Reminder—if Trump's indictment was meritless every top criminal defense lawyer in America would be scrambling to defend him. It’d be the case of a lifetime.

But instead they're avoiding him like the plague b/c they know he's guilty & refuse to sink with his ship.

US law holds "when accused of a crime an attorney will be provided if you cannot afford one."

Trump may force a change to, "an attorney will be provided if you cannot afford one OR if you are so unethical no one will take your case."

@QasimRashid My gut says that lawyers are happy to work cases with potentially guilty clients as long as they’re paid.

Trump has a certain reputation re: how he pays his lawyers: https://www.salon.com/2021/02/02/trumps-lawyers-quit-after-he-refused-to-pay-3m-in-legal-fees-despite-raising-170m-report/

Trump’s lawyers quit after he refused to pay $3M in legal fees despite raising $170M: report

@metaphase @QasimRashid also, everybody is entitled to a decent defence. That too is an important aspect of the rule of law.

Yes, even the terrible ones.

@A_denie @metaphase @QasimRashid in which case, i hope that he receives the same "decent" defense than the poorest regular defendants receive. Not out of spite (well, not entirely), but to showcase how many defendants never get their chance at a decent defense.
@QasimRashid Plus he has a reputation of not paying people.
@QasimRashid Does the law require representation for a client no attorney can afford?

@QasimRashid

Appointed Atty or he can self represent, 😂 😂 😂

@QasimRashid It's not just that—he also doesn't listen to legal advice, and doesn't have a great reputation for paying his bills…
@QasimRashid No educated European believes that the indictments are meritless.
@QasimRashid Be a lot of lawyers taking holidays in some remote place?

@QasimRashid

No no. You see, he's innocent. It's just a gigantic conspiracy theory by the libruls to get him.

/s in case anyone needs it

@QasimRashid @kbsez or simply: he *can't* afford one, because there's no amount of money he could offer that would induce one to take the case.
@QasimRashid they could just leave it so that he’s not appointed one either. I mean, he CAN afford one.
@QasimRashid and if you take on the Trump Crime Syndicate as a client good luck getting him to pay if you fail to defend him. He'll probably immediately sue you for not keeping him out of jail.
@QasimRashid ngl, even hating the carceral system and how terrible the justice system is set up, there is something delightful in the schadenfreude of Trump being represented by a public defender with dozens of cases

@QasimRashid
Anyone willing to do the work after getting a retainer, should make that retainer large enough to cover significant work for a period of years. And the work will be on the boat rail of the law, with significant risk to a license.

I'm thinking a retainer in the 100 million $$ area.

@QasimRashid who wants to be a lawyer that loses a big case, doesn’t get paid, will inevitably be asked to do something unethical or illegal, and alienates other clients? No one, except a bad lawyer who is truly desperate.
@MattFerrel @QasimRashid So, time to roll over Giuliani's naked but kept his shorts on ass, and tee him up?
@ShrikeTron @QasimRashid I think even Trump knows Rudy G is incompetent
@QasimRashid What happened to his faithful lawyer Trusty? A name fit for the Simpsons AND Breaking Bad.
@QasimRashid
I wonder if Dershowitz is still interested in supporting Trump. He helped him in an impeachment.
@skydog @QasimRashid He seems to be trying to straddle the middle. On one hand Dershowitz claims that trump was unfairly targeted, but on the other he says that the evidence is damning.
Doubt he will run to trump's legal defense.
@QasimRashid Don’t forget, he also throws every one of his minions to the wolves, ruins their careers, and moves on, calling them “loser”.

@QasimRashid There are plenty of reasons not to take #Trump as a client. Just a few:
1) Demonstrated history of being an unmanageable client that sabotages his own case by disregarding legal advice;

2) Extensive history of not paying those who work for him, including attorneys;

3) Tendency for his attorneys to end up disbarred or in prison (even mob boss attorneys have a much better track record on this one) ;

vs. Reasons to take him as a client:
1) You're an idiot

2) The court forces you.

@QasimRashid unfortunately my family knows the lawyer who actually is defending him. We feel very weird about it. No connection to him anymore but he literally worked with one of our family members last year….

@QasimRashid

Respectfully, the 6th amendment doesn't reserve the right to legal counsel for those who are indigent. It is meant to ensure that government prosecutors do their job.

The bar for criminal conviction (guilty beyond a reasonable doubt) is very high for a reason.

Even if there were pro Bono attorneys beating down his door, the right to counsel is meant to secure effective counsel by a competent counselor.

Let's not make the mistake of demonizing defense attorneys.

@QasimRashid

Criminal defense attorneys, especially public defenders, are ethically bound to provide a zealous defense and their job is to force the state to prove legal guilt if the state wishes to secure a conviction.

I wish for DJT to receive qualified and competent counsel AND for the state to secure meritorious conviction on the basis of a watertight case built from a mountain of irrefutable and compelling evidence.

@QasimRashid why isn’t Guilianni defending him. Or the Kraken!!??
@QasimRashid He's betrayed and turned on so many of his own, now he's fishing for legal scraps. It doesn't look good for him at all.
@QasimRashid I just hope he isn't assigned a (reimbursable) Public Defender that somehow gets him off or gets him a great plea deal. Public Defenders really are the best crim defense attorneys.
@QasimRashid They may want immunity for any crimes that he pulls them into. And payment in advance.

@QasimRashid maybe he'll represent himself – now that would be entertaining.

There's that old saying that "those who represent themselves have an idiot for a client," so we know he's half way there already.

@QasimRashid This is a thing that exists

The 5th Amendment of course is the broadest example of this concept

Section 1915(d) of Title 28 of the United States Code allows federal judges to appoint a lawyer for people who otherwise cannot employ a lawyer.

The Criminal Justice Act allows judges to appoint a lawyer to indigent clients

Many states have similar laws many of which allow courts to compel bar members to represent a client.

There is also a famous supreme court case I cant remember.

@QasimRashid
Quite a wonderful exemplar of unintended consequence.
@QasimRashid
probably multiple reasons they are avoiding him but his guilt not the primary one. Guilty people deserve a lawyer to make sure they are treated fairly. Lawyers take such cases all the time. They avoid him because he is a nightmare client. lies to lawyers, lies to judges, bullies lawyers, insists they say stupid things, make fools of them, probably hurts their careers. And fails to pay. He is his own worst enemy with people he has not seduced into his cult.
@QasimRashid It’s virtually never the guilt/innocence of the potential client. It’s the $$$$$$. Trump’s willingness to stiff previous attorneys is why he is in this mess. There are former Alex Jones attorneys who would love this case.

@QasimRashid

But instead they're avoiding him like the plague b/c they know he's guilty & refuse to sink with his ship.That and the whole "history of non-payment" thing. I mean, yeah, you could take the case with the idea that it's not going to directly make you any money on the hope that the increased visibility it gives your firm (and ability to charge others based on that increased visibility), but that's mostly a worthwhile business strategy only if the case is successful and/or you attract more clients than you potentially alienate.

@QasimRashid Kid named presumption of innocence:
@QasimRashid great point. Also, McCarthy foolishly said bathroom where docs were stored was with a lock!! If that’s how he thinks of security then why not let everyone working for these agencies take the papers to their home where there is a lock in the bathroom!! There is no end to how stupid these people will become to defend TDump.
@QasimRashid I thought no lawyer wanted to take Trump on as a client for 3 reasons:
*He won’t tell them the truth (or at least a consistent lie);
*He won’t do what they tell him to do;
And most important of all—
*He doesn’t pay his bills
Which is why his lawyers are all inexperienced, naive, & end up needing lawyers themselves
