the alerts section.

In my case I used lists to narrow down what I was really interested in. Likely because I follow the political world, the algorithm was serving up some nasty stuff.

Frankly life is short, there are far better things to do

@mnutty I found some stuff got through because of transitive follows - if an account you follow follows someone, those posts can get promoted in your For You feed, you can (or could) see this when you click the post - I unfollowed those accounts and that seems to fix it. But mainly it's a reflexive, it only takes a few clicks to block someone if a bad post pops up.

Most of this stuff is via a small number of high profile accounts that amplify and retweet.

Block first ask questions later IMO

@mnutty @dangillmor Regarding the journalists who remain on Twitter: I don't think they would leave even if Musk shot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue. They have made their peace with Musk and with Twitter's hospitality toward white supremacists, and they will stick with it no matter what.

@Leisureguy

I’ll push back against that. I think for many in that hectic profession, they have not stopped to think deeply about it in a swirling life of deadlines.

Even in a quiet moment I can imagine the sense of dread in abandoning a following built over years

For some, I think they don’t want to cede the ground, that somehow they can resist and thereby preserve their social capital. I think they are mistaken in this. If anything I can see a future where #Twitter is bankrupt

@mnutty So what do you think would make them leave? Will they stick to Twitter until it goes bankrupt and ceases operation? Or can you think of something that would be sufficiently bad that they would leave? What would that be?

@Leisureguy

I think banning more journalists for criticizing #ElonMusk or one of his sacred cows might trigger more departures. The ensuing outrage would have an impact for some

This is a process, I think a slow slide into irrelevancy rather than a sudden catastrophic event

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton acquitted in impeachment trial

Paxton was impeached for allegedly taking bribes, but ultimately members of his party chose not to vote for his conviction and removal from office.

NBC News

@Leisureguy

A deeply unserious political party with no devotion to the rule of law

@mnutty I Was just watching the BBC News. They had one of those little segments that they run randomly throughout the day, bit like a little advert for themselves.

The one they just ran includes #elonmusk saying "It's important to listen to people you don't like and it's important to hear to things you don't like". Or words to that effect.

How I laughed.

@Steveb

Indeed. I might add it’s important to listen to types you don’t like so that you can know them for what they are and protect yourself from their worst depredations

@mnutty
How is this man so filthy rich? Oh yes, we live in a society that rewards rich people for being facile and unscrupulous! In that case, carry on, and I'm SO looking forward to reaping what this brave new world has sewn for us. /s

@mnutty

"It’s extraordinary to see how quickly #ElonMusk has destroyed one of #SocialMedia’s premium brands" - it's getting increasingly hard not to think that Musk is actively trying to destroy what was Twitter.
