“Hundreds of employees working on Blackbird were assigned to ‌Siri‌ X, which killed the ambitious project to make ‌Siri‌ more capable. ‌Siri‌ X was mostly completed in 2021 and now many of the voice assistant's functions are processed locally.”

Sorry for the spam but I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this report! A light weight Siri is exactly what you were talking about by things starting simple.

The engineers who bet on Siri X are at the root of Siri rot.

@gruber

“Blackbird competed with the work of two senior leaders on the ‌Siri‌ team who were responsible for helping ‌Siri‌ understand and respond to queries. These individuals pushed for their own project, codenamed "‌Siri‌ X," for the 10th anniversary of the virtual assistant. The project simply aimed to move ‌Siri‌'s processing on-device for privacy reasons, without the lightweight, modular functionality of Blackbird.”

They had the right strategy originally and they picked the wrong one!

@gruber

Here’s the interesting part John

In 2019, the ‌Siri‌ team explored a project to rewrite the virtual assistant from scratch, codenamed "Blackbird." The effort sought to create a lightweight version of ‌Siri‌ that would delegate the creation of functions to app developers and would run on iPhones instead of the cloud to improve performance and privacy. Demos of Blackbird apparently prompted excitement among Apple employees owing to its utility and responsiveness.

@gruber

“Former Apple employees who worked in the company's AI and machine learning groups believe that a lack of ambition and organizational dysfunction have hindered ‌Siri‌ and the company's AI technologies. Apple's virtual assistant is apparently "widely derided" inside the company for its lack of functionality and minimal improvement over time.”

@gruber Apple’s Siri rot goes very deep. Amazing article from the information on Siri Team’s disfunction.

Some quotes from a MacRumors article

“By 2018, the team working on ‌Siri‌ had apparently "devolved into a mess, driven by petty turf battles between senior leaders and heated arguments over the direction of the assistant."

Apple’s AI Chief Struggles With Turf Wars as New Era Begins

Late last year, a trio of engineers who had just helped Apple modernize its search technology began working on the type of technology underlying ChatGPT, the chatbot from OpenAI that has captivated the public since it launched last November. For Apple, there was only one problem: The engineers ...

The Information

@gruber

With all your talk on Siri I’m reminded years ago that someone did a deep dive on the corporate structure for the Siri team.

I’ll edit this post with the link if I find it but the thesis of the article was unlike the rest of Apple, the Siri team is filled with middle managers and tons of people who benefitted by having things remain the same.

I even remember that the Vision Pro Team tried to invent their own Sunk Works Siri bc they hated it for AVP but was eventually stopped.

Regardless of what happens in the keynote today with calculators, I wanted to say that I’ve been dealing with a serious family health crisis for the last three months, and I’ve spent a lot of that time around hospitals.

So, please don’t add to my stresses today by tagging me in a million things about getting Sherlocked because, genuinely, even if Apple destroys my entire business today, it’s not going to be my biggest concern.

Re your latest Article: I think Apple is a bit screwed here. Pretty much any amount they make free now is pointless

If they increased the free storage to 15GB people would still fill it up pretty much immediately. If Apple increased the free tier to 15GB they’d triple their costs without meaningfully solving the problem

The reality is that unless Apple offers 400GB of of iCloud Storage Free, people will always have to pay for more. So if people have to pay anyway, why not keep the 5GB

Even if you're an Apple stan and think the company really has no motivation but a sincere desire to protect users, and government regulators are bad product designers and this will make things worse… even so, this is Apple's fault. The handwriting has been on the wall for years. They should've figured out a way to *self*-regulate by now. Because the *appearance* of impropriety clearly exists, and has now been called out on multiple continents. This is not one regulator with a bias.
