Apollo has an opt-out sub refund screen out. Since I unfortunately know, first hand, all about this process I'll say this is all incredibly stressful. If you ever had a sub for Apollo, even if you uninstalled it and deleted Reddit, go check it out and at least consider it.

It's probably only a few $s for you but those $s get multiplied by 10s of thousands of subs and end up being real money straight out of Christian's pockets.

Macrumors commenter’s takes are always a take.
“Simple Maths” 2 million downloads, 100% conversion rate, 0 churn. Revenue of approximately $30M a year! Or $180M over the 6 years!!!

@paul “I’d like my money back.” is a defensible position, whether or not we agree.

But why so much anger? if you’re going to rage this much rage at Reddit for causing this shitstorm.

@Brandon @paul @paul i can't think of a business on earth that sits on a year's worth of revenue just in case they have to shut down and refund every one of their customers. It's not that asking for the money is indefensible. it's that acting like this shouldn't have any impact on the single person behind the business is unreasonable.
@paul macrumors forum posters are some of the worst people on the internet. The comments get really wild when it’s a post that’s been marked as “political”.
@paul Macrumours forums have some of the worst comments I’ve seen anywhere. This dude reads like an angry 15 year old, though, and not a sophisticated one.
@Charles @paul these are the kinds of people spez is courting, because he holds these same opinions
@paul it’s applefan69, feels 100% like a troll account.
@paul Applefan69 knows anti-everything about software business.
@paul
I couldn't tell from the screenshot, were those upvotes or downvotes?
@GertyBz As of this moment, 9 likes, 25 dislikes, 1 love. Take some solace in that majority disagree with his take, at least.

@Abazigal
Thankyoo very much. :) :)

[edit] Ps: Solace taken.

@Abazigal @GertyBz but that also there are 9 other children on that forum. I’ve actually, wrongly or rightly, always assumed that a large proportion of the people on Reddit are of school age because I can’t explain the childish banter, lack of compassion and inflammatory remarks any other way.

@sdjmchattie @Abazigal
If you were perceived as womanly, you'd've experienced enormous numbers of fully grown adult men, so poorly socialised they're quite incapable of initiating any conversation that'd realistically return any pleasant engagement.

So I think it's perfectly possible that the puerile humour attempts & wild zero-empathy ragefires could realistically include a goodly proportion of adult men.

I just think the adolescents probably make up a smaller proportion than you think.

@GertyBz @Abazigal this sounds like the voice of personal experience which I’m sorry to hear. I don’t really understand why anyone would want to instantly alienate other people before having a good reason to.

As I’ve recounted on several occasions, social media is not very sociable and usually generates more arguments and resentment than it does friendship and good discussion. The only exception at the moment seems to be Mastodon, but I’m sure it’ll get overrun eventually.

@sdjmchattie @Abazigal
I usually assume alienations like this result from lacking empathy for non-"me" demographics, & most don't purposely cut off vast revenue streams. I've seen this trait most often by far in cis het white male groups, but I'm sure it could also be in others.

I find with Mastodon that engaged like-minded speedy moderation is key to a pleasant experience. Many instances are overrun with trolls/spam, but thanks to the admins on my instance I almost never see any. :)
@Curator

@paul Points to my temporal lobes. “This makes my brain hurt, right here, it hurts right here”
@paul they are always the worst. I sometimes compulsively click the comments button and then immediately regret it
@paul This dude sounds like a redditor 😄
@paul oh wow. Of all the takes, that’s one of them. Awful.
@paul yikes. I was just reading the comments. Dude sounds like a spez alt account.
@paul Twitter comments or MacRumors comments, which are worse? ; )
@evanmc Trick question? Isn't YouTube the all time winner?
@paul It’s always the dummest comments that are written with the greatest confidence.
@paul This right here is why I have always steered clear of Reddit even though there were times when I wanted to join. I never did, fortunately.
@paul the most wannabe billionaire take in existence lmao
@paul prob the same who will claim dev is greedy when switching to subscription model to support a living.
@paul Seeiously FUCK that guy. 😡
@gedeonm @paul swiftly and without mercy. With a splintered cricket bat.
@paul Pretty sure they never bought or subscribed to Apollo, too.
@paul what a nice human being. must be a lovely parent / son / friend
@paul his wording is terrible, and it makes him look like an *ss, but I actually kinda agree.
@prullenbak @paul I was happy to ignore my subscription when Tweetbot was shutdown. I appreciated the work the developers did.
@Craktok @paul I didn’t use the last version of tweetbot because I already started to hate twitter. So I didn’t have to make that decision. But I happily bought earlier versions. I don’t mind paying for software and although I don’t like subscriptions, I do get it. However, the anonymous person is kind of right in saying: “you pay for a subscription for working software. If the software stops working, there’s no real reason to keep paying.”
@prullenbak no one is saying you should keep paying for software after it’s stopped working, but I firmly believe you pay for what you’ve used (which is what I did with Tweetbot). The anonymous person was being a dick (as anonymous people are want to do).
@Craktok don’t get me wrong: he absolutely was. But in principle, and more nuanced, I agreed with with him. And still do. But I like to stay on the non-dick side of the brutally honest / dick line 🙂
@paul imagine being so casually cruel in your outlook on life and approach to other people.
@paul this is a special kind of rage. Generally I only see it from folks who are deeply deeply angry about something else entirely.

@paul

From a commenter who has not written a line of code ever.

Still amazes me how many people don't understand that software creators need to eat too…

@paul What in the actual fuck lmao

@paul "I don't care that the money has already been spent on providing the service I paid for, I want it back!"

That's someone who doesn't understand how the infrastructure behind Apollo (or anything on the internet for that matter) works.

@paul There’s a take, there’s daylight, then there’s that guy. 😳
@paul I'm the first one pressing a 👎
@paul that has got to be the most fitting username ive ever seen

@paul our forums are just as bad. We have people sharing links to websites that seemingly make up people’s net worth saying “this guy is a millionaire.”

I hate humanity sometimes.

Thank you for your insights, *squints* “applefan69”

Edit: You can tell this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about because Apollo had the option to donate to Christian’s local SCPA. There was literally a “real” charity donation button right on the app itself.

@paul Just the worst people on the internet

@paul
Regardless, this comment is all kinds of wrong but also…

Does the developer have to refund 100% or just the 70%/85% they received after Apple’s take?
Does Apple refund their take to the user, the dev, or “nah, that’s our money now”?

@sirshannon @paul that’s a good question.
@paul I can’t believe applefan69 wasn’t more socially adjusted, that came out of nowhere
@paul this is why I tend to read the articles without ever venturing into the comments or forum posts
@paul found myself wishing ya’ll would’ve done the Tweetbot wallpapers thing that they did ;)
@paul The decline refund wouldn’t pop up for me. So I bought the wallpapers instead.
@paul How does one find this screen? Updated the latest version, got a popup about buying a wallpaper pack, but I'll be darned if I can find the refund opt-out.
@techphotoguy @paul force quit, of that doesn't do it make sure the app thinks you're subscribed (restore purchase or whatever it says). Mine didn't seem to remember my subscription for a minute there.
