I'm sorry everyone but we need to take back whatever we all said about Apple not doing machine learning right.

iOS 17's Photos app can now identify *and* explain laundry symbols in pictures and this is amazing. No more need for apps that do this; just swipe up on a photo.

alas I have already tumble-dried this shirt multiple times
@viticci The real innovation will be when it can confidently tell you which of those symbols you can ignore
@viticci And sadly, for that reason, no one ever heard from Federico again. Please folks, learn the laundry symbols.
@viticci this reminded me of Dumbledore and makes me so happy. Alas ear wax.
@viticci It’s important though, because I want to understand exactly how I’m mistreating my clothes.
@viticci This is amazing stuff! Would love it if the Camera app would detect it and let you check without taking a picture, kinda like what it does with QR codes.
@matt Yes. I can't wait for some kind of 'Live Look Up' in a future iPhone model (also seems pretty obvious as a feature for the Vision Pro, just saying)
@viticci Ha was about to say the same thing. "Hey Siri, what's the tag mean?" would be pretty nice.

@matt @viticci

β€œ30 minutes, counting down!”

@matt @viticci "future model of the iPhone" does that actually pinpoint what is wrong with the Apple model? Monolithic development, feature added to the Photos app that is updated via OS updated?

That it is sustainable at all (because Apple is HW & SW maker with a high margin) does not make it a good or effective development model.

@yacc143 @viticci It could also be a software update, sure.

@matt
Sure, but the point is, that it's a monolithic software update.

The rest of the world literally works to make smaller components that can updated independently.

So even severe embarrassing bugs need to be quelled around till there is a complete new release (think the current MacOS SATA disconnect bug)

And what's wrong with "share" "analyse image app" as a workflow, infinitely extensible without begging your OS manufacturer to add feature X to the photo app.
@viticci

@matt
Sidenote: the rotten fruit company is BTW also known for excluding older hardware from the cool new features of a new OS release.

Hence the fascinating n years OS Updates turn into way less fascination a years full updates and b years security updates. Sigh
@viticci

@yacc143 @viticci This rant is fine and all, but it is very funny that you’re making it in response to an example of them adding new features to existing and older hardware 😘
@viticci @matt I generally don’t like cluttering my photo library with this kinda stuff. Maybe they could add this to notes? Wish there was a way it automatically filtered it out so I could clear it from time to time, like the screenshots folder.
@viticci RIP Laundry Lens (and I'm sure many others), but the feature makes sense as being a system one. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/laundry-lens/id1513767864
β€ŽLaundry Lens

β€ŽLaundry Lens is the perfect companion for doing the laundry. Just point your camera at a care label and you will be presented to the proper instructions on how to take care of your clothes and garments. By swiping up, you can also look up the laundry symbols manually and discover many others. Laundr…

App Store
@libraryvines @viticci i'd rather not have 100 pictures of my clothing tags clogging up my camera roll, and i'm not on the beta, so i'm real glad you brought this app to my attention!
Apple's iOS 17 Will Decode Your Car's Dashboard Symbols and Warning Lights

The iPhone's Visual Look Up will soon be able to understand your car's pleas for help.

Gizmodo
@viticci do you think this should be more discoverable? I’m sorry but putting this crazy good feature alongside the metadata is nuts imo
@viticci Let’s have a moment of silence for those apps who are getting sherlocked in iOS 17 🀐
@viticci With this example I have a real doubt, what is the difference between artificial intelligence and machine learning? Could you explain a bit? Thank you.
@ottost @viticci Artificial intelligence is a) a marketing brand for machine learning, b) a science fiction trope, or c) an apocalyptic religion.
@viticci now I just need ML that can help me with my fashion choices
@viticci this is super cool, but especially so for the Accessibility angle. No doubt VoiceOver reads these descriptions for anyone doing laundry who happens to be visually impaired
@viticci These "boring" applications of AI are actually the best way to bring it to the masses! It's truly useful in new ways and requires minimal effort to figure out
@viticci This is pretty awesome, although my first attempt at Live Text Translate on this tag yielded the questionable suggestion β€œDON'T CLEAN YOURSELF.”
@dmoren @viticci What does it originally say in French?
@nileane @viticci Ne pas nettoyer Γ  sec, which my admittedly rusty French would translate as "Do not dry clean."
@dmoren @viticci Imagine using Live Text Translate on the Vision Pro.
@sru @viticci Bizarre translations as far as the eye can see!
@dmoren @sru @viticci the entire world in Engrish for your entertainment/befuddlement
@sru @dmoren @viticci That would be cool, though I feel like this technology has been "ready" for a decade now. I remember using this Translate app Google ended up acquiring and rolling into the Google app ages ago. Just point camera at something and it would show you live translation for any language.
@jbwharris @dmoren @viticci It would be great to do it hands-free though. Phone and tablet AR apps were hamstrung by requiring the user to hold out a device and only experience AR through a tiny field of view.
@dmoren @viticci NEW IOS DISCOURAGES PERSONAL HYGIENE - IS APPLE *DOOMED*?!
@viticci my wife’s holy grail is species of roses, but I doubt that’s coming any time soon.
@viticci probably a regional thing. Doesn't work here in Europe.
@viticci My favourite variation of these logos are the Australian ones β€” where in true Aussie fashion β€” just write it out.

@jamie_shaw @viticci

Those crazy people "down under."

They do such crazy things!!!

Like, they use *words*!!!! 😱

@viticci This is a really good sign they’ve done some deeper hooks to make every context β€œsmarter”. Exciting!
@viticci perfect now I can continue to ignore laundry symbols

@viticci THIS is the future I want to live in. Yeah, it's "a tiny thing." I want ALL my tiny nuisances to go away with technology!

Way better than another way to get me to sign up for something using dark patterns (Apple needs to work on this as well) or monitoring my every move because you are an app on my most trusted personal device (Apple has made some strides here).

@viticci sure it starts with that. Before you know it it starts directing you to buy puts.
@viticci Apple just made moms obsolete.
@viticci @tech45 Siri doet dan toch iets goed! (Geen Apple user dus kan niet fact-checken).
@viticci
Ok that is impressive, and useful!
@viticci We will look back on this day as the moment we realized we created something we cannot hope to keep control of.
@viticci This feature brought to you by the need to have this info for blind people. Yea for another #accessibility win!
@ppatel @viticci what do you mean by laundry symbols?
@benblatch @viticci It's the indicators on clothing that tell you how the particular piece of clothing should be washed and/or dried.
@viticci oh my god this is game-changing
@viticci this is cool
I hate Apple's approach to locking everything down but I can admit they make some cool shit (and that makes it all the more infuriating that they lock everything down)
@viticci this was the kind of thing I found charming when I got my first mac, small features that weren't marketing hypebombs but made the thing better when I was actually using it
@viticci How much clean data does one need to build a (washing) machine learning system to read laundry tags? . . . I'll just see myself out.
@viticci
If the instructions are to shrink and misshapen the clothing in question, then my family don't need no stinkin tags with instructions.
